CCP finally takes wraps off its vampire-centric massively multiplayer project, after years in the works, which will reportedly have sandbox gameplay and social interaction.
With True Blood getting solid ratings and the Twilight films blowing up the box office, vampires are a hot commodity these days. So hot, in fact, that the undead trend is now spawning a massively multiplayer online game based on White Wolf's popular supernatural role-playing game franchise, World of Darkness. The game is in development at CCP Games, developer and publisher of the sci-fi MMORPG Eve Online, which merged with White Wolf in 2006.
According to a report and video (see below) on the MMORPG blog Ardwulf's Lair, CCP used White Wolf's annual Grand Masquerade event in New Orleans to unveil the new game. Slated for release sometime after 2012, the game is also now officially listed on CCP's Web site along with some early concept art similar to that found in the trailer.
Though CCP reps were unable to comment on the Ardwulf's Lair report as of press time, the blog did report some details from the Grand Masquerade presentation. Titled World of Darkness Online, the game will be a sandbox-style MMORPG with an emphasis on social interaction and "player politics." It will not arrive before the year 2012 and will be largely based on the older version of World of Darkness, Vampire: The Masquerade.
[UPDATE] CCP reps confirmed the title is actually simply "World of Darkness" but would not reveal any other details about the game.
World of Darkness will be the third video game based on White Wolf's horror RPG series, following 2000's Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption and 2004's Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. According to Ardwulf's Lair, it will let gamers play only as vampires initially, not their werewolf foes.
@Abd_Alhazred considering how entertaining it was for Alliance vs. the Horde in WoW (which became very successful), I like the idea of the camerilla, anarchs, and sabbat.
CCP is one of the rare few game developers that I have any faith in these days. Solid company full of talented people and all in-house software plus a taste for making RPGs of old with more sandbox styled game play. Can't wait for this. Guess I'll go dig up my old Vampire: Masquerade disc from storage...
Can't wait to kill the first "Edward" named twitard character with my insane Malkavian. AHHAHAHAAAA!!! Oh the voices, you never feel alone with them.
Considering that CCP is making it, it can become awesome ( they have already proved that with EVE online). I can't wait for it's release (and start out with a Tremere heheh) , although since I am also an EVE player, I will find it hard to divide my time between these two..
I wouldn't mind paying a small monthly fee if this turns out to be a masterpiece. However, I do wish a sequel to Bloodlines was made, I don't have all that much time for MMO's anymore :/
Sabbat will most likely be playable. This is a link to one of the maindevelopers blogs and his comments and impressions from the grand masquerade forum that concerned the World of Darkness mmorpg. http://www.justinachilli.com/journal/2010/9/27/after-the-grand-masquerade.html#comments
omg I can't believe :D:D. I cried when I watched this video. too bad it's not gonna come out soon :(
I'm hoping players can play as the Lasombra clan because you can't get much more anti Twilight sparkling faux vampire than the shadow controlling Lasombra...-=x
Real vampires don't sparkle in the sun... Hopefully it isn't just another grind fest like most MMORPG's
@HufflePuff-TLH The World of Darkness was created in 1991, so, yeah, they were the originals. Look in to things before you flame.
@Reiken37 You have obviously never played Vampire: The Masquerade. If you had, you would know that this isn't the same BS that little girls drool over. This is serious business.
OMG! I can't believe my eyes! The World of Darkness (as in, the world, the atmosphere, the mythos where the games take place) is back!?! Wohooo! Now, I really hope it's free to play, otherwise I'm gonna feel a bit disappointed. Also, I hope other normal RPGs are on their way as well.
I hope someone slapped baldy on the head for distracting me. If this game actually makes it more than a year I will lick his scalp.
Wow!.....wasn't sure if they would ever announce this game!......Been waiting years all other mmo's be ************
Something tells me there will be a special 'Glitter' ability if you play the 'Wannabe Vampire' class.
Intrigued by the sandbox aspect (which sounds good) but not sure about the subject matter. Will keep an eye on it and hope for the best.
sandbox mmorpg + vampire the mascarade theme = win finally something fresh.. I'm sick of the same theme park mmos with different flavors (conan, star wars, super heroes..) and by the time this comes out Twilight fans will be grown ups lol
Oh and all you WoD fans, Eve, CCP's other MMORPG, does not charge you for expansions, they are free updates. I expect the same business model here, so if/when they introduce Werewolves/Mages/Whatever, then you will get that for free. CCP does a lot of things right. It does some things wrong, corrupt Devs in player guilds cheating, but their design models are ingenious.
If CCP is making it, then expect it to be dark, sadistic, and evil. So all the things that make Eve a great MMORPG. Never played WoD before, but the theme is interesting. Definitely interested in this MMORPG, because it definitely won't be a WoW clone.
Hm. Firstly, glad they're basing it on the 'old' WoD, pre-Gehenna. I used to do a fair bit of White Wolf RPGing back in the day, and from everything I've read they found it a bit tricky to reboot everything. It's going to be very interesting to see how they're approaching this. Politicking is everything in Kindred society, but I'd guess the only MMORPG to really feature it at the moment is Eve Online. Will it be possible, for example, for players to be Primogen or even Prince of a city? Of course, we can probably also look forward to Sabbat Invasion events where players get to roll an alt fresh from the grave and run about raising as much hell as possible before they get burned :)
@Taffelost The difference is, the term "World of Darkness" (as a tabletop RPG) was made about 20 years ago. So they aren't copying WoW.
I'm just worried that it'll become like WoW with that there are too many people in the cities and you go out into the counteryside. still it's better than nothing. buying without a doubt. Bloodlines is one of the best games in history and it deserves a follow up
Well sandbox games are always fun to play. If we get a GTA IV version but with vampires then this will be lots of fun. Or why not a Red Dead Redemption version? Still loads of time till this is anyware near done but thay have my interest. So far anyway... But i think that SW TOR will take alot of peopel and WoW the rest due to the expansion.
Dudes who sparkle in the sunlight and drink fake blood aren't vampires -- vampires were a hot commodity ten years ago and the only problem I have with this game is the inevitable and misguided comparisons with the faux vampire mainstream obsession. Lets just hope this will come out and show them how to do it right.
Finally after six years! I thought this idea was dead in the water. I'm in the minority who isn't pleased that it's being developed by CCP but I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun if done properly. Werewolves will probably end up as an expansion if EVE is any indication.. then Wizrards, Changelings, ect. I am especially pleased however that it will be based on the oWoD. EDIT: Also, as a point of opinion. Don't attribute the True Blood "cool vamp" and Twilight "bubblegum vamp" phenomenon as a precursor to a WoD game. White Wolf writes vampires PROPERLY and mentioning them in the same breath or by comparison to the current incarnations in the media is an insult to true fans of the series and this was obviously in development prior to the current trends.
they said WereWolves initially they put in Werewolf the apocalypse as an add on and I am sold...though how would it work in the timeline? Vampire The Masquerade canonically ended in 2004 The Plot about Gehenna and the return of Cain being a major plotline in Bloodlines.
IF you have steam and an XP system totally try Vampires bloodlines. It is totally awsome. The games doesn't work in 7 and I would be very hesitant to try xp emulation with it.
heh vampires vs wolves and eventually the players will get to play as both. Wanna bet there will be a guild called "Team Edward" and another called "Team Jacob"? Twilight online would be a better name for this game lol. Jokes aside, it seems cool.
I've been reading Guillermo Del Toro's "The Strain" recently. I hope the fantasy is more like that in this game; darker and more horrifying. I'm so tired of Twilight ruining vampires.
I'm glad this video is the "HQ" version, or else I wouldn't be able to see how many hair follicles are on that bald guy's head.
@wexorian: i agree bro, i'm getting guild wars 2, but this WOD mmo is coming 2012 bro.. long time for GW2 to get boring
Does "social interaction and player politics" mean that this will be "The Sims" or "Second Life" with vampires?
i'l try demo when it will launch then i'l think if it's good MMo to play. but near future coming 3 MMO, Final fantasy 14, Guild wars 2 and Kotor and alos Wow catachlysm exp, it will be hard to find players :)
