Tony Hawk rides again
Activision pitchman's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD to compile selected levels from original two THPS games for release on downloadable platforms.
Activision gave the Tony Hawk franchise a year off after the series lost steam at retailers, but the Hawkman is apparently ready to take flight once more.
According to a Joystiq report from the Video Game Awards in Los Angeles tonight, Hawk confirmed for the blog that Activision is working on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD. As the name suggests, the game will be a revamped version of old Tony Hawk content for release on high-definition platforms. In this case, the game is said to compile "select" levels from the first two Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games, including School and Downhill. Hawk added that the game is set for release on "digital platforms" in the first half of 2012.
The most recent Tony Hawk game--last year's Tony Hawk: Shred--was developed by independent studio Robomodo and sold under 3,000 units in its first week. It was the second game, following Tony Hawk: Ride, to use a motion-sensing skateboarding peripheral. While Activision hadn't committed to a new game in the series for 2012, company executives had said they still see potential in the franchise, likening Hawk's staying power to that of NBA great Michael Jordan, who played his last professional game in 2003 but was the cover athlete for NBA 2K11 and one of several for this year's NBA 2K12.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD is expected to receive an official announcement at the Spike Video Game Awards tonight. The VGAs will be broadcast live tonight on Spike TV and MTV2, beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern, 5 p.m. Pacific.
[UPDATE]: In the VGA pre-show, Tony Hawk confirmed that the game will be released on downloadable platforms for under $20 and said Activision was aiming for a summer release.
Tony Hawk just seemed to get more and more unrealistic and then Skate came along with it's rewarding, realistic trick system and killed TH off for me. They would have to reinvent the series to make me buy a new game. The early games where the best though and the chance to play these levels again with improved visuals may just tempt me to part with a small amount of cash. I should add that I do Skate in real life so a bit of realism appeals to me.
I'm in no rush to play another Hawk game any time soon thanks Activision; you already railslid it into the ground and you should let it rest a while longer. I'll stick with hoping SSX's return from hiatus will keep my boarding habits happy for now.
I bought Skate and it made me realise a) that TH games were nothing more than rhythm sensing combo button mashing games, and b) that I suck at skateboarding. I'd still pick up the latest Skate if I saw it on special though, cant say the same about TH. I dunno what proper skateboarders think though...
i like ssx hd collection
@penpusher I agree that Tony Hawk games 'died' off years ago (just look at "Downhill Jam"). But that doesn't mean we cant give Acivision a chance to redeem themselves and tickle our nostalgia a bit.
That reminds me...so when is Skate 4 coming out:)
Selected levels meaning half of them and the other half as DLC?
I hope they make a new one that uses the ps3 controller and not some stupid skateboard controller who wants to stand up and play when you have a nice chair to kick back in and have fun. I hate the way this gen seems to keep trying to push motion controller or motion detecting on everyone its stupid.
Please Activision: 1. Old formula (tony halk 1, 2, 3 and 4, for ps1) 2. Realistic graphics 3. Good soundtrack, including old songs, from th 1, 2, 3, 4 and thug2 4. Lots of missions 5. Online competition, but like old-days (who makes more points, who paints more, who gets to the end of the level first) then it will be awesome
oh come on, we are not in the PS1 era,,,tony hawks games died off a long time ago
the board peripheral killed the series no one wanted to pay an extra £60 for something that would only be used by a couple games
I skate like it's my job, and let me say this it's nice to have an arcady skateboarding game. They just need to forget about the peripheral crap.
@The-Neon-Seal Amen to SSX. Can't wait for 2012.
And expect half of those platforms not to run the game for s*%$.
Im sorry was this Tony Hawk or Chuck Norris?
I think SSX is enough said for which boarding game I will be getting next. Not been a decent SSX game since 3 and I'm glad their returning to the old formula as ont tour was rubbish. As for the hawk man? I personally loved THUG, to have that re-released would be such a nostalgia trip.
As long as it has controls like the older games and NOT the goofy frickin board controller bullcrap. I loved the series since the first game but at that point, I dropped out. Sorry guys. Not gonna pay for a giant controller and then be forced to play standing up especially since I have always enjoyed playing the TH games for hours at a time...
THPS2 with the original soundtrack and I'm good. Forget everything else.
My username....nuff said. Love the Tony Hawk games, I loved THUG, THUG 2 and Wasteland, kinda got dissipointed with the more recent ones but this one should be awesome.
as long as goldfinger-superman is in the soundtrack this will prolly be one of the best DL titles ever as long as it sticks to the old formula closely. oh yeah i've met John and Kelly from Goldfinger :P
This is amazing! I love the Tony Hawk series, I grew up playing these games on PS1. It's a shame that after Underground 2 the series went downhill. I also like the EA Skate series, but Tony Hawk has a special place in my heart :)
THUG was the best tony hawk game out there. Of course I still love the classic first 3.
Only the first 2? I hope they include the 3rd.
I think this will be a good comeback for Tony Hawk games, going back to their roots. Its been really tough not having a real Tony Hawk game since 2007. That being said though, Skate didnt kill Tony Hawk, actually Skate kind of died off after three games, Tony Hawk went strong for at least 5 before people started getting tired of it a bit....that also being said, Skate 1 and 2 were awesome
yes, i have been waiting for something like this for a while..
So here I am, Doing everything I can. Holding on to what I am! Pretending I'm a superman.

the first 3 games were amazing, THPS3 is probably still my fav
Tony Hawk games were awesome back in the days.
wow they still want to make tony hawk games?
I don't believe that THPS CAN'T make a come back. However, I don't see it as likely.
No more TH plz. This planet will rejoice!

God I hate you TH. Skate destroyed you. It's over. Let your series just die with some digni... oh wait, that chance was shattered as soon as you started e-begging for people to play TH Ride.
Okay I wonder how they improved the game this time.
Hell yes!
@ABakedAlien He's getting older too, or did you also mean his behavior?
although THPS 1 and 2 were easily the most entertaining skateboarding games of all time, you have to admit THUG was also one of the best games that reinvented the context of a skateboarding game. If they were to also remake it, I would def. buy it :)
Did anyone else think Tony Hawk looked messed up on crack or something at the Spike VGA awards?
@driftingsilvia - then why do they make racing and flying simulators? why are games like madden and fifa realistic then? i get theres a fanbase for over the top games (i like nba street/jam and nfl blitz) im simply stating my opinion that i prefer the more realistic approach and play of skate over the lets see how many grind variations i can do on 1 rail as a alien or spiderman in thps
Skate 3 FTW ;P
This game is gonna rule. The Tony Hawk games have needed to get back to their roots. A new SSX and a new old-school Tony Hawk. My 2012 is made already. Now if I could just get Aggressive Inline 2.
Hawk is a wash up, as is the series. Activision simply cannot STAND to have a franchise, no matter how bad, sit idle.
I miss those days. Playing Tony Hawk games, trying to learn to skate. Then they kinda trashed the genre, and I became too busy to learn to skate. Just don't bleed poor Tony dry this time.
Wouldn't it be for the best to let the once great series rest in peace?
@Yo-Gan agreed. I love those two minute runs. I hate the tutorials you get from talking to people although I am ok with that, I noticed that the cutscenes got longer and more uninteresting with each newer TH game.
Also go back to the 2 minute runs with the objectives, none of this going around and talking to people to get missions crap!
This is awesome news! It would be sweet if they included some (in a perfect world it would be all!) of the levels of Tony Hawks 3 as well.
@chillychill- Rodney Mullen is two years older than Tony Hawk.
If there is no Park Creator then its blows.
