US console sales chart: July 16-22
Gamers are ready for football as NCAA 07 takes three of top four; Cars motors trifecta into top 10.
While other publishers turn and hide from the summer season, Electronic Arts welcomes the sweltering sun with open arms. That's because two of the publisher's biggest releases hit during the heat. NCAA Football and Madden NFL make their yearly debuts in July and August, respectively, tackling both the competition and sales charts.
This week was the first time on the board for NCAA Football 07, which was released on the Xbox 360, Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable on July 18. The PlayStation 2 version of the game debuted at number one on Best Buy's top 10 console charts this week, while the Xbox 360, Xbox, and PSP versions landed in second, fourth, and ninth, respectively.
Last week's number-one game, New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS, was punted into third, while its cohort and last week's second place finisher, Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, fell to number seven.
The power of Pixar was evident, as three THQ games based on the film Cars sped into the top 10. The PS2 version took pole position among its siblings, landing in fifth. The Game Boy Advance version parked in sixth, and the GameCube edition skidded into 10th.
Rounding out the top 10 was Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for the PS2.
