Welcome to the world of business. Constant regulation, paperwork and never ending obligations and rules that any company no matter how small has to follow, >>> OSHA regulations, taxes, filling regulations, savings plan regulations, medication fillings etc etc etc. Most people are usually on the I don't have to deal with that stuff (employee side) so they have no idea about it but now they are coming for you. All these power yielding regulators are at the doorstep. Beware and I kinda have to chuckle.
Runic Games joins Epic Games and Riot Games in openly denouncing controversial Stop Online Piracy Act.
The list of gaming companies that are against the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is growing. Today, Torchlight developer Runic Games went on record stating it joins Epic Games and Riot Games in standing against SOPA, as well as the Protect IP Act (PIPA).
Writing on its official forums, Runic Games said, "It is clear that the scope of the proposed legislation would give unnecessarily broad power to large corporations while reducing the rights of individual citizens--and it won't even stop software piracy. We at Runic Games oppose the SOPA/PIPA legislation and we encourage you to do the same."
Not all gaming entities are against SOPA. The Entertainment Software Association--the game industry's representative body--has pledged its support for SOPA. According to the ESA, the game industry requires effective protection against the illegal acquisition of games and those who facilitate it.
Companies that support the bill--including the National Football League and GameSpot parent company CBS--argue that it offers necessary protection to content creators. Opponents of the bill, such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, argue that SOPA infringes upon First Amendment rights and will ultimately deprive the Internet of non-infringing content.
Next they'll be saying that they can stop death - all you'll need to do is sign your soul over to them.
Weeelllll... guess I'll be buying the next Torchlight afterall... Edit: and this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFkEULhLPwY&feature=related . I didn't like Anonymous before, but now, well, the enemy of my enemy is my friend
I'm watching the list and it looks like no actual human is for that legislation. Only the system of corporations which is fascist in its core.
@VenkmanPHD Like I said, Gamespot ALREADY did deliver the information in its original editorial on SOPA. All these news bytes are updates. SOPA has been in the works for months now. I think if you want to make an informed decision, you don't wait for information to come to you, you go out and get it. Gamespot already posted the link. In fact, the link I posted is one I got DIRECTLY from the original Gamespot article.
@renegade_magnum It's not about googling it. The whole point of "News" is to bring information TO people. Yes I agree, not looking it up would be stupid, but that being said 9 out of 10 Americans are oblivious morons, which is why this is a problem in the first place.
"It is clear that the scope of the proposed legislation would give unnecessarily broad power to large corporations while reducing the rights of individual citizens--and it won't even stop software piracy." I love this statement! Clear, concise, and most importantly, correct.
Comment blocked by SOPA- User sued for plagerism, libel, and harrasment for speaking out against someone elses ideas, products, and/or services.
More gaming companies need to oppose this bill. I know it's tough to start involving your company in politics such as this, but when it directly affects the products you put out, you need to stand up for what is right. Down with SOPA!!
Looking at the list of supporters....that's a lot of money on that list! This bill is def getting passed.
List of Supporters SOPA: .... International Association of Fire Fighters ... and some more which don't related to Internet at all. WFT?! Mb now difficult physics problems can be done by janitor?
Always read between the lines and use your own intellect rather than believing the official story. Every Industry on this planet Is effected by the hidden string pullers. The official story Is often a lie to disguise the real agenda. Sadly the real agenda Is often working against the Interests of ordinary good people.
if i was a game developer id be VERY worried about this bill..... Sales WILL NOT CHANGE WITH OR WITHOUT PIRACY. Thats a fact. Piracy is at an all time high in the last 10 years BUT the gaming industry's sales are also the highest they have EVER EVER been by billions of dollars, in the history of game production. SO how do you work that out? Highest piracy rate ever, Highest sales rate EVER. umm.. how do you work that out? SOPA is a joke and the person that thought it was a good idea, needs to be shot.
@VenkmanPHD Or, if you're really too lazy to look it up: http://judiciary.house.gov/hearings/pdf/112%20HR%203261.pdf And just so you know, Gamespot ALREADY DID put up, in your own words "a (expletive deleted) link to the bill itself so your readers can make an informed decision" in its editorial regarding SOPA.
@VenkmanPHD NDAA buddy, look it up. They've already taken away our rights. Now they want to take away even more. Secondly, the bill is readily available online. It doesn't take a lot of effort to google the darn thing. While you're at it, google NDAA as well. Read it, and understand it. You're living your 9-5 American life completely and utterly ignorant of the laws that have ALREADY been passed that already allow the government to hold US citizens without trial and indefinitely. Are you going to sit by and live your 9-5 American life completely ignorant of the laws that will also stifle free speech as well? I hope I don't come across as insulting, but the reason why you live your life oblivious to all this is probably because you don't take the time to care. Fact is the government already has the right to deprive you of your freedom without due process, and now they're doing it to your free speech as well.
@SrsGamer I know the point you're trying to make, but obviously you haven't looked at torrent sites very hard. Starcraft 2 has been pirated, WoW has even been pirated (and runs on private servers). Diablo 3 WILL be pirated, I can almost guarantee you. Usually the phrase "where there's a will there's a way" applies to pirating, because there are quite a few out there who have insatiable will's to prove their cracking skills. Also, this bill has almost nothing to do with most gaming companies (granted I'm sure there are a few that would support it). It is almost entirely a governmental action so that piracy of ANY kind will stop (ie. music, tv, movies, any software). This isn't strictly a gaming related bill. Also, incase you hadn't noticed, game development companies have been trying to push anti-pirating software to make their games "un-piratable".... This doesn't go over very well and usually alienates most of the fanbase (Ubisoft and PC customers ring any bells?) It's mostly the government and big corporations in ALL industries that are pushing for this bill. It's bs and it has to stop (and I don't even live in the US).
Hmm... well, its practically impossible to pirate modern Blizzard games, why don't the companies just try harder and come up with a way to make their games un-piratable? And i'm not only referring to WoW, as far as i know you can't pirate starcraft 2 either and the same will go for diablo 3.
@VenkmanPHD 1st AMENDMENT FREEDOM OF SPEECH ? The Patriot Act broadly expands the official definition of terrorism, so that many domestic groups that engage in nonviolent civil disobedience could very well find themselves labeled as terrorists. ? The Government may now prosecute librarians or keepers of any other records if they reveal that the government requested information on their clients or members in the course of an investigation. It has become a crime for these individuals to try to safeguard your privacy or to tell you that you are under investigation. 1st AMENDMENT FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION ? Government agents may now monitor the First Amendmentprotected activities of religious and political institutions, and then infiltrate these groups with no suspicion of criminal activity. This is a return to domestic spying on law-abiding religious and political groups. ? You may now be the subject of a government investigation simply because of the political, activist, or advocacy groups you are involved in, or the statements you make within these groups. 1st AMENDMENT RIGHT TO ACCESS GOVERNMENT INFORMATION ? The Government has conducted immigration hearings in secret behind closed doors. Such proceedings were once open to the public. Hundreds, if not thousands, of immigrants have already been deported in secret.
For the people hating on the anti Sopa commentors ..they have every right to.. this Bill would single handedly take away all first amendment right allowed on the internet. Every site based in the U.S. would be affected Youtube, Facebook, Google.. etc .. so if you think you can avoid it by not living in america ..your dead wrong. To be For Sopa is to be Against everything you enjoy today without interruption. its not just about gaming piracy ..if it was it wouldn't get this much hate. dont believe me? research yourself.
@djwood84 I'm not saying your wrong, but exactly what rights is it we have already lost? Last I checked I'm still able to live my 9-5 american life, the exact same way I've always lived it.
Gee, well that sure is interesting Gamespot. You know what would be great though... If you put a (expletive deleted) link to the bill itself so your readers can make an informed decision. Anyone else find it interesting that only OPPOSERS of bills like this try to show you the actual information? I'd almost bet $ this comment is censored or removed too.
@freedomvendingi what is the point of "artwork" if no one can see(?) and apprecate it. I am assuming you are talking about visual art? all the digital artists I know give their artwork away for free. anything else would be crazy. They charge for actual phycisl peaices. you should really check out somebody like rob sheridan. you can down load all his stuff. make it you wall paper. print it out and make it your toilet paper if you want. but if you want an actual print, or a number photo. you have to pay. its the digital age. nothing is protected anymore. you dont want people to steal then dont put it on the internet. what if I painted a picutre and it was put up in a museam. is no one allowed to take a photo it?
Damn, I am following Torchlight 2 and saw and update. I was like, hell yeah a release date!!!!111 Then I read this. :(
This bill isn't bad its just written so broadly it allows company's to sue over non infringements. Protect the right of content creators yes but dont give company's such a broad ability to sue everyone and everything they want to.
On behalf of the digital community, THANK YOU! We have to oppose these kinds of things. Every right they take away from us is always in the same of stopping illegal activity, but more and more often its just about taking away our rights. We just lost most of our real-life rights to the American Defense Appropriation Act, now they want our digital lives too.
Looks like the studio's are picking sides, now that one has went on the record the others are doing the same :). SOPA isnt worth the paper its printed on....not even worthy toilet paper
@Kingjames11 Why would I care though, because I have multiple people I can vote for that can represent my individual views at the capitol. Your country has only two possible choices, and your not voting for a specific person for your specific area that you live in, but your voting for one guy (perhaps girl), that will represent you. You don't have much of a choice in the matter. And, unless you are completely blind, you would realize that the democrats generally want to help the average US citizen, while republicans want to give tax breaks to big corporations. Doesn't sound like republicans care very much for the little person, which is probably over 90% of the population. Now, just to prove my point, check the average grades of the red states and compare them to the blue states. Yeah, that's right. You just lost the game.
@bramterris Yes, because people who vote Democrat are so much more intelligent. The fact that you claim one party is better than the other shows your clear lack of understanding of what the two party system really is and how it really works.
@allanpaas Brainless they are definitely not. It's the people that support them who are Brainless (fox news, people who vote republican).
You download and try it, you don't like it you delete it. You like it very much, you buy it. You buy it, without trying first, and you hate it. Well, you can't get your money back... Piracy IS a good thing. It keeps companies that produce crap from getting the money they do NOT deserve. If a company has a history of producing good stuff, then trying the game first (through piracy) won't even be necessary. So, hey! Big stupid companies who still don't get it. Poop out quality stuff, if it takes 5 years or more to do just that then so be it! That way you reduce piracy because people will know the game is worth the money! And STOP milking! What is the point of hoarding money? There is none! Why so? Because money (or anything else) you don't need nor use is WORTHLESS! Well, now you know. Brainless greedy idiots... (honestly now, they are)
@DespVand It's the only drug that is healthy in reality... but not much people know about it coz of the propaganda... which has begun in late 1960's. :) It can cure cancer.
"It is clear that the scope of the proposed legislation would give unnecessarily broad power to large corporations while reducing the rights of individual citizens--and it won't even stop software piracy. We at Runic Games oppose the SOPA/PIPA legislation and we encourage you to do the same." IM WITH THEM!
@freedomvendingi you must be clinically insane to actually think SOPA could stop people from pirating you artwork. SOPA doesn't protect the little people, it protects corporations, and in a way that hurts everyone else.
@freedomvendingi why don't you go live in N.Korea then? No internet for your "artwork" to be stolen from... besides they don't steal artwork from artists like you and me they pirate video games and movies... so they essentially pirate the corporation's money and because people from all over the world can watch -even illegal- those movies and play the video games artists like you and me have a better chance at getting a larger audience... I could be wrong but this is what I believe, and even if it is wrong this bill is still illegal in it self because it is unconstitutional and you don't burn the whole forest to get rid of the weeds... because -metaphorically- there is less oxygen and green afterwards...
@FanboyslayerPS there is one way -theoretically (very big theory)- to end both "wars" legalize both of them (drugs and piracy) EU has already in most countries legalized the lesser drugs like marijuana...
is it real opposition or is it "we oppose publicly so that we don't lose consumers, and we endorse through back channels and lobbies"?!?!?!
