"Massive facelift" coming to Microsoft’s Xbox Web site on Oct. 20; browser-based Avatar editor, updated marketplace search, Web games among list of changes and additions.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has been the top-selling console for months now, most recently pushing 484,000 units in September. Next month, the company will launch its motion-tracking Kinect technology behind a $500 million marketing blitz. Now, Microsoft’s efforts are aimed at its all things Xbox Web site.
According to Xbox Live’s programming director Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, tomorrow Xbox.com will receive a "massive facelift." The site will receive an entirely new layout and will be updated with a host of new features.
The update will roll out starting tomorrow at 0500 ET/0200 PT/0900 GMT, at which point the Web site and its forums will be down for a "short" period of time. When the site returns, it will be updated with a browser-based Avatar editor, where users can try on virtual clothing items prior to purchase. Also added to the site will be a section where users can play Web games with Xbox Live friends. A list of titles was not provided.
Also arriving with the Web site update tomorrow will be the addition of a "more powerful" search function, where users will be able to search for marketplace items in "more intuitive" ways. Again, specifics were not provided.
For parents, the new site will offer improved reporting tools. According to Major Nelson, this means users will be able to "understand what your family is doing and how they are using [Xbox] Live."
For a full list of changes coming to the Xbox.com Web site tomorrow, including a Flickr stream of images, check out the blog of Major Nelson.
I dont really know why people are slating the new dashboard? i got the update earlier today and i think it is much better! it is much more smoother looking and performs much better! all this is brought in line with the look of Windows 7 and Windows 7 mobile phones that will have xbox live compatability... in short it is windows dominating all forms of media and making sure it is all uniform!!!
The new layout of xbox.com is absolutely awful, there was nothing wrong with the old one. Bring back the old layout!
Maybe we'll actually be able to cancel our live membership online now then, instead of getting us (UK people) to call and waste half an hour.
I wish they'd redesign the NXE so my system didn't start on their retail page and the games on my HDD didn't load after their retail stuff loaded up in the panels behind it first. I average at least 40 seconds before I can even see the games on my console, let alone start one of them up. What a shame they care more about selling me DLC I (and apparently 94% of us) will never buy as well as avatar junk rather than quality and allowing me to freakin' start my game.
It definitely needs a face lift. I hope it's faster as well. It was hard trying to find some things on this old site.
Thank God. The Xbox site has needed a new facelift for a while now. It it's anything like the new dash then it should be much better. :) The web game feature sounds interesting.
thank goodness. the newest one(now) Was clunky. plus i guess we can blame the site crashing is the new updates and stuff. either way i hope they make this one easier to buy games via arcade easier. it took me a long time to find final fight one day sitting in class. i just wanted to buy it and it took ages! either way i am looking forward to it
this is very good, I love the site to chat with friendlist. I just hope they will let us whrite more than 250 caracteres in text message.thats killing me.
If they improve the marketplace search that would be worth it. With all the resources Microsoft has, the marketplace search currently seems to use exact character matching only and is a terrible search
finally i hate that glitch were you go to sign in and it takes you to sign up for a new 360 account!
Looking forward to it. I love how Microsoft never rests on it's laurels. It has the best video game console, the best online service and more, yet the continue to strive for a better user experience! Kudos!
Finally...that site has been taking forever to load sometimes and has really been a eyesore for a long time. About time they did something about it.
I wish you could play your arcade games on your pc. That way I could work on my gamerscore at work lol.
Playing Xbox One games on somebody else's console will also require a check-in every hour. Full Story
