Xbox Live plugs into YouTube, more
Video-sharing site leads list of Xbox 360's new media apps from Verizon FiOS, TMZ, and more; some apps scheduled for December launch still unavailable.
While Microsoft has touted the Xbox 360's Internet-based media options as a cut above its competitors' offerings, the console is just now getting a feature the PlayStation 3 and Wii have had for years: YouTube support.
Microsoft today announced that another round of Kinect-enabled media-centric apps are now available via Xbox Live. US offerings include iHeartRadio, MSNBC.com, TMZ, and Verizon FiOS. Rogers On Demand hits Canada, and the UK gets blinkbox, MSN Video and MUZU.tv. YouTube is also now available in 24 countries worldwide.
Other apps announced as coming in December include UFC, VEVO, Vudu, and Sony Picture's Crackle. CinemaNow, HBO GO, MLB.TV, and Xfinity on Demand are slated for launch in early 2012.
@MOwens9512 Aye but console gaming will survive it even if they arent in the same form as they are today And I know I shouldnt feed the trolls but its just so tempting :(
@penpusher yeah it's pretty sad really. Who would have thought social networks and cell phones would be the biggest threat to console gaming since the horrid game designing of the 80s. And if I were you, I'd do myself a favor and stop entertaining that ignoramus who keeps trolling you cause he is clearly too ignorant to hold an adult conversation with.
Just enjoy the system you prefer. I never seen the point in bashing another system all because you prefer another. Its just weird consoles are for your ENTERTAINMENT, stop acting like they are your children your a sworn to protect.
@RE4GreatesGame Mate, your mating yourself look like an idiot - I dont know how old you are, but your getting pretty worked up over a console you dont own. I have a PS3 and can prove it (Think im Ditchy08), but dont tend to play it as much anymore (will when star hawk comes out) - There is nothing keeping me on there as I find the xbox more entertaining, less buggy (and slow). Killzone 2 did have good graphics (and Uncharted 2 was really good), but deffo wasnt the best (matter of opinion)... I think its really hard to be a graphics wh0re these days as so many games look good. You need to stop banging on your chest and having a huge nerdgasm everytime you mention Sony/PS3. If you were a gamer you would appreciate all games and consoles, you would have alot more fun.
@RE4GreatesGame dude, seriously, go get yourself sorted out ... its really really sad

@penpusher Again you stringing together more lies and infactual information. The ps3 has games which look far better than any on the Xbox 360. Killzone 2 & 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted trilogy, War trilogy (Kratos) etc. Which games come anywhere close to matching the visuals on these games? I see none. Please don't make a fool of yourself by talking about Battlefield 3 (laughs) that looks better on ps3 than the Xbox. Again I have heard rumours you have been sucking on Marcus Fenix's d**k but I cannot comment on these since you are a ingnoramous. I hope you die by getting a lorry run over you because you are living in ignorant bliss.
@MOwens9512 I wouldnt worry about hate, we've all thought it at some point. I dont think its just the 360,the other 2 are heading in that direction as well with various apps that already take them into this territory, even the 3DS has a web browser -shrug- guess they're trying to increase competetivness with the mobile phone and facebook market
I am well prepared for the hate I may (meaning will) get for this question, but I'm going to ask anyway: Is it just me, or is the 360 becoming less of a gaming console? Not saying it's a good or bad thing, but they are putting a lot into the non-gaming and casual gaming formats. A lot of this stuff can be lived without but oh well, it will definitely up the casual market sales. I'm sure Sony will eventually revamp and go this route as well.
Just voicing opinion here (to each their own): I find the latest XBOX dashboard to be the least useful, or even interesting, of all the changes they have made. I now exclusively press the big X and use the 'mini-blades'
@RE4GreatesGame for the record I'm not a "fanboy", I have a brain and all the consoles (and I mean ALL of them) it may have enough muscle to have better visual output one day, but i hate to break the reality to you but, despite owning both consoles, I have yet to see a game that actually looks superior to the offerings of the 360 in any meaningful way :s I'm having a little trouble understanding what planet you might be on atm. "These fanboys that who continue to attack sony", you are the definition of hypocrite because youre doing just that to others. I dont know what your problem is but dude get over it, its a bit sad really. Besides this is a new article about the youtube app, you want to start a fanboy war go to system wars or even youtube, they like this sort of thing there
@penpusher "as evidenced by the few that have such an output". You couldn't have made my point clearer. I hope this is reality check for all of these fanboys who continue to attack and persecute Sony. My point, the ps3 has the better visual output, is a slap in the face for all Xbox fanboys. I hope you can swallow this just like your morning breakfast because the ps3 will always the more powerful console, both visually and technologically. It's a shame for you because no matter what lies you string together you cannot to avert the truth. This is why bitter and miserable people are the worst kind indeed. Ps3 rocks!
@Midnightshade29 You sound really mad and bitter? Was an xbox thrown at you the last time you had a fanboy rant or something? Im only messing, but seriously - Do you even know why the PS3 was free, then went PS+ down the line? When a company is getting spammed on the market, they sometimes introduced gimmicks like that so loyalists like yourself will make up for loss's. The PS3 came out a year later free to play not for you, but so that it would sell well as millions of people were paying for xbox live already. I have a PS3 and I love it, but I do play xbox more as its well put together, and I can afford the 4 quid a month. No-one was bothered about the browsers/youtube ect because thats what we had PC's for - The only people who kick up a fuss about the xbox not having that trivial stuff in the first place was PS3 elite'ists. As for exclusives n that go, im happy with what the xbox has, and the fact that the live has (next to the PC) best selection of arcade and Indie games is a huge bonus. Dont hate, participate :)
Youtube is pretty crappy. Doesn't even allow you to view comments. my phone is better at viewing youtube vids to be honest.
@RE4GreatesGame "if thats hard to grasp" i never have understood why fan boys have this need to be patronising and insulting forno particular reason. And I didnt say that all games are "compatible" with 1080p, because the majority are indeed 720p on account of limited storage space, but the 360 is capable of outputting 1080p visuals as evidenced by the few that have such an output. (check the net for examples,i cant name them off the top of my head atm)
wow xboxers are happy to have things that have been on pc and ps3 for years? who would of thought? The funny thing is some of you think it's free., its' not. Stuff like vudu and such you have to pay a subscription fee for...so lets see, thats $60 for live, $60 a month for interenet access and the cost of $5.00 a movie...yeah thats not free!!! Oh and stuff like Youtube you need a Gold Account to even use. You don't have to pay for any of this stuff on PS3 or PC.. And they have browsers...ms doesn't want a browser then it couldn't trick the droves of trend following sheep that they are doing something good for you. Xbox live is a rip, and they have a lack of core exclusives. Some of you may say, who cares....well when you can get all the games on 360 on other platforms and more games and these services and not have to pay, you do the math.
PS3's been playing YouTube vids for a long time. :P

All you Xbox fanboys can give me 100 thumbsdown... it only shows how stubborn and ignorant you are of the facts. I mean I wouldn't disagree with some of the advantages the Xbox has over the ps3... so why give me thumbsdown when the truth is told? ps3 rocks! Live with it.
@penpusher Only some games are compatible for 1080p HD on the Xbox 360 Slim. If you still find that hard to grasp then check the official output details. Only the ps3 has the ability to play Full HD for EVERY GAME! Ps3 rocks!
I gots to wonder....why? Do we need youtube on the 360? Seriously?
@RE4GreatesGame actually its perfectly capable of playing 1080p games with no problems,,,its just the dvd thats the issue
People talk about watching youtube or films on 1080p HD but the Xbox can't play majority of games on 1080p HD. The ps3 is still the graphics king.
nice touch to the 360 but you can do it for free on your phone, computer or laptop.....just saying...........
The YouTube function is incredible, it along with Zune Music has completely blown away all expectations I had of how this would work on a console.
@spoonybard-hahs I realize that you have to download the apps, but not only have they made for a cluttered Xbox menu (Which, off subject, I'm not to big a fan of the new incarnation.), I'm pretty sure the reason rates were jack up not to long ago was because of the additional media content. Call me old fashion, boring, or behind the times, but If I could chose, none of these apps would be offered on my Xbox. ;)
@Hvac0120 I would imagine it to be some sort of protection against piracy or hacking or something. A control mechanism for security or profit.
You know... adding a browser to the device would have solved all of this a long time ago... I understand dedicated apps can be better, but look no further from the king of apps, iOS to see that a browser is still an important feature. I guess it comes down to the idea of "if you can't do it right, don't do it all" for Microsoft. IE10 (from Windows Developer Preview [windows 8]) could be implemented on Xbox. Too bad it will be too later to make an impact on Xbox 360... maybe Xbox 1080?
I just watched the entire HBO Spawn and Dragon Ball Z episodes 1080p on Youtube. Loving it so far.
The YouTube app is pretty broken. There's often a bug that stops basic scrolling and selecting from working, giving you only the option to press B and leave the app. Also, there's no option to watch a video in any sort of letterboxed or windowed view, the only option is full screen. No, I don't want to blow up a 240p video onto a 1080p monitor.
I'll care when M$ actually includes any of it. So far, we have only received the worst dashboard update ever.
one of these consoles really need to include blipTV
do you have to have a Gold subscription to do this? If so does that mean you have to pay for YouTube? LOL
they need to make xboxlive free.... that will get them more people than any of these features...
Lol live tv wasnt a feature on ps3...and also the YouTube on Xbox is wayyyyyy better....the hd channel are super clear then the actual cable box hd
youtube on xbox is so good! really. Better than on a pc. and its always in hd :) truly awesome!thanks ms,10 out of 10
The only one im interested in is Vudu, now... how the hell do you turn off these stupid beacon alerts...
@CptRexKramer With the exception of the Zune marketplace, all of those are apps that you have a choice to download. There isn't an automatic update that forces this all down your throat.
I'm not sure what everyone's upset about, but I'll take any free content Microsoft wants to give me. Now I can check Youtube for game vids and walkthoughs and then go straight back to the game.
Wouldn't it be vastly more simple if they just added an IE9 browser catered for live? Even if it is IE, it'd still be better than the PS3's browser.
@DitchyJ Well said.
"exclusives blah blah" "should be like PSN blah blah"...jesus, do any of you complaining actually go outside? I try not to hate on fanboys or gamers who are mega picky and seem to want everything thrown at them as you all lurk in a dark corner - farting into a fan, but come on..how can you not be happy with new features that are free and the amount of games being released. The fact that your whining about "lack of exclusives" is beyond me as there are sooo many good games that have come out...they might not all be console exclusives but the only reason you would whine is because you want to bang on your pastey or man-boobed chest and scream "my dad is bigger than your dad" like some sort of wet clayed elite'ist. Obviously your view is going to be different and im probably the evil dark lord who is wrong...just sooo wrong in your eyes, but seriously, just go out to a pub, have a pint and think about what your actually whining about. I have both consoles, and have no mega dramas with any of them, and will defend both...but I can say that the PS3 is not better and does not have better exclusives (both consoles are great), so fanboys go to bed.
maybe start with offering indie games for european costumers ..
Adding all these features to a gaming console is just icing on an already generously layered cake. That isn't a complaint, I think its cool that they're packing more entertainment into consoles, and while it isn't drawing any interest in me, personally, I can see how many consumers would see this as a boon - even those that never use such features anyway, lets be honest. Its like: "Oh cool i can watch MSNBC on 360. I'll buy one!" **plays skyrim, GoW3 and CoD for the next 5 years, never glancing at media apps** Those too fat to walk to their PC to watch cat videos on youtube between gaming breaks may benefit from this, but all jokes aside, packing all this extra stuff into consoles isn't going to take away the need for desktops, smartphones and fridges with touch screen panels that allow me to order milk. Its just yet more devices accessing yet more of the same content. Accessibility is convenience any way you look at it.
I see much people complaining here? Why? Im getting much more for my money now with this applications. Allright some of them are even freeo n the net but who cares? I can see it right now on my big television without plugging in my laptop on it.
@jedediahpelland Use ps3 browser. Access to youtube and everything else on the internets. Always has been.
True, MS should be like Sony, giving gamers real GAMES.. This youtube and iOs thing is cool, but sorry man, its too late.. I want to use my PS3/360 for gaming.. other than that, I could just use my PC

I miss the days when home gaming consoles just play games. These days our gaming consoles are bombarded with unnecessary applications and advertisements. Xbox and PS3 owners don't need that online crap. We already have our Desktops and Laptops for that.
