After passing on Harmonix collaboration last year, Irish quartet is now open to band-centric rhythm game a la The Beatles: Rock Band.
With the explosive growth of the rhythm genre in recent years, there are only a few hugely popular bands remaining on the sidelines. One of those holdouts, the long-standing Irish quartet U2, may finally be ready to get into the game.
U2 bassist Adam Clayton told USA Today that the band was in talks to lend its songs and likenesses to the game last year, but never reached a deal.
"We definitely would like to be in there, but we felt some of the compromises weren't what we wanted," Clayton told the paper. "That could change. I love the idea that that's where people are getting music, and we'd love to be in that world. We'll figure something out."
That doesn't necessarily mean gamers should hold their breath waiting for The Joshua Tree as a downloadable album for Rock Band and Rock Band 2. Clayton's comments suggest the band would prefer a stand-alone product dedicated to their music, much like last month's The Beatles: Rock Band.
"What The Beatles have done, where the animation is much more representative of them, is what we're interested in, rather than the one-size-fits-all animation," Clayton said. "We didn't want to be caricatured."
The Beatles: Rock Band is the only game in the Rock Band series to date to use musicians' likenesses. However, next month's Lego Rock Band will feature squat yellow toy versions of Iggy Pop and David Bowie.
Ok its me again... FREAKING GOD!!!!!!!! I'm DYING OUT THERE!!!!! When is this god damn game gonna be out???? U2 is the best band ever you hear me??? It deserves its own game!!! If i were a millionaire, i would finance a video game studio to produce it!!! Boring people.
Ohh god.. its been like nearly 3 months now... please please please Harmonix give us some more details of U2 rock band, because i CAN"T WAIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sounds like an awesome idea, can't wait to drum on Sunday Bloody Sunday, or sing I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For!
We're not going to sell out... kids need to be playing real instramen... wait, how much can we make off this? Oh, U2 and Rock Band, hell ya.
I would like to see more Band oriented GH and RB games, tired of downloading so much that its clogging up my hard drive. I want something harder though, I want a GH Slipknot, with so many band members it would be a blast to see and a challenge to program.
noooo! if it's just a stupid cash in (if it wasn't then they would have done it before) then don't do it. WORST. IDEA. EVER.
Hmm. I do really love U2, and I do kinda like Rock Band, but not enough for me to buy it. But I would really like playing U2 on Rock band. Who knows.
Just last weekend I saw U2 in North Carolina...and before that on the second day in Chicago. Both shows where mind blowing, far beyond anything I could expect. On the day I went to Chicago I wore a Rock Band shirt, hoping that they would see it and consider having their own game. Maybe they did see it...either way, I know 80,000+50,000 people that will buy it day one...
STOP DOING THIS. DO NOT RUIN ANY MORE BANDS. U2 is awesome but this game is not a good idea. Also, those GH/RB song fretters really need to get lives. It will not be a long time till there's actually EVERY SINGLE SONG in the WORLD playable in those games. Slow down a little bit, please. Game franchises like this make me lose respect to the video game industry.
loved RB 1 thought RB2 was great RB Beatles MEH GH is surpassing them now... especially with that drum design but i'll keep to my drummania =] dunno if U2 will save the franchise
Hmm...I think this would be interesting. U2 has been around for quite sometime, and they have made some excellent music. It would make sense (IMO) for them to get the second stand alone game.
@Turtleperson2 Apple doesn't want what happened with Kurt Cobain's image in Guitar Hero 5 to happen to The Beatles. Also, the overwhelming majority of Beatle fans (myself included) have zero interest in playing any other songs in the Rock Band library. The Beatles music doesn't sit well side by side with other artists. And I don't want to play through some slobs like Puddle of Mud or who ever to unlock And Your Bird Can Sing. Harmonix wanted this to be a stand alone game. They knew that was the only way it would work, and the only way they could secure the rights to the songs. And it works magnificently.
@NFSU2_RC3 You can listen to any type of music you want. When you play The Beatles Rock Band, however, they want you to play only as The Beatles. Much like the way The Beatles don't want their songs on those Time/Life compilations you see on late night infomercials, Apple doesn't want The Beatles songs sharing space with other artists. And when they make a demand like that you give it to them. No questions asked. They have that kind of power in the industry (they're the biggest selling act of THIS decade, 40 years after breaking up, that's gotta tell you something). It's a Beatles game with the Rock Band name on it. Not the other way around. I know this may be a "wacky" idea to many of you younger gamers, but it's possible to listen to music without it being in a video game! Invest in a pair of headphones, open your ears and your mind.
U2 is a good band, but they don't hold a candle to the Beatles. What was done for the Beatles is very unique and should be kept that way. That's like someone saying 'if this was done for them, then it should be the same for me'. I don't think it works that way.
im completly agree with genre rockbands.....this is getting crazy why does there need to be a game for every band now? genre would be some much better...i mean i like the Beatles but i dont ONLY want to listen to them
I've always said that if you want to know what U2 is going to do next just take a look at what The Beatles have already done, and have done INFINITELY better than what they could ever do.
For God's sake,if you really want to make "specific" games,at least limit them to genres. Example "Rock Band: Modern Hits" "Rock Band: Hard Core"--that'll be metal/nu-metal and stuff,"Rock Band: The Classics" Beatles Rock Band is EPIC,don't get me wrong, but honestly, there aren't that many other bands that are good enough for their own game. I would totally buy a modern hits one cuz I dig that stuff.I get bored after playing 3 songs from the same band tbh,I have no idea why Beatles are an exception, but they just are, lol,Harmonix cannot reproduce that success with another band.
Way to think about cashing in guys. I know that I don't support any of this OVER PRICED MUSIC NONSENSE. I find them in bargain bins for $10 on clearance. That way the publisher sees no success from the sale. \ \ While I do want publishers to do well, I do not want them charging $60 for something that took minimal work to produce.
Getting their own game is a bit much. They deserve the extended track-pack like Queen, Iron Maiden and AC/DC, but not a full game.
I love Rock Band, but what a surprise that U2 now want a piece of it. They'll jump on any thing they can squeeze money out of (a musical about spider-man FFS) just like Metallica do. With the amount of money that U2 have they could pay someone else to make a game for them. Just to make sure I'm getting my point across, I HATE U2 (the money grubbing ba***rds).
U2's the only band I would consider picking up a dedicated music game for. Best news I've heard today! They have a huge collection of great songs. Can't wait!
On what planet is U2 not popular? I think something like this would sell massive numbers. Maybe not as huge as The Beatles, but they a have an absolutely massive fan base.
I wasn't buying Rock Band before and if U2 puts any songs on it that only drives me further away. I hate their music.
Hold on, hold on. U2 are known for being one of the naffest bands around; for the over-40's excluisively. They shouldn't have to consider his game; it's a "NO"!
I believe Queen deserves to have their own game before U2 does, and Queen is just getting a 10-pack next week. Oh wait, there's SingStar Queen already, lol. These band-centric games need to stop, likenesses and songs can both be added via DLC.
All their best songs could fit on a single CD. There are very few bands that have enough great songs to justify a game by themself, and U2 is not one of them. A better approach would be to do what Guitar Hero does, and use songs from other bands in addition to the featured artist.
People give Bono crap for one thing he did along time ago. I personally think he is great and U2 is the best band. I will get this game.
U2's a great band and all, even with Bono's relentless self-righteousness. But I dunno if they're big enough to warrant their ow rock band game. EVEN the Beatles suffered a bit due to being only one band, and they're the only band I think is big that could rake in enough sales to make it worth it.
Never really listened to them but they have a large fan base so it should be a good game, ill get it like every other RB and GH..........
after bono saw what they(activision) did to kurt, they(U2) considering going rock band is a good idea but doubts lingers in my mind
Not a big U2 fan, but it would be smart of them to choose Rock Band over Guitar Hero after seeing what Harmonix did with The Beatles, which is a great looking game. I'd probably pick it up when the price goes down.
I love U2 and have been dreaming of this for a long long time. I really hope it happens. I'm all for these band centric games. I hope everyone else that is wishing for their favorite band to get their own game get's their wish. Bands such as KISS, The Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, Radiohead, and others deserve to have their day in the sun.
U2 are too obnoxious for a good Rock Band game. I don't want to be playing Bono's personal homage to himself.
If I weren't so bad at these games I'd really welcome this. I freakin' love U2! ...but that doesn't change the fact that my aging fingers can't seem to come to terms with the 5 button fret-a-majig.
Yeah, every band is now trying to put the name in a game. I hope these games will be good. There is nothing worst than having your face stamped in a bad product. Good luck for them
