Soulcalibur forges Broken Destiny on PSP

Namco Bandai Games reveals first handheld installment of weapons-based fighter franchise coming to Sony's portable this summer.
Weapons-based fighting-game fans should be en garde: Soulcalibur is making its first strike in the world of handheld gaming. Namco Bandai Games America announced today that Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny will be released exclusively on the PlayStation Portable this summer.
Using many of the fundamental mechanics of last year's Soulcalibur IV, Broken Destiny will feature a roster of more than 20 fighters. Although gamers won't be able to play as Star Wars stand-ins Darth Vader, Yoda, or the Apprentice, the game will attempt to offset those losses with the addition of at least one new character, Dampierre.
Other additions include an expanded version of the character-customization feature that let Soulcalibur IV players make a menagerie of unique-looking fighters to go along with the standard cast. Namco Bandai is also bolstering the series' staple Arcade, Versus, and Survival options with a new single-player mode to ease beginners into the higher levels of play. Part gameplay, part tutorial, the new mode will feature more than 80 missions designed to teach players the ropes and hone their skills.

Ah, man... shame this didn't come out before I vowed never to buy a Namco title again... oh well.
What with Dissidia and now this I'm beggining to think fighting games for the psp have a brighter future. Can't wait to buy them both.
Damn it! Now I gotta find my PSP. I'm sure its in a closet somewhere collecting dust.. (I love SC!)
AWESOME I love SoulCal' and the customisation feature. I just hope they do something about that goddamn piss pore 'story mode' in SoulCal' 4. SC 3 was THE best, due to how much was in it. If in the next SC they combine the great graphics and customisation of 4 and the depth of 3, then it would be god.
Damn you Sony! Swear ta God, every time I get rid of a PSP, you finally drop some sweet new games! Last time, it was Crisis Core and God of War, now it's Soul Calibur, Phantasy Star Portable, Dissidia, and Little Big Planet! I hate you so much right now...
Those are some nice graphics for a PSP title. Seems like developers are still getting better with it, and we haven't seen the best the PSP can do yet. Tekken DR was already hard to top. This looks amazing for a handheld.
Sweet i will add this to tekken 5 and street fighter alpha 3 max, and later tekken 6! who would have guessed that fighting games would be so well implemented on a handheld.

I'm worried Namco will start milking this franchise, Soulcalibur peacked at 2, so that can't be good.
Even more good news for the PSP. First LittleBigPlanet, then Motorstorm, Dissidia, Assasin's Creed, and a couple more. This is going to be a good year for the PSP, and heck...maybe Sony has something up its sleeve for E3. Anyway, can't wait to play Soul Calibur on my PSP.

Should work no problem. Just look at Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection on the PSP - probably the best handheld 3D fighter ever to be made.
Hmmmm. I had a psp but sold it because I hate the way it controls in 3D games. I'd consider getting one again for this. But I just don't know...
I'm a huge Soul Calibur fan, I just pray that the single-player modes won't be as much of a letdown as SC4's were.
sweet! nice to see the PSP getting some good new games - it's been deserving of them and waiting for some for a while.... now all we need is a new GTA game on it too... it's overdue in my opinion. Something new and fresh and not just a port of an old game with new missions (vice city and liberty city...). Though those were absolutely fantastic, I want to see something totally new for PSP.
Damn psp has been getting injected with a lot of good games lately! I hope this continues!!

what is wrong with you people that nay say the game and PSP in general, isn't it pretty amazing that this game can be done on a handheld period??? or is it more amazing that 90% of the DS library is graphically on par or below SNES standards and you're just extremely jealous.
Online/infrastructure fighting? If not, it will be upsetting but I might still buy........maybe........
I am not a big fan of fighting games but there are two that I have always loved. 1- Killer Instinct 2- Soul Blade / Calibur
Cool PSP and PS3 is the platforms for fighting games! I hope they get the design and specs just right for the new PSP model or new PSP just right hope it comes with Bluetooth! :D
from the look of the screens, some of the textures look a little washed out. i know its still a while and they have time to fix it, but i remember how good soul calibur looked on dreamcast, and im sure the psp is more powerful than the dc. itll be interesting to see how it holds up.
Wow... Tekken 6, LBP, Motorstorm, Assassin's Creed, Resistance and now Soul Caliber to name but a few - so many reasons to buy a PSP...
This is great news. I wish Sony would get more 'Simple' games for the system though. That's why enjoy gaming on ipod touch. You can play for a few minutes then stop. PSP games are amazing but you need to put in more time to appreciate them.
I hope it controls a little better that Tekken did. The D pad is a little fishy when it comes to fighters.
Love soul caliber in my opinion it is one of the best fighting games of its time. Can't to try it on the psp
this seems like a bad idea less buttons mean a more complicated control scheme. Not to mention the obvious drop in graphics.
Boring!!! Sony always got games that were different, that is what made them great. Sure Patapon and LocoRoco are good but neither one is that great. They need more originality to win me back, not another ho-hum fighting game or shooter.
Simply amazing. I really cannot wait for this to be released. I will most definitely be keeping a close eye on this title. I've been waiting to get a fighting game for my PSP and it looks like this will be it.
