Xbox Australia exec "unsurprised" about PS3 delay; hints at 360 retail deals this coming holiday season and says he wouldn't be surprised if PS3 lags past revised launch date as well.
Australia's top Xbox executive, Microsoft's David McLean, spoke to GameSpot AU last week and provided his company's perspective on the PlayStation 3 launch delay in territories outside of Japan and the US--specifically, the console's delay from November 2006 to March 2007 in Australia. He said the delay didn't catch him or anyone else at Microsoft by surprise. In fact, McLean brought up the topic of even more delays for Sony's next-gen console.
"[The PS3 delay] doesn't surprise me--and it further wouldn't surprise me if this product wasn't seen in March next year either," McLean said.
"We have always been comfortable with our strategy for Christmas irrespective of Sony. We are completely unsurprised by this situation. We have actually been a little surprised at how surprised other people have been."
McLean hinted that Microsoft would unveil some retail-focused strategies this holiday season to entice gamers who had money saved up for a PS3 to switch to an Xbox 360 instead. McLean was close-mouthed when it came to providing exact details, however.
"We may well look at working with our retail partners to come up with some opportunities to give gamers more choice," he said.
McLean said the only downside for Microsoft with the PS3 delay was that consumers would have to wait longer to finally compare the 360 and the PS3 side-by-side.
"It would have been nice for people to really contrast what the Xbox 360 had to offer versus Sony this Christmas, so the vapourware aspect could go away," he said.
But when it comes to the other next-generation console still expected to reach Australian shores this year--the Nintendo Wii--McLean was more benign. "I actually think the Wii is very innovative. I think it will have an interesting niche market for that controller. I do think that it will lend itself to some new experiences around gameplay--but I also do think that in terms of true power, next-generation content and true digital lifestyle scenarios, the game is still with Xbox 360," he said.
Sony Computer Entertainment Australia declined to comment to GameSpot AU about Microsoft's reaction.

I think Sony will end up losing as many sales due to delays and unavailability as they would have if they had delayed worldwide launch until Spring 2007. The price and delays are a hurdle they will have to overcome with some incredible games or they may have dug a hole that will hurt them in the future

BioShockOwnz: Sorry for the long text but I like to explain things in detail people sometimes misunderstand people what they are trying to say on here I believe 2 issues ago PSM did a huge article on Resistance, it takes place in 1951 where american soliders are sent to englandto fend off the alien invasion and where WWII does not even take place,there is story behind the characters and there seems to be alot of it, like i said huge article on the game it self and characters,and i agree Ipod is a must have for any metrosexual who is on the go as far as MSG i could see who people might be thrown off it I myself love the series and this weekend finally picked up a copy of MSG3 sub and tried it online and it did not like for the fact I was not use to the camera angle and kept getting owned by everyone . Either way every console has its goods once I get my 360 Im getting all 3 halo games once 3 is out ofcourse
To grnidbandit: Insanely huge wall of text, I think I just went blind with all the letters and words. Anyway's I AM buying a PS3 at launch, and a Wii, I already have a 360. I collect and play all games, so my answers are not biased and you seem intelligent and unbiased also. I watched all the Resistance videos and I have only seen 1 video that even hints at the story and that is when the Chimera take over the states, but there has been no cutscenes or anything to hint at a great story, and as much as people like to hate it, Halo is a great series that is a shooter, that also has a good story behind it. I am excited for DMC4, FFXII, maybe Resistance because the Chimera look very impressive in the game, but I am one person who doesn't like the MGS series. I alway's thought the story was rather weird and didn't make much sense, Splinter Cell alway's did it better for me. I know what you're talking about with the iPod, I too bought a white 30GB Video and I thought OMG this is expensive for a portable HDD, but then I thought how much I would save in buying cd's, plus the iPod is a must for any metrosexual guy like me. :)

The thing with EA. they are biggest game company right now I believe, with all the games they have under their umbrella they can afford to make the best looking games on PS3 and the 360. Besides EA has already announced they have a few titles in development for the PS3, I do agree with with comment Kaz made, but I feel as though he should have said people might want to save up more if they want a PS3, I dont know that in Japan people might work extra hours to get the things that they want as opposed to just saving up. Sony has made their fair share of mistakes but not to the point where its starting to look like a 3DO and Sega. It would have been great of they gave us free HDMI cables but I think alot of people did not expect this. IMO HDTV are not that far out into all homes yet, even though HDTV sales are on the rise its the same thing with broadband a few years ago. Sony probably did not want to include 2 sets of cables one for standard tv and one for HD , and from my understanding not all HDTVS have HDMI port in the back. If arrogance is demise? what about MS. Everytime they sell a PC they are making some money off it heck their employee is the worlds richest man, the only thing I can see demise is when companies play with their employees money and end up going bankrupt or have declining sales. Lets take a look now at whos the leader for what. Apple for MP3 players, MS for OS, Sony for gaming, any of these companies maybe not MS for the exception but apple and sony can fall off any day, but its going to take down alot more than not providing HDMI cables or a $200 more price tag than their competitor
For K1LLSWITCH: No Nintendo is actually trying to change the way we interact with our game, the motion sensor in the Wii-mote is better then the PS3 motion sensor, and Nintendo is dedicating there whole console to this change, while Sony just copied off of Microsoft and Nintendo and added it at the last second as a cheap gimmick. A company is only as good as it's last product. Just because the PSone was good and PS2 were good doesn't mean the 3rd times the charms. Sorry but people never thought Nintendo would flop with a system until they saw the Virtual Boy, people never thought Sega would die. But they both happened, and past success is just that........past success. Nothing will drive the system, not even the brand recognition if there is nothing redeeming qualities about this system. It remains a big question mark to mostly everyone in the video game world. Sony is in danger, and that is a fact. If they do not pull it together at TGS then they will be unsuccessful after the initial holiday rush.
all you people are second guessing sony. all of you have a ps2 so get over it. you will pay for the system and thats that. gpu is more effiecient on 360???? they are more likey the same. ps3 is more advanced that is all.
they arent cocky. Sony has just been called on thier ps3 BS. The 360 is as powerful as the ps3. In fact the 360 gpu is better and more effecient then the ps3 gpu. The cell chip is just another hype chip just like the emotion engine, that is going to take an incredible amount of time and money to write for all of the spes. Sony spouted all this bs with their ps2 piece of junk, and they tried it with the ps3, and it has blown up in their face. The playstation name is wearing thin. First people have to shell out 600 dollars so sony can exploit their fan base and push out blue ray. Sony has not kept any of their promises regarding the ps3. MS has bought most of sonys exclusives. Son has what now, um metal gear, and FF. FF is in my book just the madden of japanese rpgs. FFXII is a stinker. I went through 4 ps2s. They all broke on me. Even my ps2 slim. I played dragon quest VIII a few times and that was it. I take care of my stuff too. I call up sony once again, and its a huge circus. They transfer me all over the place, and then once again I am told its my disk. THAT IS BS. It is not my disk, its their crappy hardware. I have had zero problems with any of my MS hardware. My xbox is still clunking along, and I did morrowind at least 1000 hours through the years.
Dont get too cocky now Microsoft , its not like you really scored that many points on your own ... but mostly relied on the missteps of Sony , that are now getting quite numerous . However with still strong franchise on their sides , and not so many monstrous ones on the 360 sides , the balance can still go either way .
Here's the way it will go in the Uk, this Christmas we'll but a wii, then start saving for a HDTV, next Christmas we'll buy a 360, then when Sony drops there price in a year or two, we'll get one of those, maybe, so who cares about some lame delay, we don't want a buggy one yet.

Let's be honest here, a good, AAA PS2 game will outsell anything for quite some time to come, regardless if you're talking about the 360, Wii, PS3, PSP, or DS. Simple numbers - even if a game came out on any of those systems that was outright superior Final Fantasy XII in every way gameplay wise, FFXI on the PS2 would still outsell it simply because there aren't enough people and systems out there to do otherwise. Final Fantasy VII (the best selling FF to date) sold close to 10 million copies - that's only 10% of the PS2 owning population, but double the 360's current installed base (and 10% on the 360 only yields 500,000 games sold). At the game store I worked at that year, those very same people needed to replace their laser eye, or get a new PS2. we tallied within just our customers 12% of the people who bought one from us around that time brought it back after 1.8-2 years, needing a laser eye cleaning/replacement. Anyway, Blue-Ray isn't going to be swept up like DVD was. Blue-ray cost more, is wrong for the majority who don't own HDTVs, Blue-Ray discs contain LESS special features than the 2 disc DVD counterpart. Check it yourself, 'The Fifth Element' at Wal-Mart, both on Blue-Ray and DVD. The DVD is cheaper, has more things to watch, and on my TV looks ******* Amazing with the right shows(PrisonBreak on DVD). Also using CURRENT technology you can easily fit HD stuff on regular DVDs. And also Sony had a similar problem with first-generation PSX's, Laptop batteries, digital cameras, and memory sticks. They really do make shoddy products ~_~ At least for me.
I live in the UK and it looks like it's gonna be easy for me to convince all my friends that are saving up for a PS3 to buy an Xbox 360 and a Wii. They'll still have time to save up for a PS3 again. Looks like Wii60 will prevail (in Europe at least). Even the importers are gonna be thinking twice about PS3 instead of Wii60
delay or not delay, i suppose i will only wait for the dust to settle down before deciding whether to buy the ps3 or not.. as for now, i'll just stick to my 360..
Unlucky for Sony and ickle Sony fanboys out there in Europe. The delay is a downer for people who want to buy a PS3, but good news for 'casual' gamers is that you can spend that well earnt money on both a Wii and a 360. Try out these consoles before Sony Evolves you into a little fanboy. Why do people still think the Wii is not next Gen? Could possibly be due to the fact that the upgraded xbox 1.5 and PS2 1.5 are 'classed' as next gen because they have better graphics...If this was the case then you 'little fanboys' should invest in a PC and just upgrade that every year or so. The Wii is only innovative because of the controller really and thats it, but its a different way to play games and it actually looks 'FUN' im sure you still know what fun means when you play games. So this christmas get the best of both worlds this holiday season, a better graphic based console the xbox 360 and the wii-tastical Wii. Buy both and give them a try for the sake of all gaming.

Everyone knows that the Playstation name alone will drive sales. And if you think that Warhawk is based on gimmicks for the PS3 controller, what do you think about the "Wii-mote"? 90% of their games will utilize the tilt-function. Look at all of Nintendo's conventions so far. Gimmick! As for the HDMI cables not being included in with the console, it's really no big deal. They've never mattered. They are games that are thrown together which gives us something to play until the games that truely interest us come out. Third party titles always draws attention from the gaming public which generate sales for a particular console. The "true" sales are usually accumulated a year after the console is launched, when the third party titles arrive, not at launch day. To step on toes a little, Microsoft doesn't have enough third party titles. That is probably why the Xbox 360 bombed in Japan, and barely keeping afloat here in the states, because Microsoft has nothing that interest them. And as I've stated before Japan is a turning point in any console race.

Once the launch has ended, the winter is over, and summer is here..........how well will a $600 console sell in the dog days of summer? That is the true test. Ofcourse the PS3 will sell out at launch, I know I'll be the first person in line at Best Buy, like I was for the 360. But after launch is over, and the new smell from the PS3 is lost, but the $600 price tag still remains....how well will it sell?

I like how people trash this guys comments, Look it makes sense, It wasnt that hard to beleive that the ps3 would get put back some where and i wouldnt be surprised if it does again, The guys speaking what hes it thinking, Hes going to lie just so people in forums are not going to call him an idiot.
Hints at retail deals my arse. I'm looking for the HD-DVD premium 360 bundle at my local game store. Even if MS doesn't make an official version, I'm willing to bet on seeing one in Gamestop by Black Friday.

Sony had 2 choices emulate MS and release a handful of consoles in each region .. or take the PR hit well before the holiday season so that the disapointment fades before you make a snap buying desision ... hell their anouncing tiny numbers for launch .. they are telling you you will not get a PS3 this year. They are banking on MS selling out and not being able to meet demand too. this is a long game sony have the next 4 years to make up for setbacks now a couple of years ago sony fanboys were constantly saying that the graphic advancement on the Xbox over the ps2 was nothing to boast about ... from everything so far the "leap" between the 360 and the PS3 looks to be simliar to the ps2 v Xbox.... and yet now it's still "ps3 with own the 360" .... these ar ethe same fanboys that were stuck playing PSone games while those in the know owned a dreamcast. my advice .. learn to admit that there are merits to owning each system .. then save your money and buy all three !
Europe is better off not getting it (ps3)until march as we end up being the beta testers. Japan should have gotten all 500k on nov 11, ended up with the crappy ones that roll off the production line 1st and later we could have gotten the ones that wont have a higher than average defect rate and there would be more games at launch. Mgs and dmc4 ff13 and all the rest of the games people want wont be out for a long time maybe xmas 07 if we are lucky.

hey at least they have 500.000 consoles for the US/Japan compared to 300.000 for the xbox360 worldwide.... yea the PS3 is so not going to be marketleader 8S it's going to ship nearly 2million units to the US/Japan in less then a month compared to half a million Xbox360's worldwide...

Hmmm... I agree that it's far from surprising that the PS3 was delayed but I think if it misses it's March '07 deadline it shouldn't be by much. If it missed by more than 2 months I'd be quite shocked, although that's just down here in Aus, I'm quite confident that Europe should hit the target, the only thing that makes me think there could be further delays is that the 360 took a long time to get here so maybe the PS3 will follow suit.

I wonder... What does this say about Sony to purposely ignore Australia and Europe in favor of Japan and the U.S.? Japan is obviously the hotspot for games, moreso than anywhere else in the world, and all companies sell more software and hardware in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world, but that's just a little unfair and disrespectful towards EU and AU. If I lived in either of those places I'd make the biggest stink in the world. Then again, only the foolish will even think about purchasing one of those over-priced POS. Wii and 360 will have the last laugh, esp through this holiday season. If you're smart you'll opt for a Wii and/or a 360. Saved some money for PS3? Get a 360 and you can even get a few games with it (unlike Sonys machine, which you'll get nothing...because you'll be out of money). And yes, Japan is racist and biased towards all American products. Not to mention anyone's products. If it's not made in Japan, it's no good according to them. How narrow minded.

Everyone knows that Japan is a turning point for a console. The one with the most popularity and/or sales in Japan has the market and the lead in any type of console race. That is why Microsoft is continuously trying to gain some ground over there. Unfortunately they keep failing. Why? Maybe the Japanese gamers don't like the content that is being offered, if any. It's understandable since the Xbox brand produces a shallow roster of games as it is. I mean the Xbox 360 is barely staying alive here in the states what makes you think that console will generate any sales elsewhere? Sony on the other hand will generate those sales because of marketing. Something Microsoft lacks greatly. How many commercials do you see on television for the 360? Two. EA's Madden 07 and Dead Rising. They need to do better than that.
