Star Wars: 1313 'business as usual' for LucasArts

Studio says Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm has not affected the development of the third-person action adventure franchise set in the Star Wars universe.

Today's announcement that Disney has purchased Star Wars studio Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion will reportedly not affect the upcoming video game title Star Wars: 1313, which is currently in development at LucasArts.

According to a statement from LucasArts (as first reported by IGN), it's "business as usual" for all internal projects at the studio.

The acquisition deal--which will see Disney release a new Star Wars film every two to three years after bringing out Star Wars Episode 7 in 2015--was discussed by Disney chief executive Robert Iger during a conference call earlier this week.

In the call, Iger spoke about Disney's plans to utilise the Star Wars license for games, revealing the that company will focus on social and mobile games internally, and rely on licensing deals to allow third-party developers to create Star Wars titles for consoles.

Star Wars: 1313 was first announced in May this year. The internally developed third-person action adventure game will see players take on the role of a bounty hunter navigating a subterranean metropolis, Level 1313, beneath the surface of the planet Coruscant.

At the time of its announcement, LucasArts had revealed that the game was being developed with the help of artists across the Lucasfilm organisation, including LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, Lucasfilm Animation Ltd, and Skywalker Sound. The game will be based on the Unreal engine and feature full-body performance capture.

According to LucasArts, the game will emphasise fast-paced combat, and the game's hero will use human skills and gadgets, rather than supernatural Force powers. In addition, the game will feature a combination of cover-based combat, platforming, and "playable cinematic gameplay."

buisness as usual untill they change development at the mid-point range and change it to xbox or playstation exclusive and screw over the pc development of this game, which was what the game was running on at E3.

Business as usual until the game is finished and Disney decide, 'We've had a great idea: We're shutting you down.'

Star Wars Battlefront 3 combined with Star Wars Empire at War 2. Gives you two perspectives of the Battlefield. Including most epic timelines: The Old Republic Wars, Clone Wars, Galactic Civil War, and what ever is planned next. And every planet in the Star Wars Galaxy!

Actually combine all the Star Wars games and see what you can come up with.

Here's to the assimilation of a lackluster production company. Star Wars is passe and outdated by current standards; Frankly, what stood as futuristic or glossy in the 1970s is well out of place in the modern world despite rehashings and some shiny effects.

Good riddance :)

This is the first I've heard of an Episode 7 in any confirmable format.

Even for billions, I can't imagine Lucas selling his...his CHILD...to anybody.  I can only hope some great Star Wars games (and movies, etc.) come out of this (hopefully PC games, hint hint).

for 4 billions dollars, i would too...its the same as the creators of ninja turtles...money talks after that long with your beloved franchise

I can't believe what I am reading... George Lucas sold his rights to Disney... with all the Empire he built himself! The good point is that he will finally stop messing with the original trilogy! I can't wait to see those Episodes 7-8-9!!

eriktkire

@Jeff_Langlois There isn't really that much to see.  Everything after ROTJ is in the form of books and comics.

If they do the Imperial remnant with Thrawn and the resurrection of Palpatine they'll either have to recast new faces or go CGI or all out animated for the obvious main characters...  Can't get Harrison Ford, Hammil and Fisher to reprise their rules at their age compared to that point in the timeline.

... or they could go further down and focus on the beginning of the next era with the Skywalker descendants.

It's gonna be a hard sell to Star Wars fans.  I'd consider myself a vague fan from my youth and even I've done enough post saga reading to know what happens in the universe (which is far more interesting than the movies I might add).

I look forward to seeing alot of (pointless) fanboy rage when the time comes.

@eriktkire  @Jeff_Langlois They could also do Kyle Katarn's story or the Yuuzhan Vong War in the next three episodes.

IGFGAThrawn

@chris0004090  @eriktkire  @Jeff_Langlois  Sorry, but neither will happen. They already said the new trilogy will be a brand new story and not an adaptation, as extracted from Lucas' vision. Fortunately, Lucas is not writing, directing, or casting the movie.

@mrzero1982pt2  @Microsteve don't forget they have their scientology-esque boat cruises which are specifically designed to indoctrinate children in Disney morals and values.

Look it up, it really is a "disney education" thing for families where the kids have the Disney version of school classroom on a massive cruise liner.  Some holiday!?!

With this and Angry Birds, at what point does George Lucas make so much money that he loses all physical form and ascends into the cosmos as a beam of pure energy?

Hey_Jay

@BravoOneActual I imagine he already has, and has now evolved with the ability to revert back at will. You know, 'cause sometimes he's curious to remember what it's like to be one of us normies.

Looking forward to this game, i just hope disney doesn't put their silly childish logo on this game's cover. Their childish logo ruins pretty much every adult content produced by disney, from movies to gaming.

Now Star Wars and Indiana Jones can be in the Kingdom Hearts series!             (Darth Vader  kidnaps Cinderella, Snow white and Kairi. Sora, Donald Duck, Goofy helps Luke Skywalker and learns from Yoda how to use the Force. The Death Star blows up Sora's Homeworld. Sora seeks revenge and is tempted to join the Dark Side) An extreme alternate version of Star Wars

Hopefully 'business as usual' doesnt mean releasing underwhelming bombs. Im slightly excited to hear theyre planning a new movie.. but one every 2 to 3 years is just dumb.

@coop36 Well, weren't the prequel movies released three years apart? Or is that what were referring to?

I just hope they don't go overboard. I've already had more than enough of the Clone Wars. It's been a long time since I've been excited about anything Star Wars related.
