Sony pushes Only On PSN games
PS3-exclusive promotion features Infamous 2: Festival of Blood, PixelJunk Sidescroller; PS2 games also making downloadable debut with God Hand, Odin Sphere, more.
In July, Sony announced that it had invested $20 million into its Pub Fund as part of a three-year deal aimed at bulking up the PlayStation Network game lineup. Now, the Japanese game giant is rolling out a new "Only On PSN" program, highlighting some of the fruits of that investment.
The Only On PSN promotion will see new games exclusive to the PlayStation Network every week in October. Sony lists the program as launching tomorrow with the release of Rochard and Eufloria. However, Rochard actually debuted on the PlayStation Store last week.
Sony did not announce prices for any games in the series, but it did note that PlayStation Plus subscribers will enjoy a 20 percent discount on all wares during their first week on sale. Further, Sony noted that those who spend $60 or more from their PSN/Sony Entertainment Network wallet in October will be awarded $10 in November.
In addition to the PSN originals, the Only On PSN program will see the debut of downloadable PlayStation 2 games on the PlayStation 3. The first five games included in the program will be Clover Studio's brawler God Hand, VanillaWare's action strategy GrimGrimoire and action role-playing game Odin Sphere, Konami's tactics game Ring of Red, and Capcom's 3D Ghosts 'n Goblins spin-off Maximo: Ghosts to Glory. Sony did not detail prices for the Only On PSN originals or the PS2 rereleases.
The complete October release schedule is as follows:

Eufloria
Rochard (released September 27)
God Hand
GrimGrimoire
Maximo: Ghosts to Glory
Odin Sphere
Ring of Red
October 11
Sideway: New York

PixelJunk Sidescroller
First, Sony promises that the PlayStation 3 will be backwards compatible with the entire PlayStation (One and 2) library. They proceed to make fun of Microsoft for not providing XBOX compatibility with the XBOX 360. Then in an attempt to reduce production costs, they remove the hardware compatibility and replace it with something implemented in software. It works with far fewer titles than the hardware version, and is eventually removed entirely. Current PS3s have no compatibility with PS2 or PS1 games. Now Sony is telling is that we can play our PS2 games on our PS3s . We can even play our PSOne games on our PS3s and PSPs if we're willing to do the same. Nice try, Sony, but I ain't falling for the okey-doke.

Those ps2(from american ps store)games are compatible with pal ps3 version or only with ntsc?(Sorry for my english)
Greedy Sony. They'll let you buy Odin Shere from the Playstation Store but they won't update all PS3's with backward compatibility for the retail version. I own Odin Sphere and God Hand and yes, I'd like to play them on my PS3, but I'm not buying them from the PSS when I already own them and nothing new has been added.
@Scorchstar all the Spyro games are on the US store.
CakeBreak, your crazy if you think that XBL somehow gives more to you than PSN, and cry more about them putting games you dont want up for sale, believe it or not some peokple dont want ps2s hooked up, or dont have access to tons of cheap ps2 games like you do, also why pay likely the same price if i can buy it on the ps3 and never have to put a disc in?
I guess I'll be handing out more money this october.
@ Spacerac I'll admit, the possibility of these games working on PSP or Vita would be great, if you already own or plan to buy one of those systems.
Very nice and very smart getting the PS2 games on the store by the time the Vita is out there should be a nice bunch of classic games to add to it's launch list (if ofc Sony hasn't been really dumb and not made them vita compatible)

Odin Sphere!
Smart move for Sony.
Odin Sphere? that sounds great! I own the PS2 game and it's fantastic, but framerate really chops down in boss fights. I hope the power of the PS3 is enough to stop this from happening.
@CakeBreak Hhhmmm, I hear what you're saying but I think most of it is invalid. How can you say "Crazy Old Games" for PSN is bad. If you really want to buy the games for your PSOne or PS2 then by all means go ahead, but did you ever stop to think that this is for the people who never owned said console or just missed the games, like myself!?! Cross-Game chat is just not necessary in my eyes and since Sony clearly said they aren't going to do it, I think people should just forget about. What tasks on PSN exactly are a pain to do. I have never had a hard time navigating my way through it, but maybe that's just because I'm reasonably computer literate, who knows? Social network feature I will admit are lacking but again, for me it's not important. I once activated the feature where all my trophies show up on Facebook and all my friends got annoyed by it. I never see any problem with putting out classics on PSN for either, people who missed them or people who didn't own the console! By the way Odin Sphere here I come!
@cakebreak. Glad to see that you realize that your opinion is just that, your opinion. To answer your question I would pay to play a game like Odin sphere that I missed and didn't play, even though I have had a ps2 since 2001. If your looking at xbl with longing eyes and like what you see, then maybe it's time to get an xbox. And why is it that when nintendo or Microsoft release old games on their device no one ever complains so much? Bottom line either deal with what you have or switch to another system. Like you have mentioned though thats just my opinion.
Okami , GG X2 or accent core, Grandia 2 or 3, FFX or XX and , oh I forgot Shadow of the colossus is already remastered , hell yeah)
Sony..blah blah blah.. $20 million... blah blah blah... Crazy old games for PSN..blah blah blah... = PSN fails. And that is coming from a PS3 owner who never puts down his controller. PS3 has great games but im sorry to say that i thing PSN is a load of rubbish. If i wanted old games id buy the for my ps2 and psone. I hate to admit it but xbl crushes our "network". Not cross chat(they say its impossible). Almost every task that PSN is meant to do is a pain in the back side to get done. I see xbl users chatting, video chatting, talking and doing all kind of social network stuff. Sorry for another rant but you have to admit they ask for it sometimes. I know im getting what i paid for but to see others get more than they pay for is a bit depressing. Alot of people will be upset about what i have said i know but thats how i feel about what Sony does or should i say doesnt do for us. Who gave 400 pounds to play PSone and PS2 games? Realy be honest. This is just how i feel. i respect everyons opinions.
GrimGrimoire was one of the few strategy games I've ever played and Odin Sphere is simply one of the most beautiful games of the PS2, Vanillaware is giving a strong start to the Only on PSN program, hope the service keeps going this well
Awesome. I hope this applies to the Australian PSN store as well; we're pretty much getting shafted in terms of PS1 games, I hope it's not the case with the rest. We don't even have Spyro, for ****'s sake.
I have spent 39$ so far..guess I will buy RE4 , despite playing it on all the other consoles :P
thanks to "used game pirates" we all have to pay for online passes :D
I hope Festival of Blood's price will not expensive than Undead Nightmare.
@zzamaro said, "One of the reasons to remove from newer models was to reduce cost production, therefore, cheaper models." That would make sense, except that they admitted that it was so they could sell more PS3 games. Right here on Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6181373/sony-no-bc-more-ps3-game-sales "Exec concedes that missing feature doesn't lower production costs much, explains that being able to play old games discouraged buying new ones"
GOD HANNNNNNND!!! nothing else matters
Maximo Great, hope to maximo vs the army of zin soon
I'd like REZ and Gitaroo Man to make this list.
If I had to choose I would buy God Hand and Odin Sphere without thinking twice, they're amazing games. Specially God Hand.
Just put a decent price on the PS2 games, trophy support and then you can rob me. :)
@solidsnakedude1 Spyro isn't on the PSN Store.
Maximo sweet!
God Hand!! Score! :D
CRYSIS $20 RENEGADE OPS $15 NBA JAM ON FIRE EDITION $15 RESIDENT EVIL 4 HD $20 thats more that 60$ alright .free dollars here i come :P
Long Live Play FTW
I would consider some of them if they were not download only.
all i want is final fantasy 10 and 12. ohh and kingdom hearts 1 and 2=) ohh yeahhhhh....
Whoever chose that PS2 lineup for PSN has pretty good taste.
Trophy support?
Odin Sphere?! I want!
FFX and i may consider updating from fw 3.55
Finally! PS2 games on PS3. I will now have a better reason to visit the PSstore. I have been waiting for them to add PS2 games to the library since. It will be nice to play some of these games again, though I am guessing a number of them will be 20 or more. I suppose this will give me a chance to pick up Ring of Red, which I never got to play.
Okami and Star Wars Battlefront 2... If those games get rereleases I will be happy.
I would buy some games out the psn since not to long ago my ps2 Died after a long time. My best system actually. i Had bought it on 2003 and it was still kicking. But the only way i would buy games on psn, is if the games are 10 bucks and under. I wouldn't waste money on a game that came out years ago. Example. Kingdom hearts 1 first released on 2002. I would pay the 10 bucks. Don't get me wrong, that's a nice game but why pay more then 10 bucks for a game that's 9 years old. or other good games would be....ff12, splinter cel, budokai 3 and metal gear. Those would be good games but not worth more then 10 bucks.
@FallenOneX Scroll down a bit on this page, there will be deals on ebay to get a b/c PS3 for a good price. Mine was a refurb from Gamestop. I don't like that they took the PS2 feature out of the PS3s, but on the other hand it took the Slim models for the PS3 to finally get steam in sales. So I'm just hoping that the PS4 will be able to play PS1, 2, and 3 games. Plus, how do you know these PS2 games will be only on PS3? I own Crash Bandicoot on disc, always have since 98 and it still works flawlessly, yet I repurchased it via the store when it went on sale because *pretend this is all caps* portable Crash Bandicoot on PSP. *end all caps* I paid for the same game yes, but I had the added benefit of taking it on the go. So I'm betting these PS2 games will work on the Vita and they work on PSP. If you look at it that way you still get something extra. That is, if it turns out that way.
For $10 I'll strongly consider Odin Sphere. For $15 I'll slightly consider Odin Sphere. For $20, I'll pass for now. But first I'll need to upgrade my hard drive. Most PS2 games are at least a couple of gigabytes.
Sony did a great thing for Playstation owners who miss playing their ps2 games besides, it's not a bad at all now players that could not find a ps2 game at gamestop or bestbuy and so on can now find it at psn. I hope sony puts the atelier series on there and kingdom hearts series with re: chain of memories. And other great rpg games from the PS2.
@PhazonBlazer yes!Okami,must Okami.
They really need to release an Okami HD
I don't know why so many people are complaining about the PS2 BC and the fact Sony is re-releasing games on the PSN. If you already own the game then don't buy it again. Nobody is forcing you to. I for one love the fact that they have been doing this. I'm getting to play games I never got a chance to before and I'm getting them at prices that are less than a take out lunch. I'm really happy to see that they are finally adding PS2 games to the system.

The release of Odin Sphere on to PSN has to be the best bit of gaming news I've heard in a while.
