It's not really explained in the game. I can usually get a B rank but i struggle to get anything more.

Can someone explain how the scoring system works?

While there is no guarantee outside of practice, I can give some advice.

Before joining up with NiGHTS, try to collect 20 orbs while avoiding the alarm clock that's chasing you as either Elliot, or Claire. Next, acquire the trapped ideya, but do not return to NiGHTS' holding area at the beginning, (This is a general mistake made by most new players) fly over it to start a new lap. All the time that you have left over is used to build up points, best done by making long chains; gathering orbs, stars, and anything else that can contribute to your bonus run. To do this fast and effectively, repetition, and replay will help with memorization of the dream course layouts.

Hope this helps. Also, boss battles act as a bonus multiplier for your overall score, so try to finish them as quick as possible.

In short, use as much of the timer as possible.

Someone might be able to describe it better, but for me, it boils down to this: after destroying the Ideya Capture, go back through the stage as many times as possible, focusing on the areas where you can manage a high amount of links. If a course has Stunt Ribbons, you can easily, easily abuse them for high scores, even by simply button-mashing tricks.

Memorizing and learning the courses will greatly increase your score, just because you'll have a better idea of when and where to focus. A few run-throughs should also help you get an idea of how many points are required for a course and what to aim for, just by seeing your score upon completion and what your rank is.

The second part of that is mastering the bosses for a high multiplier at the end.

How did I lie? Collect 20 orbs, then go join up with NiGHTS. You can only retrieve the ideya as the flying jester, not as the kids. Perhaps I should have worded that better, but I was under the impression you would know only NiGHTS can fly, and gather the ideya. Returning to NiGHTS' holding area too soon ends that course for the level before you can build up your score, but you still have to return there before the timer completely expires or else you get a failing grade. O.o

I know what you meant, because that is what I do sometimes. However, Willy, I can see the confusion with your first post. You say: 'Before joining up with NiGHTS, try to collect 20 orbs while avoiding the alarm clock that's chasing you as either Elliot, or Claire. Next, acquire the trapped ideya, but do not return to NiGHTS' holding area at the beginning' It is the second part that causes confusion. It makes it sound like you're saying to collect the orbs, then get the ideal, then go to Nights, when you obviously meant (because it was stated in your next post) that you collect 20 orbs as the children, then go to Nights, then collect the ideal, which would give you a huge time bonus and score.

You actually CAN get the ideya as the kids. I've done it before. You just need to triple jump.
  • Oct 8, 2012 5:18 am GMT
Well, I'll be damned. You can collect the ideya as the children! Thanks for that tip, KasumiQ. Never knew that was possible until I just tried that out. Unfortunately, for the first course in that level, you're given the grade of "F" or "E" (depending the score you have at the time) when you go up to NiGHTS, and transform. BrettVault, if that was what you were referencing to, I'm sorry that happened, and should have made myself clearer.

As for my previous statement, I apologize for the confusion, but I do hope that bit of information along with ShinChuck helps. You're right Vyse, it seems I should have mentioned that the player needs to return to NiGHTS before trying to aquire the ideya. That bit was so much an automatic process for me, that it failed to come to memory as I was typing/explaining.
