Well Tribes AA was fun as hell on the PS2, so I wouldn't necessarily say that Tribes CAN'T work well on a console.
Global Agenda dev Hi-Rez Studios resurrecting Dynamix's heralded multiplayer shooter franchise for downloadable platforms in late 2011.
Prior to being shut down by IAC late last year, InstantAction (aka GarageGames) sold off the rights to its highest-profile gaming franchise, Tribes, to Global Agenda creator Hi-Rez Studios. And as could be expected, Hi-Rez intends to put that IP to use, announcing today at PAX East that it plans to bring Tribes: Ascend to the PC and Xbox 360 during the latter part of this year.
Hi-Rez is crafting Tribes: Ascend as a successor to Tribes 2, which received wide acclaim upon its release for the PC in 2001. The game will make use of Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 middleware--not GarageGames' Torque engine--and Hi-Rez hopes to maintain the game's signature gameplay of fast-paced online shooter action that emphasizes teamwork and strategy.
The original Starsiege Tribes from Dynamix was named one of GameSpot's Greatest Games of All Time, thanks in large part to innovative online features. Dynamix officially shuttered in 2001 after the release of Tribes 2, though Sierra Entertainment released two more installments in the franchise: 2002's Tribes Aerial Assault (PS2) and 2004's Tribes: Vengeance (PC).
Hi-Rez plans to release Tribes: Ascend as a downloadable offering. The studio also said that the game will serve as a precursor to Tribes Universe, which Hi-Rez described as a "massive-scale, persistent world shooter."
The first teaser trailer for Tribes: Ascend can be found below.
ohh god... TRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIBEEEEEEES ! YES PLEASE ! But god dont make it multiplatform, especially xbla ! Its Tribes you are talking about not a mindless COD Game!
OH MY GOD! HEART ATTACK. I remeber playing the demo of tribes 2 like 7 years of go good stuff. TRIBES 2 the construction mod was the best. I love the community of the Tribes series. Tribes 2 isn't dead yet. Check out Tribesnext!
Ho Yes! ima going get a Tribes tattoo rite now diamond sword and starwolf logo YEAH! BTW Startsiege Tribes is still working we have servers whit 20/30's come and have fun and live the legend... just download t1 patch 1.11 or 1.30 and get the new master's server :)) MeTaL here
Frankly, I don't see how you could make this a console game without really mucking up how Tribes play. Tribes has always been about leading your shots, such as with the disc gun, I forgot what it was called, and that would be very hard with a controller. That's why aim bots where not that useful in Tribes except for the minigun. One thing really good about Tribes was the really high skill level involved in properly using your jetpack while aiming. I just don't see that transferring well on to console. I'd rather see a game like Sony Stations Infantry on console. That game I think would do well, since some of the player base already used game pads. Also, why didn't Vengeance do well? It was a fun Tribes game, the only difference was the vehicles, and the smaller maps from what I remember.
I played the heck out of the original Starsiege: Tribes and Tribes 2, but wasn't as impressed by the more recent incarnations. While I can't wait to see Tribes return, I do hope that they go back to the original Tribes gameplay. I'm not holding my breath though, seeing as how this is being developed as a multiplatform title.
if this comes out and is good i think bungie valve and activision are going to nned to step up and reclaim there spots that would require some thing with deferent game play mechanics from bungie im glad they stopped milking halo but they need to change simply a new title from activison they can only milk cod so much longer half life 3 and counter strike 2 from valve but if this game isn't good then there is no hope for online shooters
tribes WAS a great multiplayer game that time... im curious how this one will be... but why is it coming on the xbox and not the ps3? there you at least can play online for free...
WOOHOOOW - well that's an announcement trailer!!! can't wait, played Tribes Vengence and loved it a lot - waiting to see what this one will deliever
http://www.tribesnext.com/ Free Tribes2 legally!!!! Everyone play this rocking game while we wait :D
@Megavideogamer Tribes 2 Arial Assault far surpased almost everything even Halo3 and reach brought to the FPS scene and it did it in 2001.... If only that game had maintained its server browser :
@Megavideogamer "Halo killer?" Tribes came out WAY before Halo bro. You also played it on console.. which is the wrong way to go about experiencing the franchise. I like Halo and all, but it doesn't compare to the multiplayer of Tribes. Not only is Tribes' multiplayer awesome, but there's also nothing else remotely like it even to this day.
I played the original Tribes on the Playstation 2. It was good but wasn't the Halo killer that the caption on the case proclaimed. Even Monita liked it. So this is a worthy download.
@RobbySpry The good old spinfusor. If you can't shoot someone out of mid air with that you never played Tribes. someone standing a thousand yards out or better so you can't see them only there red triangle you shoot the spinfusor at the perfect distance under the point of the triangle and get the kill, well that's just awesome. If you didn't spend an 1/8 of the game in the comand screen watching for someone to go past your motion detectors you never played tribes. If someone stole the flag and was have way home and you didn't know where to launch you mortar shell to kill him you never played tribes. If you haven't perfected the shock lance you have never played tribes. I have played tribes and don't plan on ever playing it again unless they do something really special with it. Tribes was revolutionary back in the day and deserved 1000 hours of your time, life.
@NoX5 What are you on? Tribes is widely known as one of the best multiplayer franchises in FPS history up there with Quake and UT. Go back to your CoD garbage. Anyway, I just hope they don't screw this up.
Another Unreal-powered Tribes sequel. This time developed by the makers of an online shooter that I don't hear much praise for. Best of luck to Hi-Rez that this gets a better reception than Tribes: Vengeance.
LLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLL THE MULTIPLAYER LEGEND!!!! I just shat myself laughin!!!! rofl. This game is in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM a multiplayer legend. This game was a multiplayer FLOP!!! lol what a joke
ouch...i feel my childhood die a bit more each time another tribes sequel comes out. Each iteratation after Starseige: Tribes was an utter abomination.
Oh **** Yes!!!! Is it just me or are people not as excited as I think they should be. Do you know what game/franchise this is? This is ****** TRIBES!!!!!!!!!! TRIBES!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!! SHAZBOT!!!! This is big news people!! Who cares if it's XBLA or retail it's ******** TRIBES!!!!!!! Did you hear me? About ******* time!!!! Yes!!!!!
Made by the developer of Global Agenda.... Hmm, do not really like the sound of that. Here's to hoping it turns out decent though !
@RobbySpry The number of people playing Tribes 2 right now is more in the hundreds or so, but usually 50 to 80 people playing at a time (though it is far more active recently due to a tournament). And yes, it's very hard for a new player to get into it; in fact, I'd say a majority of the people who play the game right now never even learned how to play at an effective level. If Tribes is going to be great again, it must find a way to keep its immense skill curve that sets it apart, while teaching new players how to play and eventually get up to an effective level. Most FPS players nowadays have major OCD and don't stick with one game for long, so I don't have much faith in it. However, I've seen people who stuck with Tribes 2 for a year in the tribesnext era become great at the game, so it's hard to say for sure. To pull such a thing off, they have to at least "try" to make a good game, unlike the people behind Tribes: Vengeance. It just seems like the series has always been cursed to fail.
Sweeeeet!!! I remember playing the first tribe game and having a blast over 10 years ago, long before Halo and battlefield, it was really ahead of its time. I hope they recapture the spirit of the classic.
@RobbySpry: "This will fail like Vengeance unless they make the game-play a lot tighter and with smaller levels." This is exactly why Vengeance failed. Tribes was great because of the large scale, complexity, and options available to get the job done. You could do anything from mortaring a base with 2-3 heavies to soften up defenses to suicide bombing their generator room on a small vehicle with a scout armed with satchel charges. If these guys give players options the way they did pre-vengeance, the community may come back to this IP. I know I will.
Interesting. I actually stopped playing the first Tribes a few months ago after years of playing, such an addictive game. These people need only one winning formula and that is to copy the Tribes 1 source code exactly as is, and only change the graphics. Best fps ever made.
@VincentLegato Fusion Mortar fired from a scout flier with a cloaked team mate providing targets with the targeting laser. Sweet, sweet sneaky destruction.
@RobbySpry -_- Scrub and PuG are not british terms, nor am I a bloody pommy. -_- Scrubs: Bad players. Can consist of both casual and hardcore gamers. PuG: Pick up groups, often unorganized, almost always lacking in tactical capacity. The reason Vengeance failed was a simple combo of two problem, over simplification of the multilayer and a great many many bugs. As for team communities, there's a whole lot of them out there, and by no means to they need to have more than 100 people. Any community of gamers who play together on a regular basis competitively qualifies; be their registry as few as 20 or as high as the thousands.
"I think today's gamers simply don't enjoy putting as much effort into winning and rely on others so much as you have to in Tribes. " Yeah... that's why the Battlefield franchise has been such a failure lately... wait... "It's like trying to shoot flies with a frisbie." My favorite weapon in the game was the Frisbie launcher...
@Fernin-Ker I presume scrubs and pugs is British slang, but it somehow feels like you are referring to "casual" gamers, who probably counts for about 95% of the gaming populace. So again, i think this will fail like Vengeance unless they make the game more about fun and less about work. And what do you mean "decent team-communities"? Can you show me an example of such a community that would rather choose a Tribes game over for example a Battlefield game? There's plenty of teamwork to be had that doesn't take using jetpacks for a minute to pass by an enemy or two.
@poordude1089 Ah bloody men to that! Sweet sweet jet pack chaos and yells of SHAZBOT! here I come! 8D
This will fail like Vengeance unless they make the game-play a lot tighter and with smaller levels. I think today's gamers simply don't enjoy putting as much effort into winning and rely on others so much as you have to in Tribes. It's a lot a work involved in getting good at any role in this game and even then it's difficult and uncertain if your skills will last because of the environments simply being enormous while the weapons are much too difficult to hit anything with. It's like trying to hit flies with a frisbie.
