I really hope they can pull this off, it would be really cool to see Sega characters playable all in one game, and hey if Nintendo can pull it off with Mario why not Sega with Sonic?
Sonic and other mascots set to hit the courts early next year in Europe and North America.
Sonic the Hedgehog is in a competitive mood of late. Taking a break from his normal evil-thwarting activities, he's penned in to showcase his company crossover dominance in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games next month and Super Smash Bros. Brawl in February, respectively.
Sonic's also going to take care of some business in his own backyard, as Sega today announced Sega Superstars Tennis, a mascot sports game from the latest Foundation 9 acquisition, Sumo Digital. The game is currently set for release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Wii, and Nintendo DS in Europe and North America in early 2008. The Xbox 360 and PS3 will feature online play.
Sonic may be the publisher's ace, but it will draw a pool of more than 15 playable characters from its lengthy history, including Super Monkeyball's AiAi, Space Channel 5's Ulala, and Samba De Amigo's Amigo. Each character will have its own abilities, as well as home courts, like Sonic's Green Hill Zone.
Sumo Digital is no stranger to the subject matter, having previously developed Virtua Tennis 3 for the Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation Portable and Virtua Tennis World Tour for the PSP. The studio has also worked with Sega before on recent versions of the Outrun series for Xbox, PS2, PSP, and PC.
If it is really an improvement over Wii Tennis it will be worth it. but since it's from the same who developed Virtua Tennis i expect high standars. Online rating-ranked-championships please!!
Wow...It looks nice, and with all of the Sega classics as playable Characters/arenas. I hope there is a Skys of Acadia level in the game
BEAT!!!! YES!!!! lol I only will get this to play as Beat. I'm only getting any game that "at least" has a jgr or jsrf character and this will be the only one I'll get until or unless they decide to make JSR 2
Here are some characters that have been confirmed: Sonic The Hedgehog Amy Rose Dr. Robotnik Ulala (Space Channel 5) Aiai (Super Monkey Ball) Samba (Samba De Amigo) Here are my three hoping for characters: Beat (Jet Grind Radio) - There was a level photo in the recent Nintendo Power that featured, hopefully, a level from Jet Grind Radio, so here's hoping. Nights (Journey of Dreams) Vyse Dyne (Skies of Arcadia)
Sega answer to what Capcom, SNK, Namco and Marvel did too look their games. But this form is in Tennis.
I'd rather go outside and jump rope wearing nothing but pink short-shorts and get gang raped by a group of elephants and have it all get posted on YouTube than play something by the name of "Sega Superstars Tennis"; WTF is that? I mean, what characters are there? Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, basically a showdown of Sega furries yiffing it on the tennis court. What else could there be? The Datona USA rides battle it out against the Virtua Racing polygon cars? The Virtua On mechs go at it with tennis balls instead of rockets and lasers? The Virtua Fighters pick up a tennis racket? Or heck, unlock the Panzer Dragoon character to go against the unlockable Galaxy Force cruiser? And if we're lucky, the Alien 3 Gun gunner vs the Virtua Cop cop or even House of the Dead guy, or maybe, just maybe that game I can't recall where you gun from a helicopter; can they even use those character? Oh, and that Nights pixie? Why don't they just wait for the next Mario Tennis to make itself to the Wii, and they can just add Sonic and gang to the mix like they're doing with SSBB.
I've never played a Virtua Tennis title and hear great things about the series. . .This could be a great game for me, at least.
This will just be a kiddie version of virtua tennis 3 with sonic instead of real life pro players. Sega sure knows how to recycle their code.
What about some other sega heroes? I want to play tennis with 'G' from the house of the dead games! or Joe Musashi from Shinobi!
once AGAIN we see how nintendo sets a standard and others try to follow suit. Just HOW many party games have we seen since Mario Party came out? the problem is nintendo can, as in the past, let this get to their head and start thinking their every move is gold. lets hope they dont do it again
dang, so many tennis and ping pong games coming out, and I've yet to play one... in fact, I've still no desire
Interesting. I enjoy tennis, but these characters swingging raquets. I will be interested to see how this develops.
Sega has been doing great lately and with Sonic back as a major character in gaming it makes sense to capitalize now. Tennis has global appeal and favors the Wii which has helped Sega's blue mascot the most this gen. It all ties together.
Sounds promising. I remember how great the 1st Virtua Tennis on the Dreamcast was and how Out Run 2 woke me up when I had all but given up on video games (coolest version of Magical Sound Shower I ever heard and I'm tring to learn how to do that snazzy burn out before the race... long story dont ask ;) )
I'm w/ roadrunner1178 on this one. I liked the Mario Tennis games, but I truly liked the N64/Gameboy Color combo, better than the 'Cube version, 'cause the former had more secret courts-themed to characters, w/o any theme-gimmick, & most of all, it had the connectivity, but I digress. In any event, this may be a good move for Sega.
@nfc1nfl: So are you saying that the crapbox 360 has good games that arn't the staple of the system or the mascot. Plus the PS3 will be getting good games soon enough within the next year or two, games which will probably be better than most the games on other consoles. I think Sega is smart in this decision because everyone always wants to play as a certain character and when you can play with your friends it's even better. Go SEGA!
Sumo did a great job with Virtua Tennis 3, so I'm expecting them to do a good job here. As we all know, Sonic has lost a lot of credibility over the past few years, but I doubut that will affect the quality of this game.
Sega, sega, sega these guys have had a great run and hopefully they will continue to have a successful run. Yet, I feel this venture they are going on is going to be a downfall. Sonic was an excellent game, back in the day. It was even decent when they brought it out unto the GameCube, but Sonic has had a good life and now I think that its time his gaming days are put to rest. Sega needs to pay attention to how other franchises have done, before they make this game. Look at EA with their Medal of Honor games. They ruined an excellent game franchise , and I am afraid Sega is going to follow that same path.
It was only a matter of time before Sega started doing like Nintendo and making tons of sports/party and racing games with their characters. This follows in the steps of the "Sega superstars" Eyetoy game. Remember?
I can think of only one Sonic universe characters that I'd want to play as. Ah, well. Hopefully it'll be good.
Playing Xbox One games on somebody else's console will also require a check-in every hour. Full Story
