Twitch reveals $9/month premium membership

Streaming video company unveils ad-free "Twitch Turbo" premium offering.

The next era of Twitch has arrived. The streaming video company today announced Twitch Turbo, a $9/month premium subscription option that gives members a range of benefits, including ad-free broadcasts.

In addition to uninterrupted viewing, Twitch Tubo members will receive an exclusive Turbo badge, only given to paying members. On top of that, premium subscribers will get a custom emoticon set, expanded chat colors, and priority customer support.

Twitch said the above-listed Turbo benefits are "just the beginning" of what the company hopes to offer through the premium service. The company said it wants to hear from users regarding what they would like to see added in the future.

Those interested in subscribing to Twitch Turbo can do so today beginning at 9 a.m. PDT through the company website. Twitch support for Call of Duty: Black Ops II was added last week.

Since the chat is the first thing I'm hiding when actually watching a stream on Twitch from time to time and the other features seem to be worthless gimmicks, I'd rather put Twitch back on my ad-blocker list if the ads get too annoying and would personally get just about the same value out of it without paying for some "premium service". (which still has caching problems because I'm in the EU and their datacenter is in the US)

Don't they realize what they're saying? If video games are that bad, then what about alcohol, drugs, tv shows, movies, books? When compared to video games, those are "more evil". Alcohol and drugs can take away proper thinking, tv shows and movies have been showing more brutal stuff (rape, more gore) than commercial games, books have been around far longer than any of these and they hold instructions on how to treat people badly if they are not part of your religion or group.

At least in video games, every time you're tasked to kill something, you're usually killing bad guys to save the world.

I'm getting really tired of this new trend of everyone on the internet going "give us money for nothing to support us". If you think your content is worth paying for then put a paywall on it and stop with this half-begging/exploiting peoples good will so you can maximize your profit.

I watch Twitch occasionally but I'd never pay for it. I can stand the ads to watch someone else play a game, but paying to watch another person play is not my cup of tea. I'll pay for someone else to get an all expenses paid trip to Disney land if they bring back a picture of them having fun...

@---Cipher--- Well , I can't  go to some of the big video game tournaments. So it is nice to watch them online . Evo , MLG Starcraft , etc.  Some of the twitch users get access to some of big games 24-48 hours earlier.  So working overnights , it makes my day go by faster watching them play.

@sladakrobot Yes part of the reason my Xbox will be meeting Ebay very shortly, useless device next to PS & PC, fine for those without and like paying to use their internet connection which is already paid for :O

@SteamyPotatoes So,on which boat are you? :)

@SteamyPotatoes  If i am correct, there are over 40 millions XBL-"gold"-subscribers so MS thinks they doing the right thing. As long as it is like that,I see no change in that formula so soon...unfortunatelly.

SteamyPotatoes

@sladakrobot @SteamyPotatoes Guess the side that feels Xbox Live should be ad driven for non gold members, but allow users to get online with their games , Don't mind paying for twitch to support the casters but not all that into it at the moment so it's entirely optional.

"Watch games. Not Ads."

LOL dont you love how they make it look like "It comes with the territory! Much like hurricanes, or HIV!" when they are the ones delivering the ads. I dont care how much you love Twitch, that is bullshit. Like when the mafioso comes into your store looking for protection money, yet hes the one who just broke your window. "Im willing to stop getting free money as long as you keep paying me. Deal?" It would be extortion if it didnt sound so retarded. Yea im sure you get other things too......that could also be free. Colors! A badge made in Illustrator! Smileys! And you get to talk to nerds on salary before anyone else. Fantastic. Give me a 10 and at least ill swing you a dime bag of some dank...

I watch Twitch more than TV.  $9 a month is pocket change.  I will support them.

I wonder the same thing every time I see an article on Gamespot about competitive gaming.

@deth420 The streams are entertainment, people don't mind paying for entertainment.  Be it watch sports, comedy, movies or entertaining people playing games.

Hmm, waiting for sites to start charging  micro transaction fee's to post in the comments sections :p

$9 a month for that?  Maybe $2 (considering they have had $0 up until now) for a true fan, everyone else can ad block and or deal with a few ads.

Sorry, Twitch, I need my dough to actually buy games, not watch people play them.

I have Twitch streams on 24/7 but I get the feeling my support would be better going directly to my favourite caster's subscriptions.

No thanks. There are so few streams worth watching, and AdBlock takes care of the ads just fine. When I can get Netflix for $8/mo, $9/mo to watch people play games and have a custom chat flair is way more than I'm willing to pay.

@lolomgwtfbbq but but, you get expanded chat colors, they are actually going to let you use your computer graphics chip. Yes the one you paid for. You have to pay rent to access it's colors, you know that right?
