UK Chart: Ni no Kuni enchants the UK as DmC drops out

Hitman HD Trilogy enters at fifth, and DmC: Devil May Cry drops out of the top 10.

Magical role-playing game Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch has dislodged Call of Duty: Black Ops II to take the top spot in this week's UK charts.

The PS3-exclusive Studio Ghibli and Level-5 collaboration--which scored a 9.0 in its GameSpot review--saw many retailers running out of stock over the weekend. Thirty-two percent of the game's total sales came from the £74.99 RRP Wizard's Edition.

Hitman HD Trilogy, the other new release this week, came in at fifth.

FIFA 13 sticks in second, with Far Cry 3 dropping one position to fourth. The rest of the top 10 is filled out with Assassin's Creed III, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Just Dance 4, Hitman: Absolution, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Capcom and Ninja Theory's DmC: Devil May Cry slips out of the top 10 into 11th place after three weeks on the chart, with Skyrim outselling it by less than 50 copies.

This week sees the release of Dead Space 3 and Scribblenauts Unlimited, but will either be able to take the charts crown from Ni no Kuni next week?

The Top 20 UK charts for the week ending February 2:

1. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
2. FIFA 13
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops II

News like this restores my hopes for the industry. I'm also hoping Square Enix is paying careful attention.

ni no kuni deserves it. also for it to be on one console, not multi, and still number one speaks volumes!!! the demo turned me off, but the actual game is much better than i ever imagined

@SirenAries Is it really that good cus the demo was really bad like you said, I think they made a mistake releasing an awkward demo otherwise I wouldv'e just bought the game and probably enjoyed it

A JRPG knocking COD off the top. Damn, don't make me have a little faith in you, humanity. Nah, it'll take a whole lot more than this. It's still a start though.

I am only 14 hours through the game, but Ni no Kuni has been an amazing ride so far.  I hope this will encourage Square Enix to make a proper Final Fantasy like FFX or earlier and provide confidence in Atlus heads to ramp up development on Persona 5.  And, while we are at it, Sega needs to make a sequel to Skies of Arcadia.

Could this be the comeback of great JRPGs? Hopfully the PS4 and Nextbox *highly unlikely* produce a lot more.

DmC continues to drop? Looks like alienating a fanbsse and marketing the game out to trolls doesn't make it a mega seller.

Maybe Square will take notice but I wouldn't hold my breath, nor is it really that important.  There's no need to rely on them to produce great RPGs like what FF once was.  It's obvious that there are plenty of developers willing to do create awesome games again.  With the success of Ni No Kuni, no doubt we'll see more.

I am glad Ni No Kuni is doing well...can only help to encourage developers to localize more JRPG's. Unfortunatelly is Ni No Kuni for me personally too...cuuuute...sweeet...sugar...i dont know.
I am great fan of Nausicaa:Valley of the Wind and also found Mononoke really good but Studio Ghibli didnt hit my taste this time with this character/art design.

@sladakrobotLiked your comment and everything. Just posting to give you a great word to add to the proverbial toolbox.

When you typed, "personally too...cuuuute...sweeet...sugar...i dont know."

The word is saccharine. Cloying also works.

Also (if you haven't played them), many of the more adult-themed "Tales" JRPG series might be right up your alley if you liked the graphical techniques in Ni No Kuni, but not necessarily its tone.

@1blackoneThanks for your comment :)
I played Tales of Destiny I+II ,Tales of Symphonia aswell as Tales of Vesperia but i still cant get along with the battle-system :(

While fighting in 2D,i felt i had more control over the battle. In 3D the system looses the tactic note(my opinion) and for a real action fight the system feels unflexible.
The story pushed me to the ending :)

I've had it since Thursday and I've already played for about 21 hours. That's a lot more time spent gaming than usual for me. I think this might finally be the game to get me into the more traditional JRPG's. I'm glad too because I've got loads of them in my collection that I've never played.

Very very happy that the good people of the UK have seen sense and put a deserving game at number 1.

I contributed my bit buying both the Wizards Edition and a regular one. Awesome game, really hope developers see that the west love their JRPG's too and produce more localisations of others in the future.

DmC Should be around second place, its much better than FarCry3 sure of it - and probably Black Ops as well.

I'm not surprise, is a great game. First game in ages that i had buy in the release date, without renting first.

Is truly a master piece, and i hope the inspiration for future JRPG's.

It's great to see Ni no Kuni doing so well sales wise it just shows people are starving for a good jrpg. Now if only other developers would get on the ball and make better rpgs *cough*Square-enix *cough*
