California-based publisher files application with United States Patent & Trademark Office for "video game software."
Publisher THQ has made it clear it plans to evolve its business, but it appears to be making a game of it as well.
On February 22, THQ filed a trademark application with the United States Patent & Trademark Office for "Evolve." The mark is to be used for "video game software."
No further information regarding the trademark application is available, and a THQ representative told GameSpot, "Sorry, no, we don't comment on filings."
THQ has had a troubled year. It lost $56 million during the 2011 holiday quarter and cut as many as 240 jobs as part of its move away from the children's game sector. On top of that, THQ has until July 23 to get its stock valuation above $1 per share or it will face delisting from American stock market Nasdaq.
I've really enjoyed many THQ games. Saints Row is a great franchise that shows they are willing to mix things up and experiment. I loved Saints Row 2's over-the-top (crazy) fun and comedy compared to GTA4's slow-paced (and sorry but imo boring) story. Darksiders was an awesome hack n' slash game with great pacing, action, bosses and diversity. Metro2033 is a brilliant (horror) FPS with elements of HL mixed with some stealth; worth checking out for any fan of single player FPSs - they didn't bother with forcing in multiplayer like many other publishers would have. We also have UFC fanbase covered with UFC3. ALL those games got a 'great' rated review of 8/10 here on GS. Sadly many gamers only try 9+/10 games or big franchises (and then wonder why we have COD being released every year). DOW2 Retribution is one of the most impressive expansions I've ever played. For fellow gamers like myself who love to play all genres and enjoy a larger range of titles to choose from, let's hope THQ can recover, and of course for the industry and their employees.
Why do so many seem to think THQ publishes bad games? I mean, there IS the occasional bad game, but they put out good stuff all the time, and recently just pared down their focus to their best stuff.
Evolve is already taken.. https://www.evolvehq.com/
Hopefully THQ can "Evolve" into a better company. See what I did there? *GS community throws tomatoes*
I cant make heads or tails of the current THQ direction. Is it good being that they allow for alot of DLC for their products? Or is it they are milking what they can without a care to the gamer? Either way, I think I am developing an anti THQ mindset.
