Hope they're keep the original voice actor for Garrett. He was perfect. The cutscene videos are also some of the most stylish and vivid I remember out of any game. The problem with deadly shadows is it just wasn't fluid in its characters movements and environments. Thief 1, 2 and gold are still the champs. Moss, water, fire, rope arrows - gotta miss those. Can do without the zombies however though this series is known for a bit of a creepy streak.

What we heard: When Eidos Montreal announced that it was working on Deus Ex 3 in November 2007, many fans of the thought-dead sci-fi series rejoiced. Five months later, the same studio sparked rumors that it was working on a new version of Thief, another classic franchise created by now-defunct Looking Glass Studios and continued by the later-closed Ion Storm.
Now, one year after Eidos Montreal declared that its "AAA project" would begin with the letter "T," the soon-to-be-Japanese-owned British publisher's French-Canadian shop has posted a new teaser banner for the game. On the lower-left of its official site, the studio posted a small black-and-white notice that promises "Eidos Montreal's second project to be revealed soon."
Though no further details--such as a date--are available, the info vacuum was filled by a theory reminscent of The Onion column Fontly Speaking. One diehard fan on the dieharder Through the Looking Glass forums noticed that the font used in the teaser banner (center) is very similar to that used in previous Thief games (bottom).
The official story: Eidos reps have not responded to requests for comment.
Bogus or not bogus?: Though the font is a tenuous link at best, the not-so-subtle hints that the remake-happy Quebecois studio has dropped aren't exactly Garrett-level stealthy. Throw in the fact that Eidos' new corporate master Square Enix name-checked Thief as one of "the world's leading video game properties," and a fourth Thief is looking not bogus.
If this is true about Deus Ex and Thief, and add to that the re-make of Syndicate by EA, maybe, just maybe, gaming companies are at last waking up to looking at the history of great games instead of the future of crap games, like so many gamers have said over the years about so many past games: 'it would be so cool if they re-made.......'!!!!
If this rumor is true, let's hope that stick to what Thief does best time around. While the main appeal of the Thief series is stealth combat, the games (particularly 2 and 3) have been burdened by unnecessary action levels that play against the games' strengths. Deus Ex 2 was mildly disappointing after the masterpiece that was the first game, but the story was extremely intriguing and thought provoking. (I particularly liked that the choices you made for the different endings didn't necessarily lead to the consequences that you expected.) I am eager to hear more about Deus Ex 3.
Ok, guys. Why don't you do domain lookup whois and find out who's registered owner of thief4.com? Will tell you a secret, it's Eidos, so I guess no doubts here. It was registered in December 2008, so this is pretty fresh one. Guys might be working on the site design right now - it's down yet, so enjoy :) Whois Search Results Domain Name Domain Name : thief4.com Registrant: Eidos Plc Domain Administrator Wimbledon Bridge House 1 Hartfield Road London, SW19 3RU GB Email: Registrar Name....: CORPORATE DOMAINS, INC. Although I'm not a big fan of the series, I like it and am looking forward to a new game in the series. I just wonder what platforms it will be released for.
I can see an amazing future for Eidos, even if all there games are all bought solely on the fact that past games were good. BUT, if they succeed in making 2 amazing games with the Deus Ex and Thief series, then greatness can only follow. I don't think an AAA title developer has ever not created more AAA games following.
Never really played the Thief games but i do like the hitman series. I don't want to compare Thief to Hitman but it's obvious there are certain elements in both games that could attract the same kind of people.
I love the thief series and i look forward to playing another one. Hopefully they can get round the ending of thief 3 and hopefully make the levels much more complex, rich and larger then the ones in deadly shadows.
@ fallenangel-155 Dude have you Played a Theif game? That writing is Spot on Theif style. My sister is a Hardcore theif fan and when she comes back home im going to show her this article and i whana know what she thinks of the teaser.
I'm not so sure about this, Thief is fine as it is. A sequel could potentially ruin the series' reputation.
Hmm didn't know that Eidos had an office in Montreal. Well I seriously hope they won't screw it or I'll go throw a brick in their window.
I'm just hoping they go with the same sort of middle ages time period. I heard rumors a while back that they were going to make a modern day Thief. While this would be cool as a separate (non-Thief series) game, I hope they stick with the Medieval feel for the rest of the Thief series. Sort of just an updated version of what they had before, with better graphics, new quests, and fewer bugs. Regardless, I'm excited!
Great news. Hoping that both Thief and Deus EX will be blessed with sequels worthy of their predecessors. I'm a big fan of both games, and can't wait for official confirmation and release dates. Way to go Square Enix.
Cool! I hope Square treats this amazing series well, and keeps true to its spirit. And hopefully doesn't make the main character some pretty-boy bishonen :P
another thief? sweet!!!!^_^ I think the main character will be a girl. anyone who beat the third one will know what i''m talking about.
@grognard : is not only "is one of the..." bro' is THE FIRST STEALTH ACTION RPG and that puts it first in my book. I can hardly wait. Hope is not a flop like most of the rushed games the industry is producing this days.
Great news indeed for any fans of the series. As a huge fan of the series myself, the thought of a possible new Thief game has got me excited. It's also nice to see all the positive comments out there which shows just how many fans really enjoyed the series. I always new you guys had good tastes.
Such news shouldn't be rumored. What's the point? If the game is in development and expected to be released, we'll hear of it eventually. If not, well, we won't. And if rumors are spreading, gaming blogs such as GameSpot should not spread it even further.
I really hope this is news about Thief 4. A brilliant series that is long overdue for a 4th game. Coming from Ubi Montreal, I'm guessing there will be significant cross-over with their other similarish title Assassin's Creed, but hopefully Thief 4 will really go for a much more stealthy approach than AC
thief 4 would be awesome. Thief 1 and 2 are classics where as thief 3 was just meh except for it containing perhaps the scariest level ever (anyone that played it knows what I'm talking about). If this is legitimate it will be a purchase for sure so long as they keep the oddly "creepy" atmosphere that has plagued the past games.
The Thief series are some of my all time favourite games. I will be well please to play a fourth, provided the developer remains true to the series. If they make something different, but still excellent, then that is also good. If they make something that is the same but sucky, or worse yet, different and sucky, then I will be thoroughly disappointed.
ooo... I have to play Thief Deadly Shadows to 'catch up'. It will be interesting to see how French Canadain developer will make out of the next thief.
PLease, Please, PLEase!!!!! I love the Thief series, they were all great!!! I want a new one! NOW! Best stealth game ever!
A Thief 4 sounds very interesting. I hope it does the series justice. I find it interesting/sad how the Thief title is like a poison-pill for studios. First Looking Glass went under after making it, then Ion. I guess in a sense you can say Eidos kind of ceased to be as well after working on the title.
