Runic Games' dungeon crawler hits new sales milestone across Xbox 360, Mac, and PC; sequel slated for arrival this September or October.
Runic Games' Diablo-esque dungeon crawler Torchlight was released on the PC in October 2009 and earned a strong critical reception. Today, its developer made known just how commercially successful the game has been, announcing that Torchlight has gone platinum.
Runic Games sent word today that Torchlight has sold over 1 million units across all platforms, which includes the Xbox 360, PC, and Mac. The developer did not offer a platform breakdown of sales.
Runic Games is currently crafting a sequel to Torchlight. Torchlight II was originally expected to arrive this spring, but development of the XBLA iteration of the original (which launched in March) pushed Torchlight II's release window to this September or October.
Formed in 2008 by veterans of the now-defunct Hellgate: London outfit Flagship Studios, Runic Games includes a number of employees from Blizzard North, which created the original Diablo franchise.

@Areyal Sweet, it's kinda sad that they haven't released this in the PSN. I have it on STEAM though ;)
@TonnFool23 By using X, Y, B for the first 3 technics, then you hold the right trigger button wich will allow you to use again the same buttons for 3 differents actions. The A is use to bash normally.
I had a hard time reading the stats of items and stuff in the inventory, too small and kinda awkward. I'd also rather have equipment customized in town to suite my needs than enchanted randomly.
Does this include Steam sales? Because it just went on sale on Steam so I can imagine that would be a big boost.
Notice that this game never released on PS3. The developer wanted to release on platforms where the users actually buy games and aren't hell bent on only purchasing exclusives written to hide the inferiority of the paulty ps3.
I just want to see the sequel on XBLA. Multiplayer will certainly make this already fun game even more fun.
@JunglemanchiId alright, bad choice of words for me , when i said mainstream i meant casual and not hardcore , Diablo is hardcore , Torchlight is casual.
And still no one received that extra content promised with the release of the XBLA port.i think it was send enough respec potions and we would get something but we got nothing
I'm pretty sure Steam helped out, I know a bunch of my friends and family members picked it up, it was too cheap to pass up. Great game, just wish it had Co-op.
i really hope to see torchlight II on xbox aswell, and would love for it to sell even more then the first, anything to make blizzard take a closer look at a diablo III release for consoles
@zidan4000 - lol, a game selling well makes it mainstream which doesn't make it a bad game automatically. I think the COD series is bad and it sells well but I think Mass Effect is excellent and that also sells well. To think Diablo isnt a mainstream game is strange though, its sold millions and millions of copies and still continues to sell years and years after release :\
First they worked at Blizzard and resigned, then they started Flagship Studios which went bankrupt, then they started Runic Games. It's nice to know that when a company dies, it doesn't take its employers with them. They can just form a new company and then it's business as usual. Torchlight is the best Diablo clone I've played, but I miss certain things in it that makes me want to play Diablo 2 again. I wonder if Tochlight 2 will give me that same sensation. I'm pretty sure Diablo 3 won't do that.
Been thinking of picking this up for a while. I guess summer is a good time because of the gaming dry spell until Sept.
I would love to see the numbers they would have sold if their was co-op in it. I love this game and have actually bought it for the PC, Steam and Xbox and really enjoy it, but I am really looking forward to the online co-op of 2.
had they included co-op it would be 2 million. i was pretty dissappointed that co-op was left out. why?
I've been playing it since release, and I'm more than a little ashamed to say I only actually bought it during this last sale. Still, it's definitely good news to hear. One of my favorite Action RPG games of the last decade.
Well, Torchlight sold 750.000 copies till august 2010. So I guess the XBLA version was not successful as the PC version.
@TonnFool23 : It's actually pretty easy to play it with a controller. They made a good job with the transition.
Bought it on XBLA month ago for my daddy who just love these kind of games. And as edant79 said, was only 2,99 on steam this week... well I bought it twice.^^
@monson21502 TROLL FAIL!!! Before it was released on the 360 the game was announced to have sold 500000 units.
I bought it off Steam for like $2.99 and been having a blast. I'm definitely getting the sequel day one.
Great stuff. I finally picked this up yesterday after holding out for a Steam sale for months. It's pretty awesome. It will keep my hack-and-slash ARPG hunger down until Path of Exile opens up.
Bah guys why not release it at the end of july..Why oct or november even...Ill still buy it dont get me wrong..Just think july wouldve been a better fit for you guys...Wouldve sold more.. Cant go wrong with torchlight being bigger and better now..Looks like diablo 2 back in the day..Open ended terrain world..Three acts of good old torchlight..Also we have more classes this time around..Would you believe we get a pirate also now how cool is that..They never did show the other classes before they signed off im sure there mage types..
Just when you thought you were one of the few out there that still cared about hack-n-slash loot crawls! I got 2 copies myself, one right away and then the XBLA one so I can hack from the couch! It's been a good year for those of us who love this genre and we still have a few more to look forward to playing, both from major players and small studios. My ultimate selfish dungeon crawl dream is to have a Champions of Norrath III, but who still plays that type of archaic game? To sell it needs to be a fancy online motion controlled 3D FPS with a bad Michael Bay complex right? I got a million strong that say you're wrong.
I helped w/ 2 of those: 1 PC, and 1 XBLA! I'm so proud. If anyone is interested, Torchlight is on sale on XBLA for 800pts, and it is definitely worth picking up for that price, if you haven't yet.
Time flies. Apparently we'll hear about Torchlight 4 selling 5 mil before we ever hear of a Diablo 3 release date!
