President of Sony Worldwide Studios talks up the new PSP, discusses the PS3 press furore, and ponders the future of the PlayStation brand.
TOKYO--On the fourth floor of Sony's Japanese offices in the posh district of Minato-ku, the PlayStation 3 maker held a party Wednesday night to show off 30 of the PS3's upcoming games to an audience of international journalists.
The company remained tight-lipped about what to expect in tomorrow's Sony Computer Entertainment keynote address, which starts at 10:30 a.m. Tokyo time on Thursday (2:30 a.m. BST Thursday, 6:30 p.m. PDT Wednesday). However, speculation is widespread that SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai will use his presentation to unveil a rumble-enabled Dual Shock 3 for the PS3, amongst other announcements.
At tonight's event, though, the atmosphere was informal. Informal enough, in fact, for GameSpot to corner Sony Worldwide Studios president and World's number one MotorStorm fan Phil Harrison over a cold drink. He politely discussed the constant comparisons of the PS3 and Wii, and how Sony plans to move on from the negative press the company has attracted over its latest console's bumpy ride at retail.
GameSpot UK: So can you talk to us about what's going to be announced during Kaz Hirai's keynote tomorrow?
Phil Harrison: No. And I wouldn't remember anyway. [Laughs.]
GS UK: We keep seeing stories from Japan about the Wii outselling the PlayStation 3 here 3-to-1 or 5-to-1 or whatever. Does that worry you?
PH: I'm not worried about it, no. Obviously I would like it to be the other way round, but it's not really fair to compare two products that serve different markets and are at different price points. So, it's not something that concerns me when you look around at a place like this and see the depth and quality of talent in games we've got coming through, so I'm pretty happy, actually.
GS UK: So you think it's unfair that people keep comparing the Wii and the PS3 when the Wii is so much cheaper?
PH: Yes. I don't know what the analogy is. If I make an analogy I'll probably make an unreasonable analogy, so I won't bother.
GS UK: Let's talk about the new PlayStation Portable. Why was this launched this summer?
PH: Constant improvement and innovation in design is what drives us, so why wouldn't we pass on to the gamer the advantages we can have in terms of making something smaller and lighter. In a handheld device, something that is smaller and lighter is a pretty highly regarded feature, and people seem to like it, so I think it's cool. Have you actually held one?
GS UK: Yes.
PH: People at E3 were going, "Is there anything in this? Is this just a mock-up or is this the final one?" Yep, it's the real one.
GS UK: Nintendo's strategy right now seems to be to widen the gaming audience and bring more widely appealing things to the market like educational games, and even non-game software. Any plans to do something similar?
PH: Since you are UK-based, you will know how influential games like EyeToy and SingStar and Buzz are, not just [to] the PlayStation 2 format, but growing the market generally cross-category. So, we're continuing to work on those for the PlayStation 2, we're bringing them all to PlayStation 3 in new, networked, innovative ways, which you saw at [the Leipzig] Games Convention with SingStar on the PlayStation 3 and Buzz! TV--which is going to be phenomenal with the ability of user-generated content for quizzes.
GS UK: I've been wondering about that. What if someone puts the wrong answer in?
PH: Then there will be a way to complain about that and rank it lower, which will then push it down in the recommendation engine to a lower ranking. It's all about the community. And I think there's going to be a button where you can actually challenge an answer.
GS UK: For the PS3, would you say it makes more sense to you to just focus on the hardcore gaming market?
PH: I think if you look back at the history of our platforms, they will all follow very similar trends where your initial audience is very different to the audience you have buying into the console seven, eight, or nine years later. So, we try to make software which is slightly ahead of that trend, software that enables younger users or new users to come in. I think what characterises PlayStation 3 is there's actually more variety and [a] more diverse genre mix that's available on the PS3 earlier in the life cycle than we saw on PS2 or PSone. So I think we're pushing into new areas more quickly than we've done before.
GS UK: Peripherals seem to be increasingly important. Have you guys got any plans to make any innovative new peripherals for the PS3?
PH: We have a research and development group that looks at new human interface designs as part of our core group, so there's a few interesting things that are lying around--literally--but there's a lot of innovation that doesn't ever make it to retail shelves, because of either creative or commercial or other considerations, so we'll continue to invest in that, and hopefully something along the lines of Buzz! or Eye Toy will come along. But I have nothing to share with you today.
GS UK: There seem to have been quite a lot of negative PS3 stories and criticism of Sony in general in the media. How do you intend to get past this?
PH: I think you're surrounded by the answer to that question, which is a tremendous lineup of really great games. We'll let the games do the talking.
GS UK: Thanks for your time, and enjoy the party.
It's more fair to compare Sony with the 360 because they are competing for the same fanbase. Wii is excluded, it's not even fair to say better games are on ps3/360 vs. The Wii, since Launch the Wii has been just, different, and it's ignorant to make claims that Nintendo is gonna lose when they are pratically leading the pack. Nintendo is creating a Paradime Shift in gaming weather you like it or not, it won't stop people from playing Halo and playing Cooking Mama, but don't be suprised when future moms10 years from now are playing Wii 2 vs. Playstation Xtream or something like that. In the gaming industry it's not where we at now but where we are going. Always look on both sides fo the fence. I mean for now if you like the PS3 play it. don't worry about what Microsoft or Nintendo is doing, if you like Nintendogs, play it. If your a Halo nut, Play it till Master Chief says no more. Just enjoy what you got, because if you want a new game system your gonna buy it anyways.
"In a handheld device, something that is smaller and lighter is a pretty highly regarded feature, and people seem to like it..." O RLY?
Qoai_chang_kain, I agree partly with you. These companies would walk over your bleeding body in the street and not even bother to look down. They just don't care about the individual consumer. This guy practically said, Screw the people who initially buy the system because the makeup of fanbase will be different down the road. That's a pretty crappy way of looking at it, dismissing the hardcore gamers who waited online to get a PS3. N ever again! Even though I have all 3 consoles now, I feel the " games " are on the 360, and the PS3 provides occasional entertainment. Man. I hate Giant companies. My Uncle works for a big company, and his mindset just completely disturbs me and we get into arguments all the time. I would care about the little people, he does not, . . . I guess that's why he is filthy rich, and i am not.
personally im not loyale to any system, all i care about are games, that being said, at the momment the system that has more of the games i wanna play right now is the ps3, if the wii or the 360 get those games or games i think are better then i will get them. its dumb to take sides with a faceless company that doesnt really give 2 **** about you! (thats all 3 of them)
Nice interview. You can't deny there's a lot more new and cool franchises coming to the PS3. It may be expensive and take a little time to get going, but ultimately it has the games to show for it. Just look at the 2008 lineup, and many not even officially announced yet. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the Wii. Mario, Zelda, Metroid are cool, but that's not enough for hardcore gamers. Wii is too focused on sports, training and mini games. Even though it's selling like hotcakes, I have yet to see any strong 3rd party backing for it. To gamers it shouldn't matter who sells the most consoles, as long as it has compelling games and variety. Anyway, I'm just stating my observation.
to b fair this whole crap about who's gonna win this console war is aload of sh** neither console is goin to win the supposed war bull sh** ps3 has got a 10 year plan untill the next one cms out , 360 will b around for a few years still so sayin that just because one console dose'nt have good games (in ur opinion not mine) is stupid specially when people say a console is dead, all the consoles have sold loads i saw on a sight the other day wiis at 9million units, 360's at 8 million ,units an ps3 at 4 million unit, thats not bad when u think about it since in its 1st year it has sold as many units as the 360 did in its respective 1st year look it up . bottome line is u cant say a console has lost in its 1st year specially when its gonna b around for a long time simple as that.
Some of you people have no idea what you're talking about. Sony has great games coming and it has great games out already. I don't care what no one says, Resistance is a great game, especially for a launch title. Heavenly Sword is one of the best games I've ever played and it's not as short as they make it out to be plus it has great replayablity value. As to the games that are coming out, who can argue that Uncharted will be a great game or Haze and how about UT3, and that's just this year. Feb. 2 2008 Killzone 2 ( got mine preordered at Gamestop) then White Knight Story FFXIII and VS , MGS4 and so on and so forth. What the hell does MS have after Halo 3? Mass Effect and that's about it.
Sony has been saying wait and see for awhile. Phil obviously thinks they have a great lineup for 2007, but it really isn't. Sure they have a few solid titles like Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, GT5 Prologue, Hot Shots Golf 5 & Folklore on the way, but the reallly meaty titles like MGS4, DMC4, FFXIII, the real GT5, Killzone 2, Socom, etc.. won't see the light of day until next year. If Sony does what they are suppose to do, once 2009 gets here Sony should be on the road to success. I love my Wii & XBox 360, but I'm a true pure gamer and still want a PS3 as well.
(yaaawwwn) well...that was...uh...informative. That interview felt like Phil was at a bathroom stall and GS decided to waltz in and play 20 questions while Phil was trying to throw them out. That or it seems the folks at GS and Phil were bored to high heaven so the just decided to make a random interview.
That had to be the worst interview on GS ever hands down. I think I fell asleep half way through reading it.
i agree with bozanimal the ps2as so good but i really don't know how they got so hated in such a short time it was so sudden and the last answer was a bit bad. when he said we'll let the games do the talking i got reminded of lair (4.5) and heavenly sword (8.1)
It's really sad that Sony - a company with so many excellent engineers and products - is hampered by poor management, marketing, and press control.
gwds- motion sensing thats actucally worth a s***? i love the idea, but so far in practice its been less than stellar to say the least imo. lucky-coins- not sure if this is also linked to a ps3 board?but many commenting(including myself) are doing so in the news section.
"Innovation" is the key word. Anyone out there want to speculate on what will be some of the innovations for the future generation of consoles? It can't just be tighter graphics.
lol jsut reading the comments and again - as usual - loads of fanboys from both MS and Sony. the sony fanboys are saying look at the 360 didnt have any good games in it's first year either! and the 360 fans are going yes we did! truth is, how long has it taken for halo 3 to come out after the 360? two years. that is the truth right? im not making this up... we all know that gears of war was fun but come on that was like the only game i would have goten a 360 for.... and now the "most anticipated" game of all time - halo 3 - is coming out 2 years after the console - so everyone just stop bickering and look at the facts...
PH: I think you're surrounded by the answer to that question, which is a tremendous lineup of really great games. We'll let the games do the talking. What is this guy talking about? PS3 has worst lineup!
I have a Playstation 3 and a Xbox 360. BOTH are great systems. Wii will fall of the market after the phase runs out. People need to realize that games like halo 3 are no big deal. There are far better single and multiplayer games than it. Just look at call of duty 4. Microsoft has just tricked people with massive publicity to get people to feel that they have to buy Halo. It truly is a crappy game that is overrated. As for upcoming titles from Ps3 and 360 we will definetly see great ones to come. After the halo dust brushes over Microsoft will have to result in creating original ideas and stop stealing ps3 exclusives while ps3 will do what it does best and create the exclusives that go down in history. 360 is doing a great job. Ps3 just needs to get off its rough start and get its act together. Wii needs to be put six feet underground.
As I said before, that whole "Wait and See" thing was also going on back in the days of the Nintendo 64. Nintendo saw all the negative press the N64 was getting in 1997, and they made comments like "Wait and see! All the great games will be coming in 1998, and your Playstations will become pieces of scrap." We all know that's not quite how things worked out. I hope the PS3 proves me wrong, but I wouldn't be too quick to get my hopes up. For the record, one thing I think people fail to realize is that EVERY COMPETING SYSTEM HAS ITS SHARE OF GREAT GAMES. The GameCube, despite being more-or-less the underdog of the last generation, still had a lot of great games. The N64 had a lot of great games. And so on. I think this is why the whole "Wait and see" attitude doesn't work. Because, while you're stocking up on a lot of great games, so is your competition. Sony may have a lot of great games coming out in 2008. But, on the other hand, so do Nintendo and Microsoft. And, as I've also said before, it's more difficult to be wowed by a video game now than it was back in the days of, say, Donkey Kong Country since video game technology has improved at a considerably slower pace during the 2000's than it did during the 90's. Many games released as far back as 2000 hold up quite well even today. While most games released ten years before (1990) don't. At least in my opinion. An interesting trend I've noticed is that, when a once-dominant company falls, people are quick to give that company as much bad press as possible. Which probably ties into the whole "arrogance often leads to the downfall of once-dominant game developers" trend I've also noticed (being a fan of video games since Christmas, 1989).
Why is he talking about "all these great innovations" that never make it, they havn't got the guts to try something new, the only thing he can mention from the last ten years is eyetoy and that was completely wasted, it didn't even come close to getting the support it derserved. Its the one device Nintendo wish they had come up with, but they would have supported it. Theres nothing to say they will support the PS3 version of eyetoy any better.

the guys kinda right. the whole stupid comaprison of the wii and ps3 are just designed to **** the ps3 over cuz of some stupid juvinile psychology and then six years after they ****ed it over everyones gonna be like "aw man. maybe in hindsight i shouldn't have done that" cuz then it'll be just like microsoft versus apple. a **** little childlike game that's just a blantant smack in the face when you think about what could've happened if everyone was okay with competition. not many people know that with more competition there's more innovation and cheeper products, but when you screw everyone over trying to be all superior and "lets just be unreasonably, and ignorantly cruel to one system cuz i like the other" all you get is one choice. one. and that's it. or two, in the case of OS. cuz linux blows to game on. sure solitaire is grand... cuz you know. it kicks the ass of oblivion, or C & C 3, or Medieval two or stuff that sells like hotcakes hahaha. seriously. stupid. two different markets people. you can buy BOTH of the systems and be happy with them both! kinda like owning a pc and a ps3. or... a pc and a laptop. but you don't hear pc laptop wars do you? no. cuz they're obviously two different markets. i guess it has to be explained to people nowadays. to be hones tho. six axis SUCKS DICK. and eye toy and buzz look completely boring. the game line up isn't promising. neither is anything else tobe honest tho. cept maybe the 360's bioshock. i hate the 360 though... that's by bias.
mmmmmmmmmm..... Virtua Fighter 5 and Tekken 5 DR aren't awesome games in comparison to Doa4? Motostorm isn't fun? Resistance fall of man was a decent game. Ninja gaiden sigma for those who never played the xbox version for whatever reason, isn't considered to be an awesome game? Warhawk at this moment in time is not an addicting and awesome game? all that mess is a matter of opinion. to me, i'll take Tekken 5 DR over Doa 4 any day of the week simply because, I enjoy Tekken 5 DR more than i enjoy Doa. so if it's just exclusives, I can see where people come from with "Oh, Ps3 doesn't have many good exclusives." though i disagree. but i can see it because it's a matter of opinion. but to think that that the system right now doesn't have awesome games, which it does, multiplatform and exclusives. then you're just being ignorant.
You guys always forget that PC equals Microsoft equals xbox 360. you cant throw that in to say "NAH AHH NOTEXCLUSIVE" PC equal microsoft hence microsoft windows!!
when the 360 came out it had call of duty 2 and dead or alive 4 = awesome games....so yes it had games, just saying not hating. Im not a fanboy but most of the ps3 argument don't hold. Everyone used to say, give it a year, a year has passed and nothing has changed. So now people say, wait till 08. Ok everyone is. We'll see how it goes. I dont think that sony can catch up. They came in too late thinking they were gonna wipe the floor and it backfired. I do plan on getting a ps3 when its price is way lower.
lol wtf.. Do I smell epic fail from your comments quanloco? First of all you don't speak the truth by expressing your own opinion as fact. Second, caps lock makes you sound like a douchebag. Third how the hell did you find your way on a PS board? If you admire 360 that much better go on 360 boards and s*ck some more M$ balls. Anyone uneducated here find your damn mirror already. Perhaps there are PS fanboys.. however this is a PS board, and you are a M$ fan, just why did you come here for again?
WHY oh WHY is on every PS/anything page I go to there is Xbox/pcbox lossers voiceing their SONY sucks etc opionions? Are they so scared their PC in a box is going to be outsold they have to tell everyone else their system is better? Shut up and go play GOW etc. and let PS users put in their opionions. I dont go over and tell you how the PCbox sucks? You like it better fine use it.
For your personal info quanloco... I'm not a fanboy nor will I ever be all I'm saying is that ,you can't judge console on it's initial year
TOOTERGRAY THATS FINE BE IMMATURE AND CALL ME NAMES LIKE DOUCHE BAG THATS COOL YOUR PARENTS MUST BE PROUD OF YOU AND TAUGHT YOU ALOT TO TALK LIKE THAT. I HOPE YOU DID'NT PAY FOR YOUR EDUCATION THAT TAUGHT YOU TO SAY THINGS LIKE THAT.
quanloco...this is what lower cased letters look like...why don't you turn off the caps lock and go to the xbox page, and you must be a supreme douche to have sold a total of 5 PS3 systems to other people making money for yourself. Why don't you get a life you and go back to the xbox page and stop voicing your opinion when clearly you are a closet World of Warcraft loser.
OK FANBOY WHATS NOT TRUE ABOUT WHAT I SAID IM NOT $ucking MS B@ll$ AS YOUR UNEDUCATED SELF IS SAYING IM SPEAKING THE TRUTH LIKE I SAID THE NUMBERS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. I WILL OWN A PS3 AGAIN IF AND WHEN IT BECOMES WORTHY. JUST TO LET YOU KNOW IF YOU FANBOYS DON'T THINK I EVER OWNED A PS3 JUST LOOK UP MY EBAY SELLER ACCOUNT (QUAN007) I SOLD 4 LAST HOLIDAY SEASON AND JUST SOLD MY PERSONAL ONE ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO BEFORE THE PRICE DROP.
for everyone that keeps talking about how the ps3 has only been out for a year, and comparing to the 360 in its first year..... "the great ps3 games are coming" you're forgetting something.... the 360 had no next-gen competetion, and therefore no one to "steal its thunder" like the ps3 has in the 360 and wii. there's little incentive to make games for the ps3 because there are 2 other choices out there to develop for.both of which have much larger installed bases and are easier to develop for to begin with. so until sony can work a miracle, the ps3 will continue to get late and/or second rate ports....with an occasional 1st party exclusive. ....ntm anyone who thinks that the problems with developing for the ps3 are simply because its so young are dellusional.sony systems are notoriously hard to dev for,and its quite the opposite for the 360. so the 360 had a headstart,no comp, was more dev friendly to begin with, and now has the dominate market share creating incentive for 3rd parties. thats not a recipe for gaining market share for sony. not trying to hate either, just seems to be the way things are. ive planned on getting a ps3 from the start, but with the state of things i kept putting it off longer and longer....at this point i dont know if i'll ever get one.almost definately not within the next year at this rate...... maybe by next holiday season they can change my mind.... not this one. :(
Psst... quanloco... your caps lock key is on. Just thought you'd like to know so you don't humiliate yourself...
LOOK ALL YOU SONY FANBOYS CAN SIT THERE AND SAY THAT THE 360 DIDNT HAVE THAT GREAT OF GAMES WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT BLAH BLAH BLAH WELL SAY WHAT YOU WILL BUT THE 360 FOR 2 YRS NOW HAVE MAINTAIN A 6.3 AVERAGE GAMES SOLD PER CONSOLE AND AN AVERAGE OF 3.5 ACCESSORIES PER CONSOLE. SOFTWARE SALES ARE THE MOST INPORTANT AND SONY AND NINTENDO CAN'T COMPETE WITH THOSE NUMBERS THE PS2 DID'NT EVEN HAVE THOSE SALES FIGURES WITH ITS GAMES SO CRY FANBOYS CRY. DEVELOPERS SEE THE TREND AND MAKE GAMES FOR THE SYSTEM THAT SELLS THE MOST. THE FACT IS XBOX GAMERS ARE MORE HARD CORE AND BUY MORE GAMES THE NUMBERS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.
when the xbox360 came out ,did they have good games? same goes for the ps3.... my point is every console has their problem on the initial years of release it's what they do to improve the service that matters the most... at the end, the consumer will be the overall winner
Generic Interview. Not learning anything new and and dishing out the pre meditated press answers. Meh.
SalarianChemist: Source for your supposed Next-Gen game comparison please? Much more impressive? I just checked all the games that came out the 1st year of launch for the Xbox360 and only found 3 games so far that had 9.0 or over. The rest were average at best. Compared to the 360 1st year, the PS3 isn't doing so badly itself. Gamespot gave Heavenly Sword an 8, so what? Is your point about mixed reviews being bad or just the PS3 games themselves? For me, Ridge Racer died a long time ago. It's now Forza or Gran Turismo. I will admit that the Xbox360 version looks better, but who really is gonna notice? To the average gamer, both will look almost exactly the same unless they're looking real close for the details. People are getting mad because they have to play against other people when they're playing Warhawk? That's funny. Let me ask you this. Do most people on Halo play against a computer when they're playing online? Enough said. PS3 owners will have a lot more to look forward to by the time Ninja Gaiden is released. Games Metal Gear Solid 4, Haze, UT 3 and Uncharted come to mind. As it stands now, the PS3 is hurting but losing one generation doesn't count the PS3 out. Lack of rumble can be fixed. Same thing with online features. Most of the games you mention are graphically better on the Xbox360, but only slightly so. Will the average gamer notice? Probably not like I said before.
