June game industry sales up 60 percent in the Great White North according to NPD; Nintendo's latest handily tops next-gen rivals.
Nintendo is on a roll in Canada. The Wii and Nintendo DS have turned the hardware sales each month into a two-horse race, with each of them often doubling up the sales of any other system on the market. June was no exception, according to retail sales figures the industry-tracking NPD Group released to GameSpot this week.
For the month, the Wii sold just over 53,000 units, with the DS trailing behind at 45,700 systems sold. Sony's PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable were next in line, with 21,000 and 18,500 sold, respectively. On the rest of the next-gen front, Microsoft's Xbox 360 moved 13,500 systems, while the PlayStation 3 sold through 6,500 units and was trumped by the Game Boy Advance; Nintendo's portable predecessor to the DS sold 8,800 systems.
The industry as a whole took in C$91.5 million ($87.7 million) for the month, a 60 percent jump over the C$57.2 million ($54.8 million) posted for June of 2006. That's in line with the industry's totals for the year-to-date, as Canadian retail game sales for the first six months of 2007 reached C$497.8 million ($477.2 million), up a little less than 61 percent from last year's first-half total of C$310 million ($297.2 million).
Hardware sales and accessory sales both nearly doubled for the month, with the former up 93 percent from the previous June to C$39.5 million ($37.9 million) and the latter up 96 percent to C$11.3 million ($10.8 million). Interestingly, the hardware growth came almost exclusively from the home systems. Console sales were up more than 197 percent for the month, while the portable system market was virtually flat.
Retail software of all kinds was up more than 31 percent, from C$31 million ($29.7 million) to C$40.7 million ($39 million). That growth was similarly skewed to the console sector, which jumped nearly 42 percent to C$28.9 million ($27.7 million), while handheld games grew less than 12 percent to reach C$11.8 million ($11.3 million). The best-selling software titles of the month are listed below.
Canada's top 10 best-selling games for June 2007:
1. Mario Party 8--Wii

hahahahahaaa, man, are u guys sure the ps1 isnt beating the ps3 too?? David Jaffe's gonna have a noose around his neck to roll out god of war 3 pronto.
I have to admit I am a HUGE sony fan. I had an XBOX for a while but I didn't really like it, especially when microsoft pretty much killed it after the 360 started selling like crazy. I mean look at the top of this page on the system selections, XBOX isn't even on there. Whereas the PS2 is. Anyway this does have a point, I have a PS2 and love it (RE4, GH2 and GOW2 are awesome) but I don't see myself getting a PS3. C$660 as a married working student is just not feasible (you ever try talking your partner into letting you spend $600+ on some non-neccesity, impossible). So the Wii is definitely on my horizon (virtual console, i grew up with the 8 bit NES, can't wait to play Zelda 2 on it). Plus my wife really likes the wii sports which is definitely a bonusl.
That is soo sad when a system with all of 2 games worth playing continues to outsell the consoles with plenty of good games. I'd rather go back to my n64 than ever play gamecube or Wii again...what happened to you nintendo? you used to be the cats ass of videogaming... Guess it's a good thing i jumped on the microsoft bandwagon
I live in Canada. I invited my friend over, and we played Mario Party 8 for the Wii. I decided not to get MP8. And I didn't exactly love TP, either. It just made me wanna go play OoT, which I have for the N64 console.
Wii has been sold out here since the day it was released, I wish I could say that about anyother platform ever. Some fad!
GBA beats PS3 lol, but for good reason. The GBA has 3 versions that range from 40-70$ new where as the PS3 has its 500$ (atm price) and was 600$ before pricecut. Also PS3 games are 40+new where as GBA games are easy to get used for 10$ and there are more of them by a large factor. So there you have it.
btw....itz a huge embarassment that the ps3 cant beat the gba...plus..why are ppl getting a gba when the ds is only like 50 buckz more???
ah, Wii Fit! i would like to try it, probably buy one too. Not for myself but everyone in my family and friends to try it. How cool is that! Killzone2 for the family or Wii Fit... im sick and tied of killing things... its time for some yoga or Dance Dance erobic
i love that i am Canadian, and it was like 30 degrees today (thats Celsius, which means it was hot and there was no snow) i have a Wii, 360, and DS and have 7 out of 10 of those games... sweet
Lemme add to Wusscrores list Boogie Manhunt 2 (hopefully comes out) Mario Sports games including: Mario Golf Mario Tennis Mario Baseball Mario Kart Wii Carnival Brain Age Wii Edition Resident Evil:Umbrella Chrincles Wii Fit and all the games associated with it Harvest Moon (to u wii fans out there, is harvest moon the game with Ness in it, it used to be my fav game. If it is im gonna party) Future Mario Parties Wii Virtual Console( games from these systems: MSX (japan only, a commodoe like system that stared many franchises like MGS,) Sega Master Sydtem (again, Japan only) NES SNES n64 TurboGrafx-16 Sega Genesis Hopefully, the rumored Gamboy and Soul Calibur Legends Looks like Nintendo has a pretty crazy lineup VIVA NINTENDO!!!!!!!!!! I happen to be a proud Canadian. I thought that the PS3 was at least more popular than the GBA... who wouold of guessed that this would of happened.
Canadians are wise people after all. Kuda001; can you mention more than two games that dosen't involved guns and kiiling things?? cos those are homophobians. Super Mario Galaxy, i can't hardly wait! its a fresh new ideas. is there a game like it before? playing in zero gravity, a new meaning in freedom of movement... how cool is that? halo, medal of honour ect.. shoot anything that moves... same old same old.... how boring can you goe??
I'm Canadian and I own a PS3. But the markets in Canada don't reflect the world's markets. I think Japan does however.
lol i find it funny that no one who owns a ps3 put up a line of games up ... cuz they have the exact same games as 360 .. lol copy cats .... meh its all good good job for the wii cant wait for MP3
Well done nintendo, good taste Canada. i am not really into this next-gen wars stuff but the wii really is impressive.
I agree with u black_ice. I'm Canadian and i'm glad Nintendo's so popular up here. Gotta quit calling it the Frozen North; it's not winter up here that's for sure!
I'm canadian and damn proud of it and i own a wii and a DS lite =D and now cuz of it i cant get my friends to leave my house they always playing my wii and mario party and its gonna get worse when Brawl , Galaxy and Strikers comes out cuz we freaks for those games h well good times anyways heres to nintendo for making a good system that is sooo addicting and for making major sales world wide but yea as for resident evil give it till next month and it will bump up in the standing i couldnt find one lol
People in Canada like small things... ___________________________________ Will Smith IS The Fresh Prince Of Fresh Air !!!
I'm not even saying that the 360, or the PS3 don't have good games coming out, I'm just sick of people acting like the Wii doesn't as well. Also, Kuda, Beautiful Katamari is coming to the Wii..so...?
I purchased #'s 1,2,8,9, and 10. But not all in June, only #8 for June. Hooray for Canada and Nintendo and its success!
@kuda001 Yay, a big pile of western made crap games for PC geeks. @wusscore Now THOSE are some power slammin' titles.
"Sure, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess been out for a while, but Resident Evil 4 Wii edition at least should be selling more... At least if you can tell from the the list, the Demographics of the gamers that are buying these games are mostly kids... Nintendo should be proud of their success in Canada. " RE4 was release on June 19, thats probably why its not higher on the list. I had to go to 3 best buys and 2 eb games to finally track down a copy. Most of the people that I know who own a wii are in the 20's.
Sorry kuda001 but most of the games are also on ps3 and most of the wii games are exclusive sorry you asked for it
Sorry 'wusscore' but you asked for it Halo 3 Bioshock Blue Dragon Halo 3 Moto GP 08 Fable 2 Stranglehold Eternal Sonata Half Life 2: The Orange Box Medal of Honor: Airborne Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Haze Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction Army of Two Turok Beautiful Katamari Blacksite: Area 51 Warhammer: Mark of Chaos GTA IV
The upcoming games list for the Wii is extremely exciting: Mario Strikers: Charged Metroid Prime: Corruption Super Mario Galaxy Super Smash Bros: Brawl Battallion Wars II Endless Ocean No More Heroes Geometry Wars: Galaxies Zak and Wiki Dewy's Adventure Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 My Sims Table Tennis Bully Devil Kings 2 Dragon Quest Swords Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Nights: Journey of Dreams Red Steel 2 Disaster: Day of Crisis Sorry, but you asked for it.
I love seeing Sony and Nintendo sales above the rest. Go PS2, Wii and DS! (i'm going to try and ignore PS3 sales figures).
Well i didnt really like Mario Party 8, but i did love Paper Mario, and well for the DS POKEMON, for everyone who is saying they cant see why the Wii is doing so well. Well Alot of people just like the games, there alot of fun, and i know some of my older friends just bought it for the VC. They want to play the games the used to. Im not saying you shouldnt buy another system, cause i did, ((PS3)) Im just sayin i know why the Wii is selling more, i mean right now its games are better. And i honestly think that the Games that are coming out later this year are going to kick some ARS. I mean Mario Galexy, hopefully that will be as good or better as Mario 64. Metroid Prime 3, sorry but i love samus.....she's hott, and she kicks ars...what more do you need in a woman. SuperSmashBros. Brawl......I dont care what anyone says that will probably be the best fighting game ever. So yeah i see why people would buy the wii, and just wait for those games.....THen again i agree Wii play wasnt a good game in my opinion, i have it, but i dont really play it much, i bet people Buy it for the Wii-Mote. Last but not least GO NINTENDO, im backing you the entire way.
