Xbox 360 dashboard updates December 6
Microsoft dates redesigned interface, expanded Kinect voice control support, cloud storage for game saves, and new entertainment apps for Xbox Live users early next month.
The Xbox 360 interface is about to get another makeover. Microsoft today announced that the next free dashboard update for its current console will launch December 6 for all users.
Inspired by Microsoft's "Metro" design used in Windows Phone 7 and the upcoming Windows 8, the new Xbox 360 dashboard includes a range of new features, starting with expanded support for navigation using voice and gesture controls with the Kinect camera. On top of that, the update introduces the new beacon system to facilitate finding friends for gameplay sessions, deeper Facebook integration, and cloud storage for game saves.
Microsoft also noted that the update will bring with it the first wave of new entertainment applications from its TV, sports, music, and movie partners. In October, the console maker confirmed a list of 38 companies that would be bringing their content to Xbox Live beginning this holiday season. Among the big names on the list were US cable TV providers Comcast and Verizon, as well as the BBC, LoveFilm, HBO GO, TMZ, YouTube, and UFC.
Kinect works so well on the update :)
@ ghstbstr You can turn off those notifications in your system settings
Barely anybody uses all these new features they put out for gold members. They got to make a $60 membership with everything gold gets now, then like a $20 membership for just playing online, joining parties, etc.
@darkangel494 I was just talking about the interface and not about the market place or party chat or the whole online experience. I don't understand why Microsoft makes people pay for online when its free on other platforms. Your paying for online and ads, just makes no sense. PC - free online, no ads. PS3 - free online, no ads. I know nothing about the Wii, sorry. Back to my previous post, I just wrote that for fun and to get people annoyed. The XcrossMediaBar has won an award, just Google it, it not that hard. You should try out the PS3s XMB, its very organized and easy to use. The first time I used the Xbox 360 menu I got confused/lost but that was years ago and you guys have gotten upgrades since then. As for the XMB, there has been no upgrades done to it because it works, and its easy to navigate around. I'm not a fanboy, I'm just here to see what the 360 is getting. If this was a Xbox only website then I would never have come here and posted this but its not. This was in the top news section so I read it.
I really hope that with this new dashboard update that we have an option to turn off all and I mean all messages except for achievements. I say this because all I ever want to see is achievements not everytime one of friends is online. That message "friend" is online pop up really bothers the crap out of me.
@BattyOnBench I'm sorry what? The cross menu bar is about as advanced as my gameboy colour. There is still no party chat and never will and to top it off the marketplace is appalling. I am not a fanboy at all but it is quite obvious that for this generation microsoft is miles ahead of the competition for online functionality. I really would like to see what awards the PS3 has won for it's interface though. OT: All I really want from XBL is 1v100 and more games like that! (apologies for any spelling errors. 4AM over here).
COOL
The ps3 interface is still far better and not to mention award winning and with no ads.
... of which zero features will come to Canada, except the new interface look. joy
Looking forward to the update. The current dashboard bothers me. The friends page should be closer to the main page.
Between Windows 8, Windows Phone, Bing, Zune, Windows Store and now the 360, MS is trying to follow Apple in creating an entire "culture" of Microsoft. I love the 360, but this makes me sick. Newsflash: Apple is not someone you want to try and copy. Create your own way of doing things, and stop trying to control every facet of computing. You don't have to have the #1 operating system AND the #1 search engine (bing sucks) AND the #1 music service AND the #1 phone OS just to be successful.
@ Booshon... I'm not sure where you live, but I know that in Mexico, the cable and TV porviders are national.... to many rights to pay for when they import the foreign signal. It'll probably be the same wherever you are, so you just need to decide which TV service gives you what you want. From what I've seen here... I'm keeping my SAT dish.
I pay enuf for the cable tv in my country i dont think i will want to pay for US cable TV too:P
BBC? Do they mean BBC iPlayer?
hope there is an option to mute everyone that uses kinect
Im all for a fresh new update, but if they think for 1 second that im gonna pay to watch any of these services, they can simply ram it!
@shriku2000, Yep, waste of time posting on an article. Any how, can't wait for this update!!
@shriku2000 why the fu** did you click on article and then post a comment ?! what a waste of a life
@TakitusMaximus cool, thanks for the info :)
dont care
does anyone have any idea if our current themes we have will work with this new dashboard?
Is Microsoft going to make voice chat sound even more robotic?
@svaubel Then what would you recommend they do for an update? This is very smart for them, and convenient for many of us, not you included. If a company stays with a single front(games), they will fall very far behind and fail. This isn't the old generation anymore. Integration into other multimedia forms in necessary. Everything must evolve to survive, and that is exactly what they are doing.
Always excited for the dashboard updates, keeps me from going out and buying a new xbox..
I like the cloud storage feature - 'bout time they add something useful for a Gold member.
@ svaubel It's all about making the money. If they say things like popular tv. Ya know people getting into iptv, will think of this. It's all about multimedia now, that's how you kill the competition, by making your machine do everything that other things can only do individually.
Yay more pointless integration of stuff for everything that doesnt deal with games. If i wanted TV, I will watch the damn TV. If I wanted Facebook I will use the computer. M$ used to be about the games, but now they are trying to make the Xbox into everything it didnt start as.
I've had this dashboard for a week or so, shhhhhhhhhh.
I cant wait for this!!!
Looks nice.
Looking forward to it
cant wait!!
the only thing i'm excited about is the cloud storage. i didn't get this feature on my ps3 since you have to be a ps+ member to have it...
For us Canadian's, we get Rogers On Demand through Live now :D
ME LOVE UPDATES!!!!!!
i would be completely happy if they went back to the original dashboard with the blades. that one was the most convenient. now i have to scroll through 4-5 different menus to get some place. too cluttered.
Nice....I'll be waiting in Skyrim until then.
That´s gonna be coooooooll
I wonder if this update makes you have to have a kinect now?
If it's better than the garbage they have now that shouldn't be a problem, I have no problem with something like the Metro design for a 360 dashboard, I'm sure it'll include widgets and a bunch of nifty but mostly useless things. However, Windows 8 with the Metro design? Come on guys! Thank god I use Linux to avoid this forced garbage.
@Mr-Possible No, you'll be able to keep your premium themes.
is there anywhere you can go to check what online tv you will get in your region? So for instance I'm in the UK so I probably won't get HBO or UFC, I think BBC and Five etc are on it which is great but what about channel 4 and ITV?? this should be basic math, if they are providing BBC and 5 the others should be there too... can't wait for the ability to finally search online and youtube will be awesome as I have a youtube channel, does anyone know if people on xbox live will be able to look at your Youtube stuff?
What about our premium themes we have purchased? will they be at all transferable? or will they be the same as when they updated to this one we have now rendering all our previous themes pointless? this wasnt a problem last time but premium themes arn't exactly free this time around.
PS3 where is your dashboard update..comon excite me Sony
My only hope is a new tab that these dance and band game DLC go into. It's more than annoying having to scroll through hundreds of songs and "demos" before I can see what I want. There should be a limit or a seperate section for them games!!
So when Skyrim, Batman, and Gears freeze you can cloud over to your neighbors and verify its not just your Xbox.!
Anyone in US!!! PLEASE, save at least XBOX, BURN facebook servers!!! ...and HQ!!!!!!
I'd comment on it, but I could get into trouble. ;) MS doesn't want testers talking about it.
Xbox 360 is six years old now! (November 22, 2005)
