Dude They went from using 3 different game engines in the development of this game Quake, 1 & 2 to Unreal. Now from the latest trailer. Visually it apears to be Unreal 3 game engine. It definitely looks better than reg Unreal enigine from video complete with Physics engine. that means they had to start over at leat 4 times if its using the enigine I think it using. Although reg Unreal engine is probly similar to develop on Unreal 3. Except redoing art again.
[UPDATE] Shacknews report of personnel exodus casts doubt on Duke Nukem Forever; developer dismisses headline as alarmist, says game is on track.
Duke Nukem Forever has been in development for the better part of a decade. However, the past 24 hours have seen the game return to the spotlight, courtesy of a report on Shacknews.com.
Yesterday evening, Shacknews posted an article under the title "3D Realms Sees Major Employee Departures, Fate of DNF in Question?" The site cited "numerous sources" as saying that "up to 10 major team members have left the company," including several departures "within the past few days."
Seven 3D Realms staffers were named as having left the company, including Scott Alden, Will Bate, and Andy Hanson. Shacknews later identified four others--Brian Cozzens, Kyle Davis, Keith Schuler, and Charlie Wiederhold--as having departed to another Texas-based studio, Gearbox Software. The quartet is reportedly now working on an unidentified upcoming Brothers in Arms game.
When the Shacknews story broke, GameSpot attempted to contact 3D Realms founder George Broussard, who still had not returned requests for comment as of press time. However, 3D Realms webmaster and longtime staffer Joe Siegler addressed the Shacknews article on the developer's forums.
"I dispute the doomsday scenario painted by the Shacknews headline," Siegler said. "I love how these news stories say 'Up to 10' and everyone thinks that the entire team has left, or the majority have or whatnot. As was pointed out in the story, this didn't all happen like YESTERDAY. We've had others come in recently, and there's more coming in, too. This impression I've been reading about 'over half the team leaving' implies that there's nobody left, and the folks who are still here are trying to muddle through. Hardly."
Siegler also said that work on Duke Nukem Forever was moving ahead. However, he cautioned against inflated expectations for the game, which has been in development since 1997. "Some people seem to think that DNF will be like the second coming of Christ, will solve all the world's problems, wash your dishes, and give you guilt, sin-free orgasms," he said. "It's a game. It will be a fun game."
[UPDATE] Meanwhile, over on the Shacknews forums, Broussard surfaced to assure the public that DNF is almost--almost--done. "Physics and animation systems are virtually finished and shippable," he said. "It's simply maintenance and polish from here on out. We haven't needed to make substantial changes to those systems in months. The changes we have made, were made without great effort. Things are never as bleak as they appear, as is often the case when you simply have one side of the story."
I wasn't married in 97 now I got a kid in school.Atleast now I can play multiplayer with my kid instead of my friends. Only duke knows how to tip a stripper
On track? WHAT TRACK? To be the most over hyped/delayed piece of vaporware in history? (Thats right boys and girls, the game does not exsist) I wonder if at this point they even FEEL it when they lie to us. The game is NOT ready NOT coming. Its more like the 2nd coming of Pee Wee Herman. Anyone who things "DNF is in question" has been under a rock for the last 7 years. DNF has been a dead game since 2000, after the first three years of dev and missed release dates, people gave up on it, Oh well....GTA IV will be tons better, Duke would seem tame now. I mean when they started this development I was still using a Pentium 75Mhz PC
this game was anounced in 1997 and its now 2007 HAY take-two release the game on its first anounced date! lol
I suspect their money ran out and some weren't getting paid and the staff left. No other reason why so many would leave all at once.
George is a Narcissist. On his site he only keeps cronies who agree with him and suck up to his kingship. Any one who shows disagreement, however polite, or who asks "Why does it take 10 years to make a game?" he bans you from his site. Narcissist only surround themselves with folk who are yes men. Go to that sight and see all the George Fan boys. Question George, and expect his loyal cultish mindless followers to take out their pitchforks and torches and hang you.
i hope this game doesnt turn out like diakatana.... i doubt it wil though, they are a talented bunch over at 3D-Realms on another note, this game better last about 30-40 hours.... i waited 6 years for half life 2 to way in at 20, ive waited 10 for duke nukem forever......
Amazing, some news. Honestly, when this game is finally released it will sell by the truckload, if only because of it's infamous status, just like a new starcraft but with with a more macho haircut.
I wish they would give us some new screens i hope they are better the old ones are realy bad graphics no a days
@dwmorrow Somebody is actually expecting something from this game? Wow... I think I'd be hard pressed to be disappointed by it, honestly.
hmmm. i'm expecting a funny version of half life. i really want to play this, but by the time it comes out, my computer'll be outdated.
Duke Nukem forever...and ever.....and ever...and ever....and ever....and ever....and ever...and ever...and ever...and ever...and ever...and ever......
I really dont see the need for a game to be in development for a decade plus, a few years at most, that is unless the company has had major problems for a very long time. Otherwise there is no reason whatsoever for a game to be in development for that long.
Someone would stuff a turkey with crunchy, gum-slicing CD bits filled with crap? You definitely have odd tastes, sir.
Duke Nuke'm Forever.. exclusively made for the Infinium Phantom Pre-order now and receive a free demo of "They said we'd never finish it,.. who's laughing now?!"
Obviously this game has inflated expectations, but WTF does 3D Realms except when it's been in development for nearly TEN YEARS? Jeez.
I'll probably manage to finish WoW before DNF ever comes out! And if it does get released, I'll know what I'm going to stuff our Thanksgiving turkey with...
In this article I don't really care about DNF-What's important to me is that 3D Realm's main staffs moved to Gearbox Software. I mean, Gearbox is making friggin' cool BIAHH! If former 3D realm staffs are really making BIAHH it would be soooo good for BIAHH. Good...
How many people have been developing this game? 1? It is called "forever" because that's how long it is taking them to make it (if indeed they are working on it) I have to agree with others when they say "I'll believe it when I see it on the shelves". Oh, wait... maybe they are still working on the graphic engine and you'll need DirectX 25 or a Playstation 9 to run it  Yup, it is still "on track" for the PS9 launch  or they may be waiting for the release of the holodeck... mmm.... that may be it... DNF is vaporware and nobody will care if it really makes it to the stores some day in the distant future
HOLY CR*P! Go look at the trailer from way back 2001, this game would have been unbelievable. Had they got their arses in gear and finished it, we would probably be using this as a reference to grade current FPSs. I don't think I'd mind if the graphics look like the trailer, it would be old-school, and a breath of fresh air compared to current games that are all graphics and no substance.
You know what, the game is never going to come out and besides, Duke Nukem was fun for a bit, but who really cares if they never come out with another game?
Dust24311: I disagree. There's also a chance it might still be adequately fun and nice to look at. Prey dropped out and still came back with a decent punch. The problem with Daikatana was probably the huge hype that was building up before it even came out. I've reached the point for DNF where I am totally apathetic about it.
They're probably gonna start over and make it a Wii exclusive or something. That would be about par for the course for this game. No game should take this long to develop. This game may be good, but no matter how good it is, some people will be disappointed with it because of the 10 year wait. I plan to get it whenever it comes out. If it has good gameplay, and the attitude is there from Duke Nukem 3D, this will be a really fun game. Edit: Oh yeah, and it might actully come out after the second coming of Christ. There's a pretty good chance of that happening first.
Dust24311 "DNF after all this time... can anyone say Daikatana??? HAHAHA" You beat me to it. This game has been hanging around for so long, there's no way it's going to be good anymore. I'm betting that either the gameplay or the graphics (or both) will be so outdated that it will flop, and hard.
OUCH,I wonder if DKF will wind up like Unreal 1 was a great game but half the people who made it disspaered into the gameing night by the time it came out. Diakatana is better than half arsed games like Q4 and such so DFK cant be bad but if it is another seires to bite the dust...
Duke Nukem..hmmm,... this game was being talked about when Madden 97 came out..............people will nitpick this game apart when it finally comes out... every review will in some way, shape or form include the line " a good game, but not worth a 10 year wait"
"Maybe the game is still running on the old Unreal engine... man, imagine what a complete debacle that would turn out to be..." Well, at least people would be able to run it with integrated video (Unreal is usually CPU dependant, and with today's monster processors...). I'll be happy if its an average game. Daikatana took a long time, and got ragged a lot for it (nevermind the game itself). DNF is so old that making fun of it got boring @_@
OMG I JUST WATCHED THE TRAILER AGAIN(even thought its 5 years old).... THE GAME LOOKS AMAZING !!!!! if its anything like that then it will be the best fps ever... if its not like that, then the new Duke Nukem Forever should come with the old Duke Nukem Forever that the trailer showed.... because we all know that they started over...
I say it will come out in another 10 years or so, and the article is wrong, it will be the second coming of christ.
It's almost done! Why haven't we seen any screenshots or heard any news about it. I thought this game would never come out. This is a huge surprise! Hopefully we'll see some movies or screenshots of it soon...
Maybe the game is still running on the old Unreal engine... man, imagine what a complete debacle that would turn out to be... "Introducing DUKE NUKEM FOR...oh my god, the goggles! THEY DO NOTHING!"
I'm still waiting for this game, because when the old (unreal engine) trailer came out, it looks great, and it you look at it now, it still does. Maybe not as high poly as the current games, but certainly on par even with the graphics back then, and the gameplay they've shown in the trailer with the interaction of the world is great. If the current state of the game is anything like the old trailer, it would certainly be a great game. Of course all those are just IFs...
I'm with NinjaFoot. And what about that quote: "Some people seem to think that DNF will be like the second coming of Christ, will solve all the world's problems, wash your dishes, and give you guilt, sin-free orgasms," he said. "It's a game. It will be a fun game." I wonder who thinks that? The one armed man? This game can join Thrill Kill, Resident Evil 1.5, and the 64DD in vaporware hell for all I care. Duke Nukem was popular for it's time when the internet was just taking off but they have waited too long and games like Unreal, Quake, Doom, Half - Life have now ran laps around these guys. And with games like Resistance, FEAR, HALO, and Crysis ( I love that game already ) coming out, Duke Nukem's other claim to fame, spoofing other FPS and other pop culture references will be outdated if they still decide to go that route again. I wonder if they learned from Prey and redid the game from the ground up because that's the only way they are even going to stay relevant.
wow. this game has been almost done for about 2 years. give up, world. if duke nukem forever comes out, it's a sign of the apocalypse.
