Guy Cocker Twitter feed sparks controver ...
An Eidos UK PR firm has told press that they are not to publish Tomb Raider: Underworld reviews that are rated 80% or lower until this coming Monday. GSUK's very own Guy Cocker posted the following on his Twitter account two days ago "call from Eidos–if you're planning on reviewing Tomb Raider Underworld at less than an 8.0, we need you to hold your review till Monday.", but sites are only starting to catch onto the news story today.
A representative for Barrington Harvey, the Eidos PR company said "That's right. We're trying to manage the review scores at the request of Eidos. ... Just that we're trying to get the Metacritic rating to be high, and the brand manager in the US that's handling all of Tomb Raider has asked that we just manage the scores before the game is out, really, just to ensure that we don't put people off buying the game, basically."
Come on Eidos, you must have seen this one coming. Does Kane & Lynch ring any bells?

- How about making the game good enough to earn 80%+ reviews rather than prevent bad reviews from putting people off buying it. Despite their efforts, the Metacritic rating is already below 80% Reading the GiantBomb link - reviewers agreed not to post reviews before Nov 19th (2 days before UK release) - so basically almost so late that people don't have a chance to read them before the game comes out. Then we find the PR rep trying to block any sub 8/10 scores until next week. I'll bet Jeff loved writing that article given his history with Eidos ;)

We can't blame the devs for this sort of thing.

- More Gamespot/Eidos related controversy. I just hope this one doesn't lead to the sacking of Guy, like the previous one lead to the sacking of Jeff. And with Guy being across the pond he won't be able to join Giant Bomb like a load of the other former GS people have done. Either way, Cocker-gate sounds so much better than Gerstmann-gate.

- This is annoying.. it seems to be retracting from the fact its an amazing Tomb Raider game!

- The best bit is the part where Eidos say they think there game deserves an about an 8/10. Does anyone else think thats just rediculous, they know the game could be better, but they are just gonna release it as is. This industry just gets stupider by the year, there are far too many trends that i just plain dissagree with atm

Seriously i hope Eidos learn't from this time last year on how to moderate and prepare their forums for floods of angry users....aswell as vile pictures o.o

- I think Eidos needs to learn that you can't review your own games :P.

They're doing it again?! And at almost precisely the same time of year. Why can't Eidos learn, wasn't Kane and Lynch enough of a message? I really cannot believe the nerve of that company. Why not focus on making the actual games better, rather than sweet-talking the media into giving favourable reviews when it might not even deserve it?
Still, at least it looks like our very own Guy Cocker didn't bow to pressure... Hats off to him! :D

How ironic these PR firms keep generating PR cluterf***s from thin air.
Making requests like this show how out of touch, seeming professionals are with how the industry works. I know journalism is all about gie and take, and I'm sure many editors would happily obide by such a request, but it's such a risky way to operate PR an any media.
I feel for the guys at Crystal Dynamics, who have done a great job in fixing the TR franchise, as they have nothing to do with how Eidos carry their marketing.
Guy gave it a 7.0 review yesterday, which lets be honest, isn't a bad score for a Tomb Raider game in 2008.

Guy is kind of semi-featured, seeing as he's the person on the other end of the phone. He will not bow to the pressure of Eidos and their PR machine. :P
