Grand Theft Auto takes liberties as football titles lose their edge; DS games continue to surge as DS Lites hit retail channels.
The latest from Rockstar Games rose to the top of the UK all-formats games chart this week, as Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories jumped 36 places (thanks to its recent debut on the PlayStation 2) all the way to number one. In doing so, it knocked 2006 FIFA World Cup down to second, although three football titles still featured in the top 10 as the actual World Cup rages on in Germany.
Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training (known as Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Just Minutes a Day in the US) moved up a place to third, continuing the good showing for Nintendo DS titles--Nintendogs: Dalmations & Friends was up five to seventh and Animal Crossing: Wild World dropped two to tenth.
Elsewhere, Eidos' duo of Hitman: Blood Money and Tomb Raider: Legend dropped to fifth and sixth respectively, just below Pro Evolution Soccer 5, which was fourth. Rise & Fall: Civilisations at War had a good sales week and jumped up six places to eighth, while Sensible Soccer 2006 fell to ninth.
Three new entries just failed to make the top 10 this week, with Over the Hedge debuting at 12, Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires hitting 13, and Metroid Prime: Hunters popping in at number 16. Management simulations Football Manager 2006 and Championship Manager 2006 both dropped out of the top 10, but the week's surprising underachiever was LocoRoco--despite a buzz surrounding the quirky platformer's release, it only managed 25th place in its first week of release.

1) DS Lite Launched 2) Brain Training and GTA are BUDGET PRICED(brain training is retailed at £20) 3).... THAT IS A MULTIFORMAT CHART!, just because you see tomb raider on 360 it meana nothing, it's ALL PLATFORMS!
ClayMeow "Three soccer games in the top 10? LOL. I'd like to see the US charts. " yer cuz you freakin suck at football! lol seriously though, why do people keep buying them? Where's the magic??? Even Liberty city stories, I had it on psp before I got rid of it. Fanboys go on & on about how great it is, but in 10 years time I aint guna look back and say, wow remember that gta game it was amazing. REAL genre defining games like Zelda and Shenmue, Goldeneye, MSR- they're the ones I still think of today. Shame when crappy old games with better graphics claws to top of charts. GTA had it's day a long time ago.. it's sooo y2k.....borrrrrrrring!!!!!
I'm kind of tired of people only playing the same old game for the past 5 years(talking about GTA here!!!!!). The other 9 positions are great games and deserve their spot.
No doubt the ds software and hardware sells well anywhere in the world.. its all about new games, genres and innovation. nintendo's here to stay. PSP's nothing but ports, and multimedia gimmickery. No NEW games to play. All Sequels. When you play on sony's machines you'll always feel "been there, done that.." sort of thing. Nothing NEW. No NEW experiences. NEW GRAPHICS is all they have..
the 360 is selling fine, its just like all new consoles there isn't a big supply of new games for the 360 right now. The 360 is still flying off of shelves don't worry celeso
Xbox 360 its nowhere to be seen, one out of ten what the hell, its not selling well??? its not selling at all, someone explain please...
I better buy brain training before everyone gets smarter than me... Too bad about Roco, I hope it's poor sales don't scare PSP developers away from trying new things.
Wow, Brain training and animal crossing are beating LocoRoco which is the most hyped PSP game, and Valkyrie profile was unnoticed in Japan
Actually the 360 games have topped the charts nonstop since like launch and all of a sudden people think the ps2 is owning the xbox360? Funny when elder scrolls, ghost recon and many other games just came out the 360 was dominating the charts constantly. Watch how badly the 360 will start beating the ps2 again when the big games like Gears of War come out later this year ;)
I'm not surprised PS2 is beating 360. 360 is good but very overrated. I think Nintendo is the best, then microsoft, than sony..........but I think the console war outcome will be 1. Sony 2.Msoft 3. Nintendo
Metroidlink: Katamari was another title that probably would have done far better on the DS. I feel sorry for PSP owners as poor sales of non PS2 port style games are probably going to make them play safe with everything rather than the 1 in 100 titles like they do now.
I actually don't see all the hype about LocoRoco. I played it, and it was fun...for a few hours. After that it gets old. I have to give the developer props for actually making an original title for the PSP, though. We'll probably only see one or two notable ones per year, sadly.
Surprise at Loco Roco?. The majority of PSP owners didn't buy their systems for quirky DS style games, they bought them to play the GTA's & Pro Evos.
Hmm...interesting. The direct port of the semi-port of GTA III grabs number one. Can't say I'm surprised. The name alone sells it...
I would hope GS could get the sale-figures from more places in Europe. Like Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Scandinavia too
GTA: LCS making it to #1 was pretty much expected, to be honest. The name alone sells it. Brain Training at #3 surprises me. Many action orientated titles for the DS didn't make it up there. Nintendo's plan to tap into a new market seems to be finally coming across over here, seeing as Animal Crossing is also sticking in the top 10.
Wow, DS is really taking off. XBOX podcast/Major Nelson even comments on playing the handheld. I really need to check it out.
Well thats cool GTA still going strong I am so happy for Rock Star this just shows when you say a game is bad it will sell.Because of all the press maybe Hillary plays GTA in her house just does not want to come out with it and she was like how can I help sell more GTA games my saying it is evil then more people will buy it.I can't wait to see what next month holds there looks to be some real cool games coming out next month for the PSP Valkyrie Profile and Blade Dancer look to be cool games.Even if Blade Dancer is not that good at least Valkyrie Profile was great years ago and with the added stuff will be even better.
Playing Xbox One games on somebody else's console will also require a check-in every hour. Full Story
