UK Chart: Crysis 3 lands top, Aliens: Colonial Marines sales drop 84%

Crysis 3 and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance finish in first and second place, but neither manages to beat Aliens: Colonial Marines' opening weekend.

EA's Crysis 3 has taken pole position in the UK charts, firing an arrow into the chart dreams of the disappointing Aliens: Colonial Marines. Gearbox's first-person shooter saw an 84 percent drop in sales and finishes in fifth place.

Konami's Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance lands in the second spot, with 5,500 sales separating first and second place.

It's the first week this year that there has been a new number one and number two in the charts. However, neither managed to shift as many copies in its opening weekend as Dead Space 3 or Aliens: Colonial Marines, which still holds the record for biggest-selling opening week of 2013.

Elsewhere, the ever-reliable FIFA 13 hangs around in third, followed by Call of Duty: Black Ops II in fourth. Dead Space 3 is sixth, Far Cry 3 is seventh, Need for Speed: Most Wanted eighth, Assassin's Creed III ninth, and Hitman: Absolution tenth.

The Top 20 UK charts for the week ending February 23:

1. Crysis 3
2. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
3. FIFA 13
4. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
5. Aliens: Colonial Marines

I didn't buy Alien Colonial Marines I did try it and thought it sucked though. I see a lot of people saying they lied and the earlier version was different. What was lied about regarding ACM? And what was so different about the 2011 showing of ACM?

Was looking forward to Crysis 3,only to find out i cant run it (because of DX11, the rest of my HW is ok,at least it was enough to play Crysis 2 on high settings)..I'm glad i get my games from The Pirate Bay,otherwise I would be pretty pissed..also Colonial Marines is not that bad when you didn't pay for it..

Wii U fans. What in the world happened to the Wii U edition of Alien Colonial Marines? Its like the game has mysteriously.disappeared from Wii U existence.

Red_Paladin

@youngzen69 The game is still slated for release within the WiiU's launch window (ending March 31st) The WiiU version was handled solely by Demiurge Studios while Gearbox was encumbered with Borderlands 2 (Nerve, TimeGate, and I think Demiurge as well handled the other versions) Sega is hoping the WiiU title turns out better as they intend to use that build for 720 and PS4 releases.

Crysis 3 looks as uninteresting and bland as Crysis 2.

@Dredcrumb9 What do you expect from a shooter ,to be a Mage like in Skyrim? at least graphics looks 10x better than COD and more ways to kill enemies, not like in BF3 or again COD where you just shooting from a gun and running forward

Once again fellow UK games buying public, I am ashamed! Crysis 3 and MGR: Revengeance are far more deserving of sales than the trash that is Aliens: Colonial Marines.

just finished, Crysis 3. competent experience, way too short, but it's heaps above the average spunkgargleweewee crap we are bomboarded with. the MP is refined and fun, but despite near perfect polish levels the community won't last.

so wait for a price drop, which will happen sooner than you think it will, and get it for half price.

Just wanted to add, as far as Aliens Colonial Marines goes...you know a game is bad when the trolls are the ones saying they like the game.

Nice to see Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is on the top 20 charts in second place. I had fun playing MGR with the Blade mode cutting Cyborg into picese, the Boss fights were insane but the final Boss takes the cake, and the Music is cool. Plantinum Game did a really good job and one of the best MGS spin-offs to date. I could've gone Pro.

"ACM sales drop 84%"  Good, I hope people got a lesson on pre-ordering games. I know I did and will never pre-order before reviews. Embargo until launch is such a sleazeball way to do business.

Kayweg

@SergioMX As much as i agree, you know that's not going to happen. ;)

Psycold

@SergioMX I have preordered many times and have been totally satisfied, for me it is easier sometimes when I have the money to spend it on the game before it comes out rather than wait and see if I have the money on release date or after. This was one of the first and only times where I fully regret preordering, but this is a rare case of a snake-headed company dangling a beloved franchise in front of people and using our nostalgia against us. I honestly hope Gearbox gets shut down after this.

@Psycold dude if you don't know whether you will have $60 release day, then maybe your priorities should lie elsewhere.

SergioMX
SergioMX like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Psycold That's good, but the very notion of paying for a game before you even know if it will be worth it or not is ridiculous. I feel like it's gotten to the point where they base their game's quality solely on marketing hype.  I feel like ACM was the worst offender, and will not be the only one now that devs see that pre-ordering and pre-order bonuses create guaranteed sales. I hope SEGA sues GB, because that's the only way Pitchford will come forth and apologize for ACM and lying about it.

Psycold
Psycold like.author.displayName 1 Like

@jorge69696 @Psycold haha, way to pass the blame on to the consumers. ACM "sold a lot"? Compared to what exactly? I think your definition of selling a lot of copies might be a bit outdated when you look at the top sellers, especially considering last October Borderlands 2 sold over 5 million copies...a game from the same company.

jorge69696
jorge69696 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Psycold "if the game is good then it will sell, if it sucks people will not buy it."

But ACM sucks and still sold a lot. You just contradicted yourself. Hell you even preordered it yourself.

Thanks for ruining the industry, 1 preorder at a time. I'm out.

Psycold
Psycold like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@SergioMX @Psycold For me, pre-ordering has nothing to do with it, if you compare any successful game that was recently released, almost 100% of AAA titles have pre-order bonuses, if the game is good then it will sell, if it sucks people will not buy it.

My GOTY for 2012 was Far Cry 3. I pre-ordered the special edition and got a few extra missions and guns, I'm happy with that but they also were not afraid to show their product before it was released. I researched the HELL out of FC3 because I was so excited for it, and by the time I had seen and read everything I knew it was going to be fantastic.

Aliens, well there was barely anything until the last couple of months, and the newer footage looked awful compared to the 2011 footage. The difference being, my love of the franchise and my trust in Gearbox blinded me, and that same love for the franchise might have caused me to buy it even if I had waited to see the reviews just because I held out some hope. Either way, I see your point because I'm sure a lot of people do not research games before pre-ordering.

petez34
petez34 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@SergioMX azzah! good for you. preordering never made any sense to me. IMO , it's a 'smoke and mirrors' marketing tactic, that provides little benefit to the costumer but lines the pockets of the dev's.

@Simplythebest12 agreed...the lifespan of FIFA games is really short...it cames in  around October and footbal season ends in May with Champions League Final...so your most likely only  about 7 months before that games become outdated and then new season starts with new rooster but same gameplay
