The War Z servers attacked by hackers

Infamous online game was temporarily forced offline.

Controversial zombie survival game The War Z has found itself a victim of multiple hacking attempts over the last few days. Speaking on the game's official forums, community manager Kewk detailed the various attempts at disrupting the game: "Guys over the last few days we have been under attack by various forums [sic] of malicious attempts to shut down our servers."

"First we were hit with an attack that would rest [sic] our DNS IP so that you could not connect. This was solved a couple days ago early in the morning but took time to actually resolve world wide once the fix went in."

A couple of days later the game found itself "being hit, again, with a DDoS attack on our login server. We are implementing additional DDoS protection and hope to have this resolved asap. Unfortunately with these types of attacks it is very difficult to give a good time frame of when it will be resolved."

Kewk also detailed the various attempts at resolving the problems, with some successes for developer Hammerpoint Interactive. Right now it seems like the issues have been mostly fixed, though users trying to play from the now-removed Steam version still appear to be running into issues.

Last week, The War Z creator Sergey Titov apologised for the game's misleading launch and subsequent Steam delisting, saying that he "became arrogant and blinded by the early success and quick growth" of the game.

double post: This is for all the gamers that are complaining about their hacked accounts:

The customers that bought and played this game are f*ck*ng idiots before anything, because they bought a game that shouldn't be on Market, a poor copy of a MOD, a stolen idea, a rushed development to steal the uninformed gamers ! If some suspicious black market guy comes to you and offers you to open a digital bank account, would you put your Money in there????? YOU are the only ones to blame, the gamers that trusted on a thieve ! You all got what you deserved! Next time, put some thinking before throwing your money and personal data into some minor developer server ! Sony was hacked and they had tons of money to make things right... now go after the War Z devs and ask them to mitigate the situation like Sony did, hahahahahaha, they can't even track these guys !

There are gamers that don't even buy certain games due to moral values or loyalty to the series, for example, I heard many gamers didn't buy DMC because of the original Dante, there are some players saying they won't buy MGS5 without the original voice..... those are only examples, but WHY everyone was there to buy War Z even though all the controversy ? Now reap what you sow.....

I put my money into Minecraft, another minor developer, and they did splendid. War Z had the same concept and I knew what I was getting into: an alpha of a game. It was still growing, still being developed, and we'd be there as they'd develop it.

The problem is the constant hacking, and the fact that Hammerpoint has to keep refocusing their efforts to putting these attacks down. It's not the only problem, Hammerpoint is slow too, and they're greedy. They covered stuff up instead of closing it down for a week and fixing the problem.

But don't blame the gamers. We bought the games because we put our trust into the developer. It's the developer to blame if the game cannot deliver.

You ask me to clear my head, but read what you wrote again, I'll break down in parts for you:

If not, your argument here just shows to me that you have the bad habit of putting your money in the wrong places before hearing good reviews, and you got lucky this time !

Second: "I knew what I was getting into" .....If you knew, why can't you assume your mistake ?

Third: "But don't blame the gamers. We bought the games because we put our trust into the developer" ..... If I were to follow your thought,I would say that putting my trust into something will always mean I'm completely right about my decision ? Don't you see that after all the controversy and News that came up before War Z release were sufficient facts to put in doubt any credibility regarding that developer ? I don't think I could be more clearer than that, because I don't burn my money in suspicious things ! So I think there are many people getting rich very easily due to the stupidity of clueless consumers !

Well, all I can say is clearly they didn't really do a lot of thinking about War Z and just jumped on the bandwagon and tried to slap it together with duct tape as quick as they could so they could make some fast cash. I don't imagine that the servers for the game will be up for long. They'd have been better served if they'd made some sort of singleplayer zombie apocalypse survival experience with random spawning human npcs that'd be either friendly or hostile etc.

I saw the game's review on ign and, it's just embarrassing.The weapons are useless, bugs and glitches are all over the place, the graphics look uninspiringly bland, you never can tell who is a friendly and who is a hostile human, hackers run rampant all over the place, and the only way to buy weapons is to play for dozens of hours, or just pay to get credits. Only problem is, after you buy the weapons and you die, YOU LOSE ALL OF YOUR WEAPONS AND HAVE TO GET IT ALL OVER AGAIN! That is what you call a ripoff.

The Walking Dead and RE6 is more zombie compared to this shit, and a lot better too. Yes, I just said Re6, one of the best games of 2012 that thankfully didnt win any awards since Capcom up to this point deserves none but its a shame that its unfairly reviewed and considered bad because its "all action no horror" by Activision ass kissers that gives Black Ops 2 great scores even though that's the game that deserves to be called "all action", which is in itself a very invalid complaint that is just bullshit since there are still horror in there in Leons campaign and a bit on the others too, like Re4 with that regenerator bit, and Re6 is a lot better than 5 and Black Ops 2. Minimum score this game should get is 5.5, not a stupid 4.5 or 3. I find nothing in this game that resembles a 4.5 or 3 in terms of gameplay and content. this score is for pathethic cash ins like Warfighter, 007 Legends and Operation Raccoon City. Okay Enough ranting. Thankfully I didn't buy war z, the defence this Sergey guy put to this game on his gamespy interview is ridiculous. Karmic retribution I say.

 @Kaz32 I really-really disagree, RE6 was the worst RE so far. The fact that you compare it to black ops 2 - a fps SHOOTER for god's sake - says it all: RE died the day it became a shooter. No mystery, no horror, no puzzles - just money-making action. Zombies that cover and shoot with machine guns (oh god why). It really makes me sad that people defend this absolutely worthless game - come on man, if you like shooters you have plenty of them - resi was never about action...

So what? That's the perfect comparison. What does Black Ops 2 offer besides multiple endings and the new strategy mode compared to the other call of duty games before? It's all the same old shit. Not really. Re6 does have horror and it does bring back the atmosphere of the old Resident Evil in Leons campaign. Couple of times I was jumping off my seat on Leon's chapter and that part with the Ustanak on the cave... Like did you play the game at all?? If you ignore the other campaigns and just play Leon's, or just treat Leon's as Re with the other campaigns an alternative good fun of Resident Evil, wouldn't it become the game that goes back to the old atmosphere and is loyal to its fanbase? It has zombies, relentless dogs chasing your neck, some puzzle solving, this monster type that looks like a regenerator that cant die that's just extremely creepy, and this scene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JumfStx9XGg I bet you haven't even played the game yet. Leon's campaign is 10 hours total. Chris and Jake are 5 hours, each are capable of being its own game. It's a great deal. And like I said, you people complain that Re6 is not horror anymore because "it's all action, no puzzle, no misery" or whatever. First off all, that's not a real reason why it's bad. That's the same thing as saying "John Cena Sucks because he's not a heel anymore" or "Hitman Absolution sucks because the stages are small now". It's just retarded. Second of all, that's only true if somehow Resident Evil abandons all notions of survival horror and zombies and just give you an fps call of duty game with the same gameplay. Operation Raccoon City is the case where the changes to action is obvious and where the gameplay is broken. Why not complain about that game that ruins everything? Thirdly, I'm a resident evil fan myself and has been playing all of the games, including gun survivor and dead aim, and I get that Re has changed. If I want to play the old games again, I will do so. I played 1 2 and 3 again, finishing them all and you know what? the scares arent as they use to be anymore. I know every jump scares and position and puzzles that its just a fun action game now. I go along with it, I accept the fact that Re has become more action and I know that they can still put horror in the game and have fun with it, why can't you?

 @yearssomuch Because it came out almost at the same time and it's the perfect parallel. These are blockbuster games that came out in 2012. I'm comparing it because it is the truth: Black Ops 2 got excellent reviews by a bunch of ass kissers even though it's just the same old crap as the ones before with only some changes, while RE6 got panned because "it doesn't feel like the old RE anymore so it sucks". The irony is baffling.

 

Isn't the real fanboy here the ones who said "this doesn't feel like the old RE anymore so it sucks" and the ones that panned the game in the first place because "it doesn't fell like the old RE anymore" like yourself? Helloo? Even then the arguments you fanboys make are so stupid. It's not all action with no horror, there's still puzzles and jump scares expected from the old RE trilogy, and it's all in Leon's campaign that is 10 hours.

 

Though I am relieved that it doesn't sell well. Capcom at this point needs to change their shady stupid dlc practices and bring back Megaman. Problem is, RE6 is actually a good game. Raccoon City is the one that should be bombarded with hate.

 @Nexozable I tried to enjoy DayZ, however i encountered many axes which i could not pick up. Buildings that cannot be entered, and when i was running from a zombie, i jumped a fence only to have the zombie glitch right through with no-clip and continue it's pursuit.

 

DayZ in it's current form has less content and more bugs than WarZ.

No-one has seen DayZ's standalone version, despite it the devs saying it was going to be out by the end of 2012.

Massive multiplayer online games are persistent worlds with "thousands" of players existing on one server. EVE Online has one single server that is a home to 100,000+ players and at any given time consistently have 5,000-21,000+ online playing on that "single" server. World of Warcraft servers peaks around 1500 players on at a single time per day.

 

War Z has one large scale map(not world) on multiple servers allowing under 100 players to play. There's nothing massive at all about it. The Secret World is the only real MMORPG in the horror genre.

  game" are not a genre... its a fully established "theme" sure...but not genre... For exaple, Day/WarZ are both MMO "Survival" games with a zombie theme...

I think this was a good way to send a message to The War Z Devs basically showing how little the devs gave a shit about protection and just wanted a cash-in title.

 

I say good on the hackers, show em that they need to actually put effort into creating a game.
