Tera going free-to-play February 5

New "Rising" version of MMORPG to be available without subscription fee next month with no level cap or content restrictions for new players.

En Masse Entertainment's massively multiplayer online role-playing game Tera will be free-to-play when it relaunches at Tera: Rising February 5, it was announced today. Previously, the free-to-play switch was scheduled to take place sometime in February. The new version of the game will not require a subscription fee and new players will not face any content restrictions or a level cap.

Though Tera: Rising will be available to play for free, players can use real-world money to purchase various items on an a la carte basis from the in-game marketplace.

Past and current Tera subscribers will be awarded permanent "founder" status, which carries numerous exclusive privileges. Those who pay $15 per month for "Elite" status will be granted extra dungeon rewards, 10 bonus quests per day, a daily delivery of items and boosts, an elite mount, in-game store discounts, and waived brokerage registration taxes.

A detailed breakdown of Free-versus-Founder-versus-Elite status benefits can be found at the official Tera website.

To coincide with the free-to-play business model switch for Tera, new in-game content will be made available. This includes a wave-based dungeon called the Crucible of Flame and a PvP battleground map called Champions' Skyring that "introduces a new way for players to test their skills against each other."

Tera is the latest MMO to drop its subscription fee, following Lord of the Rings Online, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, EverQuest II, Aion, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Bethesda has not said if its upcoming MMO The Elder Scrolls Online will carry a subscription fee, though consultant Nicholas Lovell believes the game will launch with a subscription before going free-to-play.

TERA is actually amazing

i never played it before and installed it couple days ago

and holy shit was i missing out , this game blows guild wars 2 combat system away , the combat is amazing i lvled my warrior to 25 and the battles i had with basilisks and naga mercenaries were the most fun i had in a LONG TIME

this game is worth playing , questing system is simple and u have the objectives nicely displayed on your map , no more searching for some quest items on the web its all there

the questing is all about killing stuff , and its fine because its the most fun part of the game anyway

also the open word pvp is great i havent seen this type of pvp since wow vanilla days or diablo2 , going hostile on questing ppl or just camping bridges with a friend or two is common thing to see (and actually very easy to avoid too u just switch the district if u dont want to fight , but than again why did u roll on pvp server in the 1st place if u dont expect to be ganked etc :) )

anyway this game is awesome and totally worth trying , i might just throw some money at them if they do the free to play model right - and it looks like they are doing it right (not limiting pvp for free to play users and boosting pve refresh rate for premiums)

just my 2 cents

One of the best MMO I've played yet. And has the best gameplay I've seen in a MMO yet

Auronvolgar
Auronvolgar

and that's the reason why i didnt start playing it :D because i know that it will become free to play ;) all those that end up purchased it, cry for your money losse :D

@Auronvolgar  Actually only the idiots will be crying. Since we spent money on the game we get founder status. That means all 8 char slots/ unlimited gold amount a special mount 3 months of elite. max bank and inv. AND we already have max level characters along with friends. So Imo it was money well spent. Anyhow ill be hunting down newbs in PVP so yea see you around XD

Same old churn and burn scam.

Release MMO with hype, sell the client to raise cash, charge a sub for a "sub-par" game as long as you can...then do what you intended to do in the first place and switch to F2P with item mall. Lay out some BS to shut up the suckers who adopted early, and enjoy the nice flood of initial cash before it dries up.

MMOs are like Groundhog day.

ChunkyDrawers

@vishisluv7 GW2 was all hype and no show. Boring and no endgame. TERAs still the funnest mmo until we see how all this new shit plays this year

Greyfeld
Greyfeld

@vishisluv7 And then watch all the idiots who claim that "Sub-based MMOs are dying!!" while simultaneously ignoring the fact that all the MMOs that have gone F2P did so because of at least one (if not several) major flaw(s) in their core design.

Napalm_354
Napalm_354

@Greyfeld @vishisluv7 thats cause they were never really designed to be f2p in the first place, unlike GW2. One way or another, they gotta get their cash flowing, and selling funky constumes in an online store can only get you so far.

@vishisluv7 F2P saved AION!!!! And then swiftly killed it shortly after, so yeah what you said.

Didn't even last a year. How predictable... in all seriousness why do people invest in these games? With the exception of Guild Wars NOTHING has ever beaten WoW sense its creation. So how the fuck do they feel like there game is special enough to kill it?

ThreeVo like.author.displayName 1 Like

@vault-boy First of all

why the "fuck" do you assume that every mmo that is released is interested in dethroning WoW.

and second... GW has NOT even accomplished this

@ABEzilla116  switching to other games is a normal do u think that a COD fan only play it they also play Halo and other FPS too. similarly the player who play SC2 also play LOL& Xcom, those who play Forza also play NFS& Dirt series so it is also normal if WoW players play other MMO's.

Daemoroth

@vault-boy The same reason publishers think that taking on Call of Duty and Battlefield 3 is a good idea...

They're suits, they're f**king stupid. They only think of stats, and if the stats say that 20 million people bought CoD, it must mean that if you release a FPS you will sell 20 million copies. That same thought process is applied to MMOs, WoW has 10+ million subs, so if we release the same thing then we must also get 10+ millions subs.

It's fascinating to watch it happen, but very sad to see the effect is has had on the gaming industry. Nobody wants to "go first" so everyone sits around copying everyone else waiting for "somebody" to do a new thing that works that they can all start copying as well.

PS - TERA is a lot of fun though, I enjoy the combat a lot, story about as interesting as every other MMO out there so nothing special in that regard. Glad to see if going FTP, so many games out there it's difficult to justify a sub if you're spending most of your time playing other games.

I'm not into a mmorph but tera I have been playing for awhile because part that i don't like about mmorph is that I don't like just clicking mouse and wait, not much of skill involves, but tera is I guess just like Tera claims" true action oriented rpg"..... Give it a shot!!!1 First of all it's free, and you don't need awesome cpu either, spec for the game is pretty low for the amazing graphic this game has.

tgwolf

Yeah...I mean, how long did you think you could keep charging for a product that goes free elsewhere, as in EVERYWHERE elsewhere...?

I hate mmo's.  The whole maketing and pricing strategy is so fucking lame.  Then there is the gameplay.  You reach endgame and then its just a damn treadmill.  You do the same shit, it turns into a fashion show, and people are fucking rude.  Not fun.  No thanks.

tgwolf
tgwolf

@moncealyo I prefer having things to do after all is said and done rather than just tossing my new and new-priced game in the garbage because I slammed it down in the epic-but-standard 10 hours or less...But I agree that the pricing was criminal and that it ruined the game, which otherwise was a great idea. But since so many have gone free to play, the pricing is not really an issue, even though the gameplay still suffers.

Will definitely give it a shot now! I'm just done paying monthly for MMOs. Too many good ones that don't have monthly.

@Matt6411 ...Yeah, well, in MOST CASES to now MOST mmo's have dropped their fees...

I played Tera a lot last year, pretty good game till they merged the servers...prolly gonna go back to it now it's free.

Hmm, I might try this one out.  Though I have not been into any new MMOs lately since I got bored of WoW.

nu1mlock
nu1mlock

@Xoxen101 Finally, someone who said they got bored of WoW. The game isn't even that good, it's mostly because people think they've invested too much money and time to stop playing (which is a stupid argument) and those that are "stuck" because their friends are (and their guild which might make a great community).

So thank you! There's still hope for MMO-gamers! :P

Xoxen101
Xoxen101

@nu1mlock I still talk to my guildies in vent, which in itself is a rarity.  I wil probably just switch to GW2 and Tera, or some other one if Tera does not intrigue me enough.
