Super Mario Bros. 3DS en route
Nintendo design chief Shigeru Miyamoto confirms new 3D installment in 25-year-old platformer franchise is in development.
Nintendo has already announced a number of expected first-party titles for the 3DS, its glasses-free 3D handheld device that is due for release in the US on March 27. Included among these titles are Kid Icarus: Uprising, Star Fox 64 3D, Paper Mario, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
One obvious omission from this list is its hallmark platformer Super Mario Bros., but that will soon be rectified. As part of a new "Iwata Asks" interview posted to Nintendo's official website, design guru Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that he is at work on a new Super Mario Bros. title for the 3DS.
"In the interests of adopting new technology for the Super Mario Bros. tradition, I am now making a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Nintendo 3DS system," Miyamoto told Nintendo president Satoru Iwata as part of the interview. "I want to show everyone as soon as possible what the new Super Mario Bros. will be like on the Nintendo 3DS."
Unfortunately, Miyamoto did not provide a more specific time period for when Super Mario Bros. 3DS will be formally unveiled.
After 25 years on the market, the Super Mario Bros. franchise hasn't lost any of its vigor. As part of the company's blundering fiscal report last week, the publisher said that New Super Mario Bros. on the DS sold 3.73 million units worldwide from April-December 2010, bringing its lifetime total to 26.21 million units. New Super Mario Bros. Wii exhibited equally impressive numbers, selling 6.58 million units during the quarter and 21.28 million units total.
side scrolling side scrolling sidescrolling PRETTY PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! new super mario bro's 3D!!!!!! please please please!!!!
@GamingFriendly Wrong. If you were actually alive in 1986, you would understand that Mario is exactly what you described: a fresh concept with a great story(somewhat) and fun to play.
I think what Gaming Friendly is trying to say when he states that "Mario games aren't even games" is that he is from a newer generation of gamers that do not consider Mario to be the cutting edge, uber game of the moment, the measuring stick by which all other games are judged. Mind you, while games like Super Mario Galaxy and NSMB have been absolutely INCREDIBLE, this particular gamer obviously didn't grow up in my generation, when Nintendo reigned supreme. I could be wrong, but I would speculate that he is of a newer generation where the big titles were games like Halo and Grand Theft Auto, not Mario, which really just means that everyones defending what they grew up on and thats fine, but I have to say, GamingFriendly, why are you reading an article about a new Mario game if you don't even consider it a game? LOL
only N64 and GC had just 1 Mario game they all are very unique and yes CoD sucks but it is possible to be bored of the series anyways. I couldn't stay interested in the first Galaxy enough to finish it personally but I loved everything before it(and NSMBW). I would be much happier with a nsmb3ds.
@gamingfrindly so what your saying is that mario games are all the same but with small tweaks?? so tell me this, what do you see when you play all the war FPSs out there, they are all basicly the same game with OH LOOK DIFFERENT EMEMY AND OOOO NEW SHINY GUN. they are all the same too but with tweaks. any true gamer can see that, plus when you think about it Nintendo only release 1 main mario platformer per console with the exception of new super mario bros and galaxy 2 as they all appeared on the wii. ( i think also mario bros 2 and 3 also appeared on the NES so 3 for that system) so 9 real mario platformers spanning 5 home consoles over 25 years isnt that bad, now look at your FPS's in the rate your seeing COD pushed out your looking at having COD black ops modern warfare 25, in the same time scale, so who is rehashing the same stuff over and over. look at fifa its basicly the same game every year after year but oh look i can push this button now and and do a flick that i could do in the last game but this flicks better lol. Everyone uses there franchises to the fullest but saying nintendo are the worst for releasing the same over and over, i think you need to open ya eyes to what your realy playing.
You mean Nintendo is making another Mario game? Unheard of!
Nintendo = Quality
@gamingfrendly You just said that Mario games aren't games. Besides, no one even knows what to really expect with this new Mario title. Perhaps it will be different from past games, you know?
You don't call he Mario titles games? Please tell me what you do regard as a game? I think in all my time on this site that has to be the daftest thing I've ever read. I don't usually comment on these matters. I'll make an exception for you... gamingfrendly!
@dawnofhero boy i have ben playing games since 1986 so i dont expect you to tell me thats i didnt beat a mario game i didnt say i favor shooters i favor games with fresh consept, great story and fun game play for me mario is the same thing with small tweaks.
@gamingfrendly Nintendo revived video games after the crash of 83' and are known for making some of the best games of all time. If you can't beat a Mario game, let alone even played one before, then you are not a true gamer. Shooting games and gangster games are the ones that are recycled.
@gamingfrendly Yeah, because everyone knows CoD 4, MW2 and Black Ops are completely different games. They can't possibly be in the same franchise.
people really need to grew up how on earth you buy the same game twice all mario games are recycled for god sake wake up get a 360 or a ps3 or some thing i dont call those games.
I actually wouldn't mind if they did another Mario 64 remake as long as they improved graphics, added more levels/stars, and more characters.
Nintendo knows how to make people buy their new system!!!
Does it mean new super mario bros. as in the new super mario bros series for DS and Wii? i really hope its a sequel the the Wii version, it was the best 2D mario game since the snes years
I hope it's more like Mario Galaxy.
@Metroidfire That would be so cool!
I'm sorry but Sony realy lost me with how they have handled the PS3, and PSP as of late, sure they support it every 2 years with great first party games, but after that they have a bunch of crapy third party ports hit both platforms. Nintendo at least makes an effort to make their handheld and console games different not just in graphics, but in gameplay, and style, PoP on the Wii was reviewed well, so was Golden Eye, and CODBO, plus they have some great exclusive titles on the Wii from Nintendo as well. 3DS line up has more games I want to play then what the NGP has, plus they are not mere console ports like the NGP is showing off but full games with new gameplay, great graphics with or without 3D, and better first party titles. IE I want to play Mario Kart 3DS, Splinter Cell 3DS, Kid Icraus, The Conduit, StarFox 64, Super Mario Bros 3DS, and my personal fav game I want is Metroid 3DS! I hope they do it like they did on the Wii........ Also a 007 game on the 3DS would rock so hard hint hint Nintendo!
Some good news.
now all there missing is a 3d fzero game
Always good to hear of a Mario game coming out, it is in-evitable same as Zelda.
How is this news? A Mario game coming to a Nintendo console is just not news - it's inevitable!
Confirmation of a Mario game on a Nintendo system!? New and exciting!
OMG! After watching the video every single game felt like I was in the level. So many memories. I kept thinking about hidden levels the whistles and all the things that Mario was about to do next. The memories are priceless! :o)
@dawnofhero I get what your saying since most Wii games are still too expensive (for me) even used. A used copy of NSMB DS on Amazon is only $20 right now. So I'll assume used 3DS games will hover around that price (at least $10 off) by Oct.-Nov.
its a remake of a remake like a repost of a repost
This will not be a remake, people. -_- Wow.
I think it will be interesting to see what happens with this...
I don't play nintendo much but I'm tired of all the mario remakes of super mario. They should make a mario galaxy instead at least to change things up a bit
The 3ds is looking better every day.
Knew this was coming...now I REALLY can't wait for the system to come out. Got mine on pre-order.=)
@monson21502: NSMBW was rough for me, but maybe that's because I went after all the Star Coins. I needed a buddy to help me get most of them.
@DrEvilKoala I know I said myself that it's the gameplay that matters the most, Nintendo have done with Mario what SEGA wish they had done with Sonic, Nintendo are the masters of making a franchise repeatedly succeed. All I'm saying is that no matter how 'cool' the 3D may be it's only really going to be a gimmick. You wouldn't watch Avatar or Tron in 3D if the graphics were pixelated blocks. I'm not hating Nintendo at all, the company has made gaming the success that it is - and I love them for it. But graphics do mean something. I know you said "We don't really care about the graphics", but if they were complete balls you would :p @DaneGamer Would have to agree with you on this one.
Nintendo knows how to make Mario shine on any system. So I definitely can't wait to see what they do on the 3DS. :D I definitely do NOT want them to stop making Mario games, even if it has been over 25 years. They are fun to play!
@drummer131, i think mario sunshine dryed up all the good mario games. havent really liked any mario game since mario 64. new smb ds was ok but that was so short and easy i felt ripped off after buying it. the one on the wii was a copy and paste deal with waggle controls and co op so you never die lol
I hope it's like Super Mario World, with a large World Map and tons and tons of really hard-to-find secrets. There hasn't been a Mario game like SMW since SMW.
Not really a suprise is it? Good to hear it being confirmed though.

Can't have a Nintendo system without Mario, am I right?
This is great, I can't wait for this! But I'd also really really love to see super mario galaxy 3d announced for the 3DS! ( not a remake of the wii version, i want a whole new game!)
@Land-0-Funk I doubt the price will go down by fall. New Super Mario Bros. DS is almost five years old and it is still $35 brand new.
@Land-0-Funk I'm going to do the same but only because I wouldn't be able to afford it until fall also if the pre-orders are to go by they will be sold out for a while because the pre-orders double that of the Wiis.
3DS is sounding better and better, I'm gonna wait until the fall to pick one up though. All the used release games should be pretty cheap by then.
It's not a remake people. -.- This sounds promising. I hope there will be some multiplayer like the Wii version. That was frantic, but fun.:p
@legoislandfan Super Mario Land wasn't part of the Super Mario Bros. series it wasn't made by Miyamoto like all the other games in the time line it was made by Gunpei Yokoi.
if new super mario bros makes it into this time line then why doesn't super mario land???
sounds like it's gonna be a new super mario Bros game. not a NEW super mario bros game.
I want super smash bros. 3d
So is it a new Super Mario Bros. game? Or is it a "NEW" Super Mario Bros. game?
