My Friends

17Oct 06
I was lucky enough to be invited to spend an afternoon playing Wii games this afternoon. It was just me, a room with four consoles, and a Nintendo representative watching to make sure I didn't break anything.

While no photography of the machines was allowed, the helpful PR took some shots of me playing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. This was the first time I got to play the game, hence the level of concentration on my face, but it was every bit as good as I hoped it would be. Slightly exhausting, but that has more to do with my physical fitness than the control system.

I made the most of my time and also got hands-on playtime with Wii Sports, Wii Play, Excite Truck, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Wing Island and Elebits. I'm in the process of doing some hands-on previews, so keep an eye out on the site.

The another big event of the day has been the arrival of Pro Evolution Soccer 6, which landed on my desk this morning. Unfortunately, this is the same day that Xbox Live is down for maintenance, so there's no way of testing my skills against fellow journalists online. I need to get some practise in for the Media Cup that Konami is holding on Thursday, where the great and good from the world of gaming will compete to become champion of champions. Expect high emotions, as well as some photos from the event, later in the week.

Very cool, Guy. I can't wait to play the Wii. Wait. I need to finish my project first. What the heck am I doing here? Work, Eduardo, work!

2 hours of Wii? You are lucky. As for Xbox Live - I see its down since everybody's Gamercards on GameSpot display the error message.

Those cards are always down. At least for me it's been a LONG time I've seen any of them.

Yeah, all these demo rooms have a certain white look about them.

I'm quite envious Guy - not because I still haven't played a Wii, but because you get to play the new Pro Evo and compete in Konami's Media Cup. That's usually a great night.

Yeah, I guess football (or soccer) isn't as big a deal in the US? Do you guys have similar events for American Football or baseball games?

As an aside, I'm finding the new Pro Evo really difficult to get into. I kept getting beaten on it today at work, and as I'm normally the best player in the office (as Russ and Phil will surely attest) I can't figure out what's going on. ;-)

I sure hope Pro Evo doesn't turn into the next FIFA... churning a new one every year, with nothing new. Are there are new teams, Guy? Are the Netherlands with their official player names? Say yes.

If Wii Zelda is going to be somewhat of a strenuous experience, then I'll probably just get it for the GameCube. Nothing like some Zelda and a nice, peaceful sit. I'd prefer exertion to be required on more sports and non-adventure types of games.

The event is being held on thursday huh? Maybe Gamespot UK could create a video clip of how the soccer event goes and if you win/lose while showing off some of the game's gameplay. Then show said clip On The Spot which airs 10 PM Uk time, should be plenty to transfer it to the US team for their show.

    Sound good? Yes/No/Maybe?

I'm already ripping my hair out with anticipation for this console and for Twilight Princess. I can't wait.
