Sony locks down PSN, SOE accounts after security compromised

Sony locks down 93,000 PSN, SOE, and SEN user accounts after detecting a large number of unauthorized attempts to gain access.

In April this year, Sony's PlayStation Network was subject to a widespread security breach, which led to a month-long network outage and the exposure of some 77 million PSN accounts and an additional 24.6 million Sony Online Entertainment accounts.

Although Sony managed to restore all affected PSN services by June, it looks like the publisher may once again be the subject of yet another attack.

In a statement to media today, and as reported byCNET, Sony revealed that it has locked down 93,000 user accounts on its PlayStation Network, Sony Entertainment Network, and Sony Online Entertainment network after detecting a large number of unauthorized attempts to gain access to the accounts.

According to Sony, intruders "using very large sets of sign-in IDs and passwords" had brief access to 60,000 accounts on the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network and another 33,000 accounts on the Sony Online Entertainment network.

In a post on the official PlayStation blog, Sony chief information security officer Philip Reitinger said that the attacks have affected less than one-tenth of 1 percent of customers.

"As a preventative measure, we are requiring secure password resets for those PSN/SEN accounts that had both a sign-in ID and password match through this attempt," Reitinger said in the post. "If you are in the small group of PSN/SEN users who may have been affected, you will receive an email from us at the address associated with your account that will prompt you to reset your password."

According to Reitinger, hackers succeeded in verifying sign-in IDs and passwords, but credit card information was not breached. Sony locked the accounts after confirming that the attempts were unauthorized and is sending emails to affected consumers who have locked accounts.

@Agent2800 I find that just as despicable, if you are thinking otherwise.

Agent2800 5 pts

@Gelugon_baat: yeah just like sony fanboys would bring up PSN in an Xbox live thread? trust me you wouldn't be commenting or complaining then would you

You get for what you pay I guess. In this case, a free server but with bad security.

Gelugon_baat 479 pts

Some of you just have to bring in Xbox Live into this comment thread. It's not even relevant to the matter here. Console wars - tiresome.

Somehow I feel this won't be the last we'll see of the Sony hackers. They'll do anything to make the PSN not free.

I don't play online, only sometimes but this never even affected me. Don't have any personal info on the account, no credit card info, nothing and if I need to buy something I just use PSN network card. People do the same thing and you won't have anything to worry about.

I'm not getting online, so...

Maybe they need to do away with DLC and credit card information on consoles. That seems to be the only successful way.

MCenturion 5 pts

Sony's being attacked again? Am I supposed to be surprised?

hunter8man 30 pts

How dumb can you be to use old passwords from the last hacking attempt and not think people weren't going to change their passwords considering that Sony pretty much made it mandatory that they did? It's a non-issue.

@willkorn I'm a civil kinda guy, no worries ;)

@paxis85 I am impressed. I didn't know there still were nice people on Gamespot. And about Sony and Hackers? I don't care anymore. I just went on and on to piss people off because they pissed me off with their arguments. But now with your comment, I have nothing left to say. Sometimes, couple of few good words are enough to finish it all. Haha! Good day, sir!

My god, this is just boring now. Really, just stop it.

I think it's One of Sonys staff.. They need to fire everybody and hire ALL new technicians.. ASAP...

gameking5000 12 pts

@servb0ts War? How is this war? It's just some no life hackers trying to hack PSN, SOE accounts and failing hard at it.

paxis85 20 pts

@Vampiro_HuntT3R Actually I agree with most if not all of the points that you mentioned. I wasn't trying to be aggressive in any way. I was just dropping my ten cents on what you were saying but answering generally. I agree that on some level, the punches Sony have taken are slowly sobering them into a better understanding of their position and as a ps3 owner that's actually something I'm glad about. At any rate, sorry if I came across as aggressive.

Jebril 23 pts

The things I would write here if I could would make a bunch of Sonyfanboys mad. So I'll just leave it at this: "Ha. Ha."

The War between Sony vs Hackers, Doesn't matter who starts it, once War starts, Both Side are Evil.

DullBozer 5 pts

Sony ain't good at this, there's obviously a weakness in their system, i don't care how good hackers are today, doesn't mater whether its a dating site, online banking or gaming network. When your holding people's private information in YOUR hands you better be responsible and not cut corners on online security.

mrsniper83 16 pts

Do they think that just making another password will help. How could they let this happen after what happened in April

JBStone 5 pts

I'm so fed up with this juvenile crap. These hackers are trying to portray themselves as good guys by punishing Sony for wrongs done against certain individuals, but all they're really doing is screwing over a bunch of innocent gamers, and at the end of the day, the hackers make life harder for regular people than Sony ever did, so who's the bad guy now? {} These immature jackoffs get so caught up in their own misguided self-righteousness they forget who really suffers in all this. Oh, sure, they're not taking our credit card information, but in the meantime they're locking out our accounts and for a whole month made it impossible for any of us to game online. How noble of them. {} It's a shame that people with such brilliant minds who can pick apart Sony's sophisticated security also happen to be so stupid otherwise, such intellectually bankrupt buffoons that they're technological know-how is more akin to severe autism than actual intelligence. Meanwhile, I'm so bad at this I don't even know how to create line breaks in this post without using these stupid brackets. {} Just cut it out already. Stop trying to ruin it for everyone else just because you're pissed off at Sony for being a successful company. Nobody cares about this nonsense but you, and even if we did we wouldn't want your crusade getting in the way of our gaming. Stop it.

Hey this has become a real "hot topic" ah so let's get this straight all im gonna say if this keeps like that i'd prefer to pay a fee before having all this trouble maybe isn't Sony fault but they have to improve i mean it's SONY and i don't now about you guys but at least for me i expect better things from it. May because i consider it like the best, bigger, and more Bad-ass of all.

ggregd 30 pts

HEY! MORONS!!! They didn't get hacked again! They saw someone trying to use the old stolen passwords from the real hack, and they locked down. This is some script kiddie going through the account data trying to get logged in as the dumbasses who didn't change their password. This shows they have monitoring in place and they're doing what they should have been doing all along.

gam3r2011 17 pts

why the f*ck are Sony fanboys saying that Xbox Live is more vulnerable than PSN while their online service is getting hacked all the time and Xbox Live is all good?

SiLenTWarrior29 12 pts

@D27x yeaah... Maybe.. Maybe your right... Yeeaaah... What was I thinking (slaps face) silly me hacker nuts feels good on my chin... Mmmmmm.. -_- wow

D27x 5 pts

Maybe the hacker aren't the bad guys .......................maybe they are just trying to show us that Sony doesn't give a sh*t for our privacy. (I didn't want to hurt any feelings sorry if i did)

o my god let the ps3 go. stop haking it. This is killing me. So much strese and i dont want any thing to hapen to my acont

Alot of people on this site are complaining about Xbox live accounts being hacked. I wonder if this will lead an out break similar to RROD in 2007. As for Sony I considered buying a PS console but now Im glade I hesitated.
