What we heard: Ever since the first Battlefront hit consoles in fall 2004, the series has proved a cash cow for its publisher, LucasArts. Mixing Battlefield-style combat with Star Wars lore, the first game was a hit on the PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 2. It quickly blossomed into a full-fledged series, with a sequel proving popular on the same three platforms and the PlayStation Portable the following year.
Now, according to C&VG, the series is getting a third installment, courtesy of UK-based design house Free Radical. According to the site, the TimeSplitters developer, which recently inked a long-term deal with LucasArts, has been given the franchise. If true, the news basically all but signals the end of LucasArts' relationship with original Battlefront developer Pandemic, which is already shopping the sequel to Mercenaries to other publishers.
So where does the next-gen-console part of the story come in? Well, since LucasArts' deal with Free Radical is for next-gen consoles, it stands to reason that, if the studio is working on Battlefront, it is making the game for a new platform. Which platform, exactly, you ask? That's unclear, but it's worth noting Free Radical did wow Electronic Entertainment Expo goers with Haze, the futuristic first-person shooter it is developing for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC for Ubisoft.
The official story: When asked to comment on a) the Free Radical-Battlefront report and b) the next-gen Battlefront rumor, a LucasArts rep succinctly responded, "I can do neither. This is all just rumor and speculation, to which we don't comment."
Bogus or not bogus?: That Free Radical is working on Battlefront? Probably not bogus. Given Pandemic's exit from the scene, it seems logical to hand the Battlefront license over to a shooter-centric studio. As for one of the best-selling Star Wars franchises of all time coming to next-gen consoles? That's a no-brainer: not bogus.
Mace360 how can you be so sure of this, and judging from your name your a 360fanboy and biaest toward your console. How can you say what has better internet if you dont own a ps3 ? Plus this game is on PC and PC has better online play anyway.
all i would want in it would be 1.more areas in your mother ship in space battles 2.more heroes 3.more maps (like inside the execution arena from No. 2 4.and more of a choice between characters( also being able to choose a weapon)
i liked renegade squadron for the PSP.I think as an added bonus, they should let you unlock weapons and credits instead of just having all the same weapons
I hope not, Battlefront is probably the most overrated Star Wars series of all time. They need to make sequels to other, better star wars games. Like Jedi Knight for instance.
this is one of m favorite franchises to play multiplayer and im dying for a sequil. if they dont make it im going to hurt someone.
Do you guys expect more Jedis, units and maps? Here's my expectations for SWB III: More jedis than ever , bring in the whole Jedi Union!!! Special characters, eg:Bacara, Bly, Gree and other Commanders Extra factions, eg: Clone Commandos and ARC troopers More vehicles and bigger space in orbital assaults MORE WEAPONS Interchangeable equipments... That's about it.. MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU
hey evry1 can sum1 plz answer my question. will star wars bf 3 cum on xbox 360 ?? and also i think it will be ill if they do they shud put lego star wars in the battlefront game that will mke it soo cool !!!
this will be sweet... just as long as the AI is better, especially in space battles.Isn't it annoying when you land a command ship in enemy hanger, only for teammates to nick it and get it blown up?
Free Radical isnt a bad developer.. if anyone knows.. most of the members used to be a part of Rare. They left when MS bought them out. And formed Free Radical.. so therefore some of the guys did work on Goldeneye. This game should be sweet.
I'll agree that Battlefront is a pretty good game but the controls were kinda loose. Anybody play Republic Commando? The controls on that game were smoother than BF. Anyways, a BF3 would be a great game. All they need now is make it so that it's more TEAM oriented. PS- Why don't they make a sequel for REPUBLIC COMMANDO?! that game rocks! Lucas Arts make us a sequel!
Wow, this is awesome news if true. Free Radical has really good knack for FPS controls on consoles (they worked on Goldeneye, afterall), and I think it's actually possible that they will surpass Pandemic in terms of this franchise. I can't wait to see what they do with it, because I'm sure it will be mega sweet. Since Free Radical is an FPS developer, I wonder if we might see a little more attention given to the single player campaign this time around? Treating it as a full-fledged Star Wars FPS sounds in order to me.
Maybe now It'll finally get a little more team-based and pickup where Battlefield 2 (A Land where teamwork has been long forsaken) left off, giving us some squads and maybe even a Command system. Then again, I wouldn't want the sheer chaos of the fighting to be dumbed down just for a bit more tactical gameplay, so It's a case of ballancing out the goods and the bads of this type of game. Either way, looking forward to it. SWftw:D
Free Radical are the most accomlished FPS makers at the moment (Halo fans please hush) and this is a very interesting proposition. However, i hope that the game is going to be more first person based because that is what free rad are best at.
I loved BF2. BF3 should be awesome, seriously. Maybe they could improve the space battles and the jedi controls.
I NEED BATTLEFRONT.....AND IT BETTER HAVE:- 1. Better Space Levels...where the ship isnt comprised of just 6 rooms 2. Flying vehicles on the ground (Battlefront 1 style) 3. Old maps....Bespin Platforms! And not forgetting...a release SOON lol
Battlefrnt 1 & 2 are my most favourite shooters. But, I wonder why they gave it over to Free Radical?
mrdelriego "There wont be a wii version because lucasarts does not support it, that's a good thing because the wii stinks." Fanboy... Gonna be a great game! Hopefully they release it on all systems... :)
I think no one shoudl judge this matter right now until further information fo the game and gameplay footages.
sweet, but just make the weapons feel a little stronger....and the vehicles are way overpowered....i mean, the rocket soldiers arent even significant against a large vehicle.... they should stick more to the rock papers scissors thing like BF, which made it good.. other than that, the game is great!
