Parisian museum to replace traditional audio guides with 3DS consoles next year.

The world's most visited art museum has taken a step toward a more tech-savvy future with a plan to gradually replace traditional audio guides with Nintendo 3DS consoles.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) is reporting that starting March 2012, the Louvre museum in Paris will begin using 5,000 of Nintendo's stereoscopic handhelds--supplied by the publisher--to guide some of its 8.5 million annual visitors through the roughly 35,000 art objects housed in the museum's vast palace.

According to the AFP, the partnership with Nintendo comes as part of a new strategy to ramp up digital incentives. Agnes Alfandari, the Louvre's head of multimedia, told the AFP that Nintendo developed the content for the consoles, with the museum remaining in editorial control of the program.

The museum consoles will reportedly allow visitors to locate themselves within the museum's grounds, choose themed itineraries tailored to adults or children, and listen to recorded commentaries about the works on display in seven languages.

According to the AFP, the Louvre believes the 3DS scheme will appeal to both console gamers and those comfortable using a touch screen. The museum is reportedly also planning smartphone and iPad applications that will allow visitors to preplan their visits.

Wait.. As cool as this is, how are they preventing folks from just walking away with the 3DS? I know the thing will have obviously been modified to only be a guide and nothing more, but unless it's tethered to a mighty long piece of string I can see some kids attempting to steal this one! I visited the Louvre last year, and as amazing as the place is there's no real 'security' barriers, just one big ass queue and then some desks to buy your tickets. I can see this guided tour thing costing an arm and a leg :?

Great move by both Nintendo and the Louvres. I go there almost every year, and the traditional headset isn't quite cutting it. The 3DS, if used with some imagination, can provide very helpful background info to the visitor. Looking forward to using this next year!

It's crazy how my parents wanted me to go to a museum with a whole bunch of nude paintings and such but did not let me see porn. I mean, seriously, what's the difference of the two? Not to say that porn is child friendly or anything.

That's cool. I wonder if there is a special firmware just for this so people cannot do other things with them. That would be something to deter theft.

very smart, portables can do way more than just games, it's about time people started realizing all of their potential.

I think all the museums should do this. And they should make it so you can bring your own.Imagine all those 3DS's and Vita's in one place, trading and streaming data.Think how many more people would go.And the more fun museums, the hands on ones, the Science and Industry ones,Smithsonian, those would all be a blast.I guess they'd need one robust wi-fi connection.

Wow.Way to take dusty old museum filled with really old paintings into the 21st century! Curator:"Some video game machines oughta get some kids in here!" Seriously though, that's pretty awesome. It's about time things started becoming like old movies envisioned for the future, where everyone has some personal device or devices they can use to access all kind of things virtually anywhere, and we're getting really close with smartphones, tabs, and game machines.I'm glad I live in this century and not back in colonial times.

Do that in the US (Smithsonian and its gaming history display, anyone?), make it a game you can purchase ($10 sounds good, $20 would be far more likely), in the gift shop to tour the museum even outside of the museum, and I'll buy it. Just because...

Amazing! The museums in Washington DC need to do this to.
