If you are doing a karma run the "cheese" it way gives you a huge amount of karma points because you can get the 50 UT's and beat the encounter timer.
Or you could do it Balbaid's way ; )
http://www.iberiansngrealm.com/Videos/ngb/balbaid/Balbaids.NGB.MN.Archive%20Challenge.wmv
There are about a half dozen vids for the Archive Challenge over at IW's, with most of them being OLB. Kyoiori, JTB, Psaran among others show it being done with a variety of weapons from the DS to Lunar to Flails. Stringing together Flails UT's really gets the job done quickly.
I also checked out NinjaArchives, and TGD's no-hurt run is absolutely amazing. A huge source of inspiration for my OLB run. I have just backtracked up the Underground to upgrade my Flails and go do the AC - I want to be able to restock inventory if need be prior to Alma. I have a feeling I will need my Talisman (or two) for that fight. - May 23, 2012 6:12 am GMTDon't forget to stock up "before" you leave the catacombs....No Muramasa just before Alma (the door is locked).
I always upgrade the Flails before I do the catacombs challenge. Only takes a couple minutes to run all the way back to muramasa's. - May 23, 2012 10:55 am GMTXgArrancar posted...
Goddamn, i have never seen a video put the Flying Swallow and shuriken to such good use like that.
Yeah, he's not bad, eh?

My jaw dropped at 1:30, that free-form combo was SO sexy.
The times he took hits can be accounted for him just wanting to stay aggressive, but 3:15 was what i was getting at. It was a PERFECT opportunity to do a OL gleaming blade, which he clearly tried to do, but he gets intercepted by an off-screen bast fiend. The camera really screws you over in tight spaced encounters.

Eh, the mistake is thinking a player that good can't make mistakes. It's how you deal with them that make or break a run.

"The act of treachery is an art, but the traitor himself is a piece of ****." - Mike Tyson - May 30, 2012 6:08 am GMTWow - Archive Challenge is frustrating. I am trying to get it done on the 1F, alternating DS ID's by chaining VF UT's until essence runs dry. I initially thought I could make it without using my Talisman but at this point I would be happy to simply clear it. 82 is my best run so far, and that's using everything including the kitchen sink.
Might have to resort to cheesing or downright bypassing any FC I arbitrarily deem more frustration than it's worth - I'm looking at YOU Stadium and Great Bridge! - May 30, 2012 7:16 am GMTWell, I don't wanna see this board die either, so there.
Beat Very Hard mode today and started Master Ninja mode right afterwards. I'm now in chapter 2. I've decided I need a break now, because I've been playing too long today.
I already beat NGS1, NG2 and NGS2 on MNM (plus Chapter Challenge in NGS2), so I should be able to beat this. I've tried NG3 on MNM as well, but damn, this one is hard for the wrong reasons (lag and unresponsiveness).
I also started a run (Normal mode) in Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword recently, but eventually I was itching for NGB, so I stopped playing halfway through. Gonna finish it some day and maybe play Master Ninja and Master Kunoichi modes in that one as well.
Afterwards... well, there's still the arcade game included in NGB and the NES games in NG1. I guess I could try to beat all modes in NG1 as well (never got the Hurricane Packs).
Btw, are those the original NES games or the SNES versions in NG1? And what's the difference anyway?

The Stadium Challenge is easier than the Archive Challenge, imo. As you know there is the "cheese" it way and the "to-to-toe" way for the Stadium Challenge also.
For me, the Great Bridge Challenge is the hardest. There is no "cheese" it way that I know of and it is just gruelling.
I didn't get to play over the weekend so I am still at Alma.

Chapter 1 MN is arguably the hardest Chapter.
Unfortunately, Xbox removed the Hurricane Packs in April 2011 (or 2010) so you can't get them anymore. From what I understand, NGB incorporated most of what was in the Packs except Intercept (which I understand was really fun to use)
Not sure on the Easter Eggs. The Original NG had 3 you could unlock, NGB only had 1. I could be mistaken. Bet Smeech8000 knows the answer. - May 30, 2012 2:06 pm GMTYeah, chapter 1 on MNM is quite a pain in the ass. Once you reach the save statue it's not quite as hard anymore since there are bats close by which you can farm for blue essence. But everything before that leaves little room for error. Especially since it's recommended to pick up all Elixirs but not use them before Murai.
I read about the Hurricane Packs not being available anymore. I guess it's not a big deal, because I have both NG1 and NGB. Though I'm wondering about the Intercept... in NGS1 when I fought the Knightmares I blocked, waited for them to strike and immediately retaliated. But in NGB this doesn't seem to work. Is that what Intercept does? If so, does that mean NGS1 has it by default? Or is that just Counter Attack working differently in both games? Maybe I've only been doing it wrong. After all, it has been a year since I played NGS1.
And yes, NG1 has the (S)NES trilogy (which won't work on a 360, so I picked up an original XBox just for completion's sake, lol) while NGB has the arcade game. IIRC I read somewhere that the difference between the NES and SNES versions is that the latter has additional checkpoints. Not sure if there are more differences.

I can't say for certain since I've never played NGS, but I believe the Intercept was exclusive to the HP's on NGO. You're statement ...I blocked, waited for them to strike and immediately retaliated. leads me to believe that you simply executed a Counter Attack, which is done by hitting X or Y while (already) blocking just as the attack lands. By contrast, the Intercept was executed by blocking the instant the attack landed. Here is the language from the Technique Scroll:
The technique lets you execute an action immediately after blocking an attack. It’s an advanced technique that, if executed successfully, will increase your Karma score. While the enemy is attacking use split-second reflexes to block and guard yourself. If successful, immediately execute your next action when the lightning is flashing. Also, when the Intercept method is used with Y, the Ultimate Technique will be unleashed instantly.
In addition to granting a Karma bonus (1000 per until time runs out, ala ET/UT's) the move is capable of being performed on projectile attacks, which makes it even more OP. I remember Bigalski had a HP commentary walkthrough on Youtube back in the day but I believe he has taken it down : (
The SNES NG trilogy is available only on NGO. They are received individually via the following:
- NG - Find all 50 scarabs and return to Muramasa.
- NG2 - Obtain NG and proceed to shoot the clockface on the clock tower in Tairon. I believe this must be done from the platform immediately beneath it (where you likely first encounter Black Spider Ninja and find the Spirit of the Devils).
- NG3 - Obtain NG2 and Flying Bird Flip to the top of the column in the Peristyle Passage that is open; it is the one immediately to the right as you enter the Passage; this is a great safe spot for the mission (NGB) where you face two clones simultaneously (BotA 5?) since you can equip Tranquility and camp out to let your health recharge.
Although technically possible (since all locations cited above are accessible after returning the 50th scarab), I can't remember if all 3 may be obtained in a single playthrough. You may have to do a New Game + or Continuous Play or whatever the game calls it.
Additionally, I have heard that the sound is greatly inferior to that of the original NES iterations, but other than that it is a great way to revisit the original versions seeing as that SNES cart was one of the rarest ever produced for the console. - May 31, 2012 7:01 am GMTSorry. I never played with intercept. From various threads on the topic back in the day, everyone said it was fun.
We all call the Knightmares "Berserkers"....but I'm pretty sure they are the same thing. You can fight the Berzerkers the way you describe, but you have to be using the Dabhilaro or the Unlaboured Flawlessness. You hold block and when he attacks you have to hit X just as he connects with your block. This initiate a counter attack on the Berzerker. I can't do it consistently myself so I use a couple different techniques for fighting them. - May 31, 2012 9:00 am GMTI can't say for certain since I've never played NGS, but I believe the Intercept was exclusive to the HP's on NGO. Thanks for the clarification. Like I said, it has been a year since I played NGS on MNM and now it's coming back to me. Yes, it must have been the Counter Attack. I wasn't able to pull it off properly in my NGB VH run and therefore I got confused and thought NGS had Intercept after all. Thanks again, I'll keep it in mind for my current run.

I actually already unlocked the SNES trilogy on both my 360 (where it doesn't work) and on my XBox (where it does) last year, I just haven't gotten around to playing them yet. Sorry, I should have mentioned that. And yes, it is possible to pick up all three cartridges in one single playthrough.
- NG2 - Obtain NG and proceed to shoot the clockface on the clock tower in Tairon. I believe this must be done from the platform immediately beneath it (where you likely first encounter Black Spider Ninja and find the Spirit of the Devils).
I believe I shot the clockface from the platform above the door leading to Pleasure Street. It's that platform with the lever that opens the door. But yeah, it was a bit confusing at first. I read a guide that merely said "shoot the clockface" but didn't mention that it only works in certain locations.
We all call the Knightmares "Berserkers"....but I'm pretty sure they are the same thing.
Oh, those are the Berserkers. It seems every guide has a different name for them. Some say "Knightmares", some say "Hell Knights". I saw the name "Berserkers" in some other guide and thought it was referring to the Ogres (either size).
Anyway, I think I'm making decent progress in my MNM run. Just defeated Alma. I remember struggling with her in my NGS VH/MNM runs, but now I defeated her on my second try. Kinda funny how you adapt to the game. In my very first run through NGS (which was the first time I ever played any NG game) I was struggling despite being on Normal mode and thought I would never beat the game on a higher difficulty mode. But then I started a run on Hard mode just for the **** of it and was surprised how much easier the game was.
However, the Archive Fiend Challenge never got any easier. I'm glad I managed to beat it today. I was thinking about skipping it after one too many Game Over screens, but I wanted that SotD item. Somehow I even managed to beat it within the time limit, althought I'm not playing MNM for Karma; I just wanna beat it. Lol, you guys are on an entirely different skill level than me.

I might know more "tricks", maybe.

I would recommend DLing the NES roms and playing them on an emulator with a gamepad. The NES versions are better.
If you don't have a gamepad, well... I beat NG1 NES on an emu without save states on the keyboard, but... I would guess that few have that patience/resolve. It was brutal.

Made it to the labyrinth. The end is in sight now. I can do this. I can beat this son of a *****. Though I gotta say Black's MNM is definitely harder than Sigma's. Not too much harder, but hard enough that you notice it.

Now you should finish off the missions if you haven't already done so. I would also recommend doing some weapon runs.
- Jun 3, 2012 11:58 pm GMTHah, no way. I don't like mission modes in any games and NGB is no exception. It's nice to have in case I ever want to practice on something, though. I do want to beat Eternal Legends, but I don't want to have to burn through tons of other missions first.
Starting the arcade game now and I guess I will play the original NES trilogy afterwards.

The thrill seeker comes from all walks of life. Comes from the home. The home where the parents are too busy to train their children respect. Respect! MWAHAHAHA - Jun 4, 2012 6:02 am GMTMy bad. You can't really do weapon runs in NGB. You can do handicap runs, however.
It is not that bad unlocking the next series of missions. I think you only have to beat the row on normal for the next row to unlock. I'm not sure, maybe you only have to play them. Seems like a row would unlock before I thought it would, sometimes.
The majority of the missions are fun. A couple of the Military Destruction missions are just awful. Fighting Nichae and Ishtaros at the same time........insane (but fun). - Jun 4, 2012 7:54 am GMTMissions work like this:
1) You can't have more than 10 unfinished missions playable at any time. Once you get your total uncompleted missions down to 5, a new row opens up.
2) Missions are deemed "complete" after they are finished on Normal (since that is the only difficulty available the first time through).
3) After completing a mission on Normal, the option to play it on Hard becomes available, and so on. Completing a mission on a higher difficulty does not count as completing an additional mission for point #1 above.
By this rationale, it is possible to unlock Eternal Legend without even touching Giants of the Underworld. Unfortunately you are forced to complete at least one 2-on-1 encounter to get to EL. Battlefield of the Abyss pits you against the Dabi and Lunar Fiend Ryus in the Peristyle Passage. It might be easier to wall-spam your way through the Doku-Alma GotU mission.
