Bandits host expansion Titans on Friday
The Buffalo Bandits will return home on Friday for the first time since falling 16-9 to Colorado in the 2006 Championship Game. After an opening night overtime (11-10) loss to Portland on the road, the Bandits will look to regain the magic that led them to an East Divisional Championship last season, when they host the expansion New York Titans at HSBC Arena on Friday. Game time is 7:30 PM Eastern.
Buffalo will again be without 2006 NLL MVP Steve Dietrich this week, as the veteran goaltender is still recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery.
"He's going to be on the bench but he won't be starting," said Bandits Head Coach Darris Kilgour. "(Backup goaltender Mike) Thompson had a very good game against Portland, so we're confident in him."
Friday's match-up will be the first of a double header weekend for Buffalo, who heads to Colorado on Saturday for a rematch of the Championship Game. Despite the back-to-back, Kilgour plans to use his regular starting lineup both nights.
"We want to go with a set lineup this season," he said. "So we'll go with pretty much the same lineup both nights."
Buffalo was off last weekend after their opening night loss to Portland and Kilgour used the time scout the expansion Titans team.
"We've scouted them and they looked pretty good," said Kilgour. "They have a lot of offensive power and defensively they looked like they communicated very well."
On the other side of the turf, the expansion Titans are looking to rebound from a 15-12 loss last weekend to the Chicago Shamrox, in which New York struggled on special teams.
"It was frustrating for both teams, with so many power plays and man short opportunities," said Head Coach Adam Mueller. "12 of their 15 goals were on the power play or on fast breaks."
"We saw a lot of great things from a lot of people though," Mueller continued. "I thought we played well in parts of the game but we just didn't finish it off."

Roughnecks open against Steal on Friday
The waiting is over for the Calgary Roughnecks as they begin their season on Friday against the San Jose Stealth at Pengrowth Saddledome. Calgary hosts San Jose at 9:30 PM Eastern/ 7:30 PM Mountain, as the Roughnecks kick off their sixth NLL season. San Jose heads north to Calgary after falling 14-11 to Rochester last weekend.
When Calgary opens on Friday, fans will see many new faces wearing Roughnecks uniforms, but will take comfort in seeing Tracey Kelusky, Kaleb Toth, Lewis Ratcliff and Taylor Wray back in the mix.
"The four core guys are still there, which is good for us," said Roughnecks Head Coach Chris Hall. "The core guys that we've retained are very talented and very good, and that sort of stretches through our entire offense and defense."
Amongst some notable acquisitions, Calgary has added Jeff Shattler, Shawn Cable, Jamie Rooney, Scott Ranger, Nolan Heavenor, Kerry Susheski and Scott Anderson.
"We've changed a little bit on offense," said Hall. "In the middle of the floor we've gotten quicker and our size and strength on defense is still there. We're going to take some time to gel, but hopefully not too long. You have to find chemistry quickly in this league."
The most notable change for Calgary will come at the goaltender position as former Championship Game MVP Curtis Palidwor was lost in the off-season and back-up Andrew Leyshon becomes the starter.
"It's Andrew's time to shine," said Hall. "He's played some key roles with us the past couple seasons and he's ready for the limelight. We also obtained Ryan Avery last year (who will fill in behind Leyshon). He has good size, good intelligence and a great work ethic."
Calgary then heads to Edmonton on Saturday to cap off a double header weekend at 9:00 PM Eastern, 7:00 PM Mountain.
Colin Doyle and the San Jose Stealth head off to Calgary looking to rebound from a 14-11 loss to Rochester last weekend. After Doyle's four point (1g, 3a) debut with the Stealth, Head Coach Walt Christensen expects more out of the veteran this week.
"Colin's a great professional. He was under a lot of pressure in that game and he played well under circumstances," said Christensen. "I expect a much better effort from our entire team this weekend. We have to make some adjustments offensively and try and get Colin the ball. He is one of the better players in the world right now."
Much like Calgary, the Stealth are wielding a line up with numerous new faces this season. After finishing 5-11 last year, the Stealth felt it necessary to shake things up.
"We have about 14 new players this year," said Christensen. "We have a much different look. We added Doyle and some young and athletic players that we expect to contribute right away."
Calgary holds the advantage in the all-time series with the Stealth 5-4, including a 2-2 split at the Saddledome. The last time the two teams met, Calgary defeated San Jose 12-10 on April 1st last season.
"They have a very big aggressive defense, a very talented offense and they play very well at home," said Christensen. "We'll have to be ready for them."
