Viva Piñata sprouts on DS

[UPDATE] Microsoft to bring Rare's papier-mache-filled garden to Nintendo's handheld.

During this year's E3 Media & Business Summit, Microsoft revealed it would be not only porting its casual-friendly Xbox 360 game Viva Piñata to PCs, but also developing a brand-new iteration in the series for its flagship console, titled Viva Piñata: Party Animals.

It now appears that Rare's vibrantly colored pinatas have been breeding like bunnies, as during Kids' Day at Comic-Con International: San Diego on Sunday, Microsoft announced it is readying a Nintendo DS version of Viva Piñata.

Aside from it being a port of the Xbox 360 game, details on the project are slim. However, a Rare employee posting under the username "Errrm" stated on an official Viva Piñata forum that the game would employ an angular viewpoint: "I believe it is a isometric view, rather than a 3d view. I am guessing this is something to do with the graphics power of the DS."

Though Microsoft acquired the UK-based studio from Nintendo in 2002, Rare has released a fairly steady stream of games for the Japanese giant's handheld in recent years. In addition to several Donkey Kong Country installments on the Game Boy Advance, Rare most recently brought its signature pint-sized gorilla to the DS in 2006 with Diddy Kong Racing DS.

[UPDATE] Rare has sent along updated information on Viva Piñata DS. Not only will the game include all the trappings of the Xbox 360 version, but it will also feature a greater variety of tools and tool actions, an updated journal and encyclopedia, and a wider variety of papier-mache critters. The DS version will also include new game modes including sandbox, where players have "full and easy access" to the piñatas, and episodes, which ties in to the game's spin-off TV series.

Rare also revealed that Viva Pinata DS will take advantage of several of the DS's unique capabilities. Players will able to interact with their pinatas using touch-screen controls, and pinatas can be exchanged via the DS's Wi-Fi capabilities.

I'm glad this is getting a DS version, but I'm a bit mystified that they're adding extra features when they couldn't manage to add *any* changes whatsoever to the PC version... I suppose it's because this will have to be more of a ground up remake to fit on the DS hardware, instead of a straight port like the PC one.

This is awesome!!! this means that banjo kazooie and conker can actually show up on the Wii VC seeing as the DK games were rereleased under Rare's watchful eye. (Keeps fingers crossed) Hmm i guess this also means that a Halo game for the DS isnt all that farfetched an idea after idea (scratches chin and ponders...)

Sandbox mode would be great! But, better on the 360, I think they should make a sequal, or online updates for Xbox 360, while they should still have a DS version, but still stick the manly the 360, and add new stuff to that more.

So does this mean a M$ portable is that much further off?? I had a feeling that they had something in the works but now I'm not so sure. Although one game doesn't totally change my mind, it definitely raises the eyebrow...

revczar - "the only way there will be a FPS Halo DS game is if a new version of a DS with 2 analogs comes out (or at least an adapter for the DS for two analogs)" metroid prime: hunters is a fps and it doesnt have an adapter for analog sticks and it is great, and sold great, so i think a halo game would be possible for ds, but i doubt microsft will let its holy grail that is halo on any other console than theirs (yes it is on pc but windows only)

This is just too weird for me.. Microsoft making a game for Nintendo?

"PixyMisao:Unfortunately Viva Piniata isn't going to sell on the DS even half as well as it did on 360." a horrendously colourful and cutegame on the only machine owned by the majority of societies groups. I reckon its gonna sell very well actually

"PixyMisao:Unfortunately Viva Piniata isn't going to sell on the DS even half as well as it did on 360." Why is that? i for one would really like to get it. And i'm sure many others would say the same thing.

M$ will not make a handheld system. So instead, is supporting the leader in handhelds, Nintendo. while it's directly supporting Nintendo in the long run, M$ knows enough to support something they aren't good in. So which is better? The DS or the PSP? M$ thinks DS.

PixyMisao
PixyMisao

Rare is only staying afloat because of their work with Nintendo (and M$ bottomless money pit). Unfortunately Viva Piniata isn't going to sell on the DS even half as well as it did on 360.

Maybe they can all work in Harmony and Bring us: Killer Instinct & Golden Eye. And have them come out to both 360 & Wii Now those would Sell like GANG BUSTERS

when RARE was brought by M$ the contract had a part that said that RARE can still develop for DS (maybe even the Wii) RARE aready made Diddy Kong Racing and a Donkey Kong Country, and Banjo Pilot both games with THQ publishing and the only way there will be a FPS Halo DS game is if a new version of a DS with 2 analogs comes out (or at least an adapter for the DS for two analogs)

Could be great. I liked the 360 version so I think it will be excellent.

So....does that means MS want to team up with Nintendo to fight Sony? hahahaha. That just show how strong Sony was.

I see some comments saying that MS doesn't completely own Rare. That is absolutely NOT true. Go to Rare's website it states that they are a "wholly owned subsidiary". That means that they are entirely owned by MS. Anyway this is great news. I think MS and Nintendo should just team up and get it over with. Halo DS should be the next thing on the list.

im not supprised that microsoft is doing this. they were going to make halo ds, they made mechassalt, and others i cant think of.

"wow MS is so desperate they are teaming up with competition. MGS4 gameplay was good, but man i didnt realize how good" Yeah pretty sure Sony is the least of Microsoft's worries. Well, actually maybe I spoke too soon. I mean, PS3 does have... you know... um... resistance! yeah! resistance! and... um............

Wait, so Microsoft's second party developer is releasing a game for "the enemy?" It's not a title I would want, but if Microsoft and Nintendo worked together...dear God, I feel sorry for Sony.

....I will always be skeptical about Rare releases as long as they are with MS. Just look at Rare's line-up since leaving Nintendo, and then before leaving Nintendo. Kameo, PDZ, Conker: Live & Reloaded, Viva Pinata, etc -- definately not as good as Blast Corps, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo Kazooie, etc. I think the only thing that improved when Rare left Nintendo is that Donkey Kong sounds more like a monkey now, as opposed to a drowning monkey. :)

i agree with StarDust666 GoldenEye should be rereleased on both the VC as the orginal version and on XLA with Live Muitlplayer i know M$ loves the moneys and GoldenEye is the orginal groundbreaking console FPS

if Microsoft were to make a handheld i believe it would fail and they know this too so why not make games for the best selling handheld out right now its rreally common sense

quain-chi
quain-chi

Why are people so shocked about this, Microsoft already have a good few games on the ds and gba. Its mr pants, mech assault, Diddy kong racing, age of empires, the rare donkey kong games. This isnt something new, they are simply reaching an audience, in a simple and incredibly cost affective way. In that they can release games into the handheld market, without creating their own. As for them not releasing games on the PSP, the games that they have released into the handheld market are just a better fit on the DS and Sony would prob not allow them to put them on the PSP.

MSG-Deathscythe

i don't care about those pinatas but stardust666 hit it right on the money. if there are any rare games that we want on a nintendo system, it's goldeneye and the original perfect dark on vc.

"wow MS is so desperate they are teaming up with competition. MGS4 gameplay was good, but man i didnt realize how good" Shame that Konami seem troubled over the idea of a PS3 release only and may "Have to take some steps" if sales don't pick up as they said at E3. Enjoy your ports of 360 games :D

StarDust666
StarDust666

Golden Eye would be perfect on VC! whats the harm of releasing it? i mean Rare dosn't make any money on GE at the moment. if they were to release it on VC, its mean more money for Rare and MS. either way they both win and Wii (we) win also.... oh drool on perfect dark and blast crop....

Now its looked like Nintendo have set the trend... MS second party are coming back to the beloved Nintendo. it go something like this, if you can't beat em', join em'. next we'll see halo... only a matter of time
