The games industry gathers in Brighton to recognise the year's big achievers, with Sony dominating the Develop Awards.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe was the big winner in this year's Develop Industry Excellence Awards, which took place last night at the Hilton Metropole in Brighton on the UK's south coast. It took home three awards, whilst other notable winners included Bizarre Creations and Criterion.
The event was attended by around 400 members of the UK and European development community, and more than 60 companies were nominated in four main categories for a total of 18 awards.
SCEE won the Publishing Hero award for its achievements throughout the past year, as well as two awards for Buzz! The Music Quiz--the first for New Console IP (intellectual property), and the second for Innovation in the Buzz! controllers.
Liverpool-based Bizarre Creations won two awards for their work on the Xbox 360--the Best Use of Online, which related to Geometry Wars 2 on Xbox Live Arcade, and the night's biggest accolade, the Grand Prix award for Project Gotham Racing 3.
Another UK studio, Criterion, also scooped two gongs in the ceremony. Best Art/Sound was awarded jointly for arcade racer Burnout Revenge and sumptuous shooter Black, and it took the Best In-House Development Team accolade as well.
In the Studio Category, BigBig won Best New UK/European Studio, Rebellion was named Most Improved Studio, and Gameloft won the Mobile Studio award. Rockstar Leeds took the Best Handheld Studio title, thanks in large part to the success of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories on the PlayStation Portable.
More information on the awards can be found on the Develop Conference Web site.
plz explain this so far on this article every1 has been saying that sony opied the wii controller for its buzz game but that sounds extreme idiotic as the buzz controller has been out for over 3 months here in Aus while the WIiiremote aint out till later this year plus the buzz control only consists of 4 coloured buttons with no motion sensing technology what so ever so for all those fanboys that keep dissing sony and ahy other company please grow up and stop shoving crap down into others ppl throats coz its because of u ppl that takes the meaing of fun away from the gamers
big deal. they give Oscars and Grammys to losers and talentless wonders too. ps2 was the last popular fony console. lol eyetoy... as well as singstar... and their fans label Nintendo kiddie!!
I'm starting to think Sony likes seeing its name everywhere. That must be their new ad campaign, do anything possible to get their name talked about. Also, the title made it sound like Sony won tons of rewards; I think it should have some respect for the other companies.
I don't care what fanboys here are saying, Sony deserves the awards. They have done alot of things, but some people just ignore what they have done, and start basing for fu**ing reason. Anyway, good job Sony and keep up the good work.
Desi-Gangsta "sony did not deserve it" And Microsoft does? They still have yet to prove themselves. Sony has proven themselves for over a decade now. They proved that they deliver on great games. What does Microsoft deliver, PC ports and one exclusive series which is Halo? Microsoft has alot of work to do.
controller? buzz? hmmmmmmmmm.........maybe the best one after guitar hero. i think its not european.
Sony needed this...unfortunately it's gonna need a lot more. Hopefully the big S will throw down some sucker punches pretty soon here, it's getting awfully close to launch time. By the way, Sony may lie and cheat at times, but this is no different from any other multi-national corporation. Microsoft for instance? Last time I checked they didn't just sell Xboxes. Here's a small list of the recent "lies and cheats": 1) The European Commission recently decided to levy a $357 million antitrust fine. 2) 35 million dollar fine last year in South Korea. Talk about lies and cheats, M$ is the biggest one. Sony doesn't systematically squash its competitors, instead it just cuts costs (sometimes illegally) and makes better products, so, eat it. Here's another little diddy for you M$ lovers (not that I don't think the 360 kicks serious ass, but you guys are annoying) -PC Magazine: "Americans prefer Sony, Apple: Microsoft appeal wanes"
It's like giving the best picture oscar to jerry bruckheimer every year b/c his movies have the most explosions
Oh wow, three rinky dink awards, that's going to make the Sony haters real jealous. Eh, they derserve some positive press after that stupid racist claim. Hate to beat a dead horse, but Sony didn't need that s**t because that ad wasn't racist. I'm hoping they see some more positive press in the future, this story is a good start.
God, the title makes it sound like Sony sweeped the floor, but they only earned a few awards. At least give the other companies credit, geez. I know Sony has been getting a lot of negative press lately, but don't over-credit them, GameSpot.
Great Job Sony, nice to see some good news about them. oh and before you post the award is for the buzz controller not the PS3 controller so Wii fanboys: dont flip out. read the article before you post.
When I opened this, I thought they got a dubious award of bad advertising... ah well. Yeah, this is the first good Sony news I've heard in months, but it _really_ doesn't change the fact that they're screwed next-gen.
e1viento it was Pelican who created the motion sensing controller for the PSone, not Sony. Furthermore Nintendo created the first motion sensing cartridge, Kirby's tilt 'n' tumble for the gameboy color. Anyway, congratulations to all the winners for their achievements.
How comes Rockstar Leeds took the Best Handheld Studio title?!? There are others who deserve this title much better.
The Buzz controller came out a year or two ago, and the Buzz game is a lot of fun for families. So I agree, it is nice to see Sony getting an award for their family-titles over the regular GoW and GTA crap they usually offer their fans. And yes, the Wii controller is more innovative, but we've worn that down in every other thread already. Give Sony a chance guys.
That's my city. I live quite near that hotel. Why didn't I hear about this. This is the first time in a long time I have heard good news for Sony in the news section.
Actually the buzz game and its controller came out before any of this wii controller stuff, so stop getting offended. Also the fact remains that it is just a buzzer not a motion sensor - so how they hell was it a copy - you people need to think before you blurt out.
The controller they are reffering to is the peripheral you use to play THAT particular game. I live in the U.K so i know what this crap is about. They got the PAST achievements award and 3 awards essentially for the Buzz! music quiz game(1 for IT's controller-it's a buzzer btw). Basically the kids love it, it's family fun with buzzers. Nice that they won something for their efforts last year.
Thats all good, but I dont understand why they recieved an award for there controller, considering the wii controller is a lot more inovative and it was announced first.
Buzz was an innovation. Even my Grandmother, who had never played a computer game before, whooped all of us on the music quiz. Anything that allows non gamers to play games deserves credit. I cant wait for PS3 and its new controller. The Wii controller is a major part of the system whereas the PS3 motion sensing is just an extra.
Preparing for someone to say... "OMG! SONY WONNED AWERDS!? WTF!? NOT FAIR! 360 AND WII NEED TO WIN AWARDS! SONY DONT DESERVE NOW AWERDS! SONY SUCS! WTF?" Anyway, good for Sony though. Finally some good PR...
