UK Chart: Little Big Planet 2 takes first

The Sackboy-fronted PS3 platformer debuts at number one, bumping Call of Duty: Black Ops to two. The new PS3 version boosts Mass Effect 2 back into the top 10.

PlayStation 3-exclusive Little Big Planet 2 took first place in the UK sales chart following launch on January 21. The Sackboy-fronted DIY platformer bumped Call of Duty: Black Ops from the top spot, which fell to number two with a 15 percent drop in sales. Wii dance title Just Dance 2 held firm in third place, while FIFA 11 dropped to number four.

Mass Effect 2 reentered the top 10 at number 7, thanks to the release of the PlayStation 3 version of the game, after being originally released as an Xbox 360 console exclusive in January 2010. Superpowered massively multiplayer online role-playing game DC Universe Online, available for the PC and PS3, landed at number 10 in its first week, but fell to 22 this week with the PS3 version still representing the lion's share of retail sales for the title.

The UK-developed Little Big Planet 2 was delayed from its original November launch date to ensure fans would get "the best experience imaginable," said Little Big Planet studio Media Molecule. Those fans had Sackboy's Prehistoric Moves to tide them over, at least, with that Move-based multiplayer spin-off released in December.

As well as giving Media Molecule time to put the finishing touches to the game, the shifted launch date served Little Big Planet 2 in the chart stakes. Little Big Planet 2's sales were on par with those of its predecessor, tallying 95 percent of the original game's sales, but it still made the UK number one spot, whereas Little Big Planet debuted at number four in a more competitive week of game releases (Gears of War 2 placed first in November 2008).

About the only thing this game doesn't have is a Call of Duty level...and that's a GOOD thing! Bravo on a killer production! This is what gaming should be about; FUN.

LBP2 deserves all the success it can get! It's simply amazing, trust me. This is one game you can't go wrong with.

Yes the game deserves it because it is excellent.

LBP2 is brilliant! But I read on another website that it sold 95 units less, not 95% of the original game's sales - Which is right? (or are they both right, and the game sold about 1900 copies..?)

Little Big Planet 2 deserves this so much. Even though our collector's edition was shocking compared to the US version. LBP2 is a truly fantastic game... 10/10 for me. And to all those people who think it's gay/for kids..... you haven't tried it yet!!
