Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch User Review
- Difficulty:
- Just Right
- Time Spent:
- 20 to 40 Hours
- The Bottom Line:
- "Instant classic"
If you like either of the following you'll like Ni no Kuni, Classic Japanese RPGS and/or movies by Studio Ghibli. (Anime, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Ponyo, The Cat Returns etc.) Do you like Pokémon? (The Games) Final Fantasy? Then perhaps this is for you.
It's a little childish perhaps from its looks and maybe that'll put people off, but anyone who has seen a Studio Ghibli movie should be able to instantly click with their style as was the case for me having been a fan of the above mentioned things, there is as ever a little charm about this studio, which becomes noteworthy after having seen their work. I find myself looking forward to the next cut-scene every time, especially the fully animated movie style cut-scenes as they are just a joy to watch! There's plenty of humour to keep you entertained too, lots of little puns and so on.
Be ready to grind, be willing to explore and hunt for the best items/creatures because this is expected of you. The visuals are stunning, the music is masterful (As expected of Joe Hisaishi) I love the game, I've just finished the game with about 36 hours playtime... I think I may have spent way too much time levelling up my Familiars, but hey! I loved it.
When they said they were bringing this game over to the West, I was very excited to know they left the original Japanese audio and added subtitles (The purist way of watching Anime), I usually hate English voice dubs, however with the added option of switching the audio to the English/Japanese voice acting, I had to give it a try in English, to my surprise, especially of the character Drippy I feel the Audio is best appreciated in ENGLISH! Surprise surprise. Mainly because the character is rather Welsh! lol, reading and hearing him speak the way he's suppose to speak is just awesome. I played a short while in Japanese and even though the voice acting is awesome in Japanese, I feel for Drippy alone, the English voice overs are worth it!
There is a demo on PSN store if still in doubt. I advise trying it. I feel that this is a must own game for any PS3 owner!

There is a lot going for this game, but it has a few key missing pieces that I just can't forgive it for.

With flavors of Pokemon, Studio Ghibli & old school JRPGs, Ni No Kuni is a very fine meal indeed.
