Japanese publisher launches placeholder site for seemingly urban-warfare-themed new game.
Less than two weeks ago, Square Enix closed on its acquisition of Eidos, joining the role-playing-game-stacked Japanese company with the action-heavy British publisher. And already, it appears as if Eidos is having some influence on its new parent company.
Today, Square Enix launched a teaser page on its official Web site for a new game, and it appears as if urban warfare will play front and center to the proceedings. The page offers a glimpse of artwork of what appears to be a relatively near-future downtown metropolis. Cloaked in ambiguity, the page bears the title "New Game," with the word "mystery" appearing in the URL where Square Enix typically lists the pertinent game's name.
After a short period of time, a quote from John F. Kennedy begins to scroll in the bottom-left corner of the screen. It reads, "The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life."
Soon thereafter, pandemonium erupts in the streets, with a series of explosions rocking the city. As sirens begin to blare, the sounds of small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades become ubiquitous, with wafts of smoke and muzzle flashes rising from various points throughout the city.
As noted by the banner linking to the teaser site on Square Enix's main Web site, the publisher plans to "declassify" the new project during the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo. This year's show will take place in Los Angeles from June 2-4.
too be honest i'm looking forward to another infinite undiscovery, though i'm probably the only one who thinks so.
i smell competition for mercenaries... of course with mercs 2's failure it shouldn't be too hard to come out on top.
square enix should stop making new final fantasies for a while and remake at least 7,8,9 for next gen consoles, so hopefully they can get back to grips
It is quite annoying that there is still no release date for the PS3. Rumours even go that it has been cancelled. (Googled it)
If it's an RPG, I am more eager to wait. I just hope that they haven't canned the PS3 version of The Last Remnant. X360's version may suck(technical issues, might also exist on the PS3), but hell there's a lot of Japanese that has a PS3 as of the moment and continuing the project even with the late release will still benefit them.
hmm. Final Fantasy XIII. its taking its own damn sweet time. is this thing even longer to develop? i mean. we waited 5 long years for XII.
I have the feeling it's going to be a FPS.....though a RTS would be appreciated. EA is STILL promoting Red Alert 3, and that's quickly become a broken record. If this is an FPS, all I will say is 'Meh.' If it's a RTS, I will eagerly await.
They're already doing order of war, i agree with MajorWaffle, Square Enix please set your priorities right and focus finishin the games u already started a long time ago.
Very interesting, maybe squire enix is making way for that in between future. High hopes. (this comment makes no sense :P)
@ Megamanx266 Anyone who has played Final Fantasy VII and is even the least bit familiar with that universe can easily tell by looking at the picture on the site that this has absolutely nothing to do with Final Fantasy VII at all. Though the 2 structures on each side of the river look semi similar to something you might find in Midgar, everything else doesn't even come close to Midgar or the other city from Advent Children (the name eludes me at this moment). Plus neither city in Final Fantasy VII have a river running through the city splitting it in half. Nothing here at all suggests Final Fantasy VII remake and I highly doubt Square would be dumb enough to completely kill the hype around Final Fantasy XIII by suddenly announcing Final Fantasy VII being remade. It's Front Mission, its for the 360, and I think its going to be exclusive since Square seems to be supporting Microsoft over Sony outside of the main Final Fantasy line up.
For those saying that this is gonna be a FF7 remake stop crapping your pants. This picture has absolutely NO connection to Midgard whatsoever. I never played Front Mission but from what I've been reading it sounds like the more probable conclusion.
jimmeyburrows youre WRONG. look at the name... Order of War=wwii rts. keijigoto, you're right. i get xbox magazine and they were all over this before i saw anything about it on the internet. it's definitely front mission. they had other pictures of the sweet looking mechs of the series. it's gonna be front mission for 360, with a ps3 release later on. i saw some controversy about sony guys angry that squeenix had always made frontmission games for playstation, and i bet they will eventually make a platform for ps3.
it's called "Order of War" and it's for PC... Style looks nice... Probably wont buy it... not big on the war games, lol. and to whoever was complaining about action rpg's... the fact is that RPG just means it's heavily story based... gameplay comes second, which is why I still think Dirge Of Cerberus was a great RPG :P but yeah terrible shooter rofl.
lazy_trash - Posted May 4, 2009 3:13 pm PT "it better be another rpg and not another action adventure game draped in rpg mechanics because thats seriously starting to piss me off, ex: new star ocean" Star ocean has been an action RPG ever since it's first release on SNES in 1996. So it's not a wrong thing to do to keep the tradition. Unless you are saying, you don't like ARPG, and don't want developers making anymore of them, then yeah, I can respect that opinion, but not totally agree with it. If done properly, IMO, like the Tales series, ARPG could be alot of fun too, instead of entering commands and watch the onscreen characters dashes it out. You get to smashs some buttons do some combos...etc. Dunno, I like em both. Back to topic, I also am convinced this will be a Front mission. The art tone just screaming Front Mission all over it. Let's wait and see!
look at it this way full metal, if they remake i dont think there gonna change a thing apart from the battle system and graphics other than that REMAKE, REMAKE
new front mission would be cool. all in all though, if they are making another rpg, it better be another rpg and not another action adventure game draped in rpg mechanics because thats seriously starting to piss me off, ex: new star ocean
WHY MAKE A REMAKE OF FF7. THE GAME IS A CLASSIC IF THEY REMAKE FF7 IT WILL BE NO DIFFERENT THAN THE ORIGINAL OTHER THAN THE GRAPHICS YOU IDIOTS. I RATHER HEAR SQUARE MAKING SOME NEW GAMES RATHER THAN THE MOST OVERRATED GAME EVER. I BET HALF OF YOU DIDNT EVEN UNDERSTAND THE PLOT
This game really does look like a front mission game. That said though I think it would be cool if it were a halo type of game.
New games are great! That being said, I still would like to have FFXIII, FFXIII Vesrsus, and oh ya a little game called Kingdom Hearts 3 first please!
we here at square enix are scared of making money and wont give you popular demanded games like ff 7 remake parasite eve 3 or fear effect 3 heres some crap you dont care about!. we call it the wii e3 stratergy. i just had to add this BHumble said : What games do ps3 have that the 360 doesn't have better of? Haha laugh all you want ps3 fan boy but its pretty apparent that the 360 does have better exclusive games and a better online community. You can't fight that haha. better online community ..... EL OH EL
Squenix, now that you have Eidos, revive Fear Effect 3. while your at it, hurry the f*** up with Parasite Eve: the 3rd birthday
the only way SquarEnix could make me give a damn about them again would be to announce Parasite Eve 3 for PS3, otherwise i don't really care anymore. they have completely dried up.
I would have guessed at Chrono Break, but that little bit doesn't really seem much like a Chrono storyline.
Always interested to hear what SquareEnix has up their sleeve! Although, why do they not listen to the masses and JUST RE MAKE FF7!!! It would sell like hot cakes!!! Oh and to all you fan boys wasting your time whining about each others console- wah wah wah, ps3 this xbox360 that.... Ever thought of growing up? Unless you are about 7, then i apologise, that type of mentallity is expected. Are we not all gamers? What is the point in hating when there are clearly good things on all genres of consoles and handheld? What a pile of turd the gaming industry would be if there was only 1 console.. and 1 handheld system. Where would the innovation be?
