EA and Mythic Entertainment replacing 10-day sampler with unlimited playtime, level-capped access to fantasy MMORPG.
Companies who deal in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game genre have tried a number of methods to put a little wind in the sails of their products, ranging from 10-day free trials to free-to-play business models. Today, Mythic Entertainment and Electronic Arts revealed their latest tactic to get new players into Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, announcing an "endless" free-trial program for the game.
The endless free-trial program replaces Warhammer Online's current 10-day sampler and lets prospective players play Mythic's MMORPG as any class without a time restriction up until level 10. Players will be able to explore all of the tier-one environments as well as engage in player-versus-player scenario matches.
Further, Mythic said that the endless trial download client will stream the game to users' computers after an initial 1GB download, letting new combatants wade into the fray more quickly. Additional content will then be downloaded as players explore more of the Warhammer Online world.
I was a big fan othe warhammer universe and used to play 40k when I was a kid. I pre-ordered this game and I thought it was great when I first started playing, it had some really cool ideas like Public Quests... but they just didn't take it as far as they shoud've of. I ended up cancelling my subscription because most guilds I was in were only interested in doing keep sieges and no one really helped the lower ranked members (partly because the game prevents high-levels from low level areas). I got lost towards the end, I wasnt' sure what to do and trying to take cities and always failing got boring... I hope they can turn it around in the next year, but what I really would like is a Warhammer 40K MMORPG!
Nice idea but basicly gonna end up with 1000s of lvl tens and hardly any one higher because they don't want to pay reminds me of rubescape. But hell I'll give it another try
It is fun till you hit level 20. Then the leveling grinds to a halt. At least it did back when I played. They should have never changed the speed of leveling from the beta. Capping at 10 might draw people in but they will probably quit at level 20.
I just started playing about 2 weeks ago, and I have to say that this game is the best pvp game on the market. It has the best classes (24) and the most pvp options, and a pvp spec which is seperate from your regular spec. Its the best pvp MMO right now hands down. Mythic will continue to make this game better as evidence of DAOC which is still available today.
This game has changed incredibly since release. As of now I would say it has mostly been for the better. However, they are still trying to figure out an endgame solution. Mythic has been extremely active on the forums in letting us know whats going on. It may not be perfect now, but they will figure it out. :)
WAR's PvP>WoW and I much prefer a more pvp oriented MMO, WoW held me for quite some time, then the PvP started sucking. Warhammer is da beztezt! WOW is for stuntiez! (literally, theres too many dwarves in that game XD)
I really, really enjoy Warhammer online. I just think it needs some more variety then the quests and RVR, thats what WoW has in spades. Tons of Variety. But that game got way boring way quickly :/ Warhammer is the first mmo that I've played that I've got a maxed out character, and 2 more following on its heals. With more players, it would definatly become more enjoyable.
MMO publishers/designers have to realize that they get only one shot at being successful in this market. If the game isn't relatively bugfree and complete upon release then the gaming market is going to write it off... no matter what they do to try and get players to try it down the road. This move is desperate and shows that WAR has been a complete disaster.
I might check this out. I'd thought about doing the 10-day-trial offer, but I never got around to it. School is my biggest concern now, but if I don't have to worry about my trial expiring ...
As BornGamer said this is a disaster of a game. I bought it for the promised world PvP but the developers killed it by putting instant battlegrounds. This is the first MMO I stoped playing before the 30 days were over.
this screams desperate to me... Its too bad, i wanted to like the game, but it was sub-par. Performance issues in RvR, terrible terrible terrible fort design to make it even worse... and the CONSTANT Stun/knockback/etc meant you spent more time waiting and less time fighting.
Warhammer Online seemed to have so much promise pre-release. It turned out to be a major disappointment.
If only the PvE at launch wasn't so terrible and there weren't so many damn servers, this game could have actually been a rival to WoW.
i bought the warhammer collector's edition, but never opened it and never played it. i think i'll just hang onto it and see if the value ever goes up. but my friend has it and i watched him playing it and it didn't do anything for me. i play wow...wow's the best MMO, period. end of discussion. for the horde.
I'd kind of much rather play this than WoW, but I never really made friends on WAR that I'd chose over my old WoW friends sadly.
This game is horrible, because of the VAST, and I mean VAST, outnumbering of Order by Destruction. I'ts almost not even fun playing Order, because you are so drastically outnumbered on every single keep siege or town defend. Has anyone even captured the inevitable city yet??
@Ashmasaki LOL. Get over it. All fantasy themed games are derivative of past efforts in the genre be it books, movies or games. You're just mad all your friends went back to WoW.
@moragtong25 I remember those days as well (wasn't too long ago). I actually hopped off WoW for a few weeks to play it, then realized that it wasn't worth it. It blows my mind how every promising MMO seems to flop, especially when one compares the game to WoW.
It's a shame this game isn't doing better it's waaaay better than WoW. Also Warcraft lore is a lame imitation of the awesomeness that is Warhammer.
MoragTong, I play this game, and it is a REALLY good MMO... But what you say is true. Nothing can save it at the point it's at.
I remember when everyone reffered to this game as WoW killer :) And now with new desperate attempt wich wont save this game from oblivion.
