Sly Cooper
Sly is a raccoon who is descended from a long line of Master Thieves. He was born in 1979 to Conner Cooper and an unknown mother. As an eight-year-old child, his parents were killed by a ruthless gang called the Fiendish Five, who stole the Thievius Raccoonus, a book containing the Cooper family's thieving techniques and moves.
Sly was sent to an orphanage, where he met Bentley, a genius turtle, and Murray, a comically self-confident and muscular hippopotamus. Bentley was the plan maker, Sly was the stealthy "field agent", and Murray was the muscle. Sly's quest to recover his family's book forms the basis for the first game. ly in the Thievius RaccoonusSly and his friends make their base of operations in Paris, France but their nationality is never explicitly described in the games. However, it is strongly hinted that they originally hail from America, as Sly states that "...it had been a long time since I had been back in the U.S.." when visiting Mesa City, Utah in the first game (Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus), Mesa City was also given several passing mentions in Sly 3. The main characters all have American accents as well. The world in which Sly Cooper and his friends live appears to be inhabited only by anthropomorphic animals.
Sly's arch enemy is Clockwerk, a mysterious robotic owl. Clockwerk is revealed to have been hunting Sly's family line for thousands of years. In the pages of the Thievius Raccoonus, Sly noticed that in each picture, there was a shadowy outline of a large owl. This hunt provoked his decision to replace his body with machinery. It is also revealed that Clockwerk spared Sly's life in the attack on his family to prove that the Cooper Clan would be unable to be great thieves without the Thievius Raccoonus. In the first game of the series, Clockwerk serves as the final boss, as well as the one "pulling the strings" in the end. The manical owl meets his end, and is left in pieces at the top of an active volcano in Russia.
Bentley
Bentley met both Sly and Murray the hippo when the three were in the same orphanage as children. Bentley has no knowledge of his family, having been delivered anonymously to the orphanage while still an egg. Bentley would often hide under his bed from bullies and study technology and read lots of books, eventually meeting Sly and Murray. Finding he and his intellect and knowledge fit in perfectly with Sly's cunning and adventurous flair, and Murray's strength and enthusiasm, he formed a bond that would become lifelong. In the scenes in each game where Sly explains how he met Bentley and Murray, it also show the three of them growing up at a faster rate. While both Sly and Murray's physical traits change, Bentley simply grows larger (and even then, he is still smaller than Sly and Murray).
Murray
Murray is a strong, muscular but slightly round hippopotamus who serves as the getaway driver and later team tough guy and fighter for the game's title character. He met both Sly and Bentley when the three of them were growing up in the the Happy Camper Orphanage. Murray's driving skill came from his job as a pizza delivery boy, during which he hotwired cars and was eventually fired for dropping too many pizzas.
Murray is quite large and has an enormous appetite. He is depicted as a weakling in the first game, and unbelievably strong in the second game. Murray is by far the strongest of the Cooper trio, and arguably is also the most battle ready of the three. Murray is also known for saying some of the series' most hilarious lines (i.e. "I shall bend that gate like the truth!") and having a peculiarly strong love of his van the team's getaway vehicle, having worked on it, throughout his life. Murray throughout the games wears a blue t-shirt that looks a bit too small for him, and a light blue scarf to go with his driver motif. In the second game and on Murray dons a rouge colored mask over his head and red fighting gloves over his hands when donning his "The Murray" persona in battle. Murray also appears to wear thick rim glasses...although they could also be goggles or perhaps a strange hybrid of the two. Goggles would certainly go with his driver motif and he shows in Sly 3 that he doesn't really need glasses like Bentley does.
Murray seemed more chubby and laid back in Sly 1 and although still rotund by the second game and on, looked considerably tougher and a bit more muscular. Murray is officially listed as being 18 years old during the first game, and since the second takes place two years after Murray would be 20 by the time of Sly 2 and possibly 21 by the time of the third game.
Although he is generally a very nice guy, Murray has shown that he has quite a bit of repressed anger. Whether this is due to his experiences in the orphanage or something else is never explored in any of the games. This is highlighted during Episode 4 of Sly 2, where the Contessa points this out. This is also evident by his violent outbursts when any of his friends are harmed, and could also be a reason for his decision to leave the team due to feeling responsible for Bentley's injury at the end of Sly 2. Although this is quelled seemingly by Sly 3 due to his time with the aboriginal Guru, Murray still seems quite comfortable with his hot-blooded inner rage when he needs it.
Carmelita Fox
Her outlook on crime is very black and white and she believes that any law breaker must be brought to justice, regardless of how minor or major the infraction may be. Pursuing this vision with her shock pistol, Carmelita is rigid in this view and pursues all criminals with equal determination, from murderers to jaywalkers to thieves like Sly and company. She acts justly to her captives however, at one point making sure Sly's captured teammate Murray is doing alright in his makeshift cell and even providing a bag of jelly beans for the hungry hippo. Carmelita is devoted to her job, but she is also a very emotional woman who must work constantly to keep her temper in check. It is never thoroughly explained what influenced her in law enforcement, though it is hinted that she witnessed a crime. She and Sly have feelings for each other, but their relationship is portrayed rather ambiguously throughout the series.
Though great at catching crooks, she has never been able to capture Sly, apart from the end of Sly 2: Band of Thieves, where Sly turned himself in in exchange for letting his friends, Bentley the turtle and Murray the Hippopotamus|hippo, free. Of course, Sly escapes and Inspector Fox is back to chasing him. Carmelita is nearly obsessed over Sly and catching him, which explains her anger and stress. She has a tendency to harm criminals in the process of capturing them, a way of venting her aggression. In the first game her captures of criminals are shown by paper headlines, which humorously state her attractivness. They also inform the player/viewer that she is Latin-American|Latin.

Just one year after the mission on Sauria (aka Dinosaur Planet), Fox and the rest of the team are being called back to duty. This time, though, they'll be saving the entire Lylat System from an entirely new enemy, the Aparoids. But you knew all that, right?
OK. Well, just like the rest of the folks in the game (save General Pepper), Fox is sporting a new flight suit. The green pants theme is carried over from Adventures, and the travel vest is now replaced with a silver flight vest. At this point, it's also safe to say that Fox's headset is not going to be coming back, so you guys upset with Fox's "mohawk" fur are outta luck. In other news, Fox's backpack seems to be there to give the impression that ammo is stored in it. It doesn't lend much else to the game.
Oh, and you'll be able to control Fox on foot and in vehicles. But again, you probably already knew that.

For some reason not really explained fully in the 2002 Adventures manga, Falco decided to sit the last mission out. After spending a few years in the wilderness living off bugs and rainwater, he returns to the team endowed with awesome powers. Just kidding. He is strong enough to hold that massive rocket launcher, though.
Falco is known as being the hot head of the group, but in this game, he's also credited as being the team's ace pilot. When it comes to flying an arwing, Falco's as good as they come. His health is pretty poor in multiplayer, however.
In terms of voices, Falco's been given a bit of an American-Italian accent, along the lines of something from New York. He's still the same Falco, though, and you can count on him to make a few wisecracks throughout the game.

After landing her ship on the Great Fox (and not causing any suspicion from any security systems), Krystal used her feminine charm to get a seat inside one of the Star Fox team's arwings. With Peppy now on the sidelines, she takes over as fourth pilot and offers a few slightly telepathic remarks. This part of her personality is largely forgotten, however, and mainly all Krystal will be doing is thanking you for saving her hide over and over (and over) again. At least she's sweet about it.
Krystal does go on foot with Fox for one mission on Sauria. She doesn't do much to actually help you, as the AI has set her to just run around killing on her own terms. Either way, at least she's shows some efforts.
The game also features a bit of forward momentum for the Fox-Krystal pairing. It's pretty much destined to happen, but you'll be seeing some affection between the two here and there. Oh, and she's still British.

Personally, I found Slippy to be the most tolerable in this game, compared to any of the other SF titles. He has a few cheesy lines, granted, but his voice is not high pitched nor is some weird garbled British like it was in Adventures (Watch out for mines, anyone?). His yellow spacesuit is rather obnoxious, but it's certainly tolerable as you hardly ever see him wearing since most conversations are done duing the mission.
Slippy once again acts as the team mechanic, and he still provides information on Boss health, as well as some items if you manage to kill the enemies on his tail.

The poor bunny just can't help getting older. While he is deprived of the physical and mental fitness required to pilot an arwing (he's developed an obsession for Memory Cores), Peppy has the same roll he did in Adventures. Throughout Assault, he will provide the team with helpful information, send you Landmaster tanks, and ask you to perform strange acrobatic manuveurs. No, the "Barrel roll" line does not make a triumphant return, but I'm sure we'll find plenty of other Peppy quote to lampoon into infinity.
Another side note: Rabbits can grow mustaches, and they enjoy wearing shiny belt buckles!

I really can't think of anything to say about ROB that hasn't already been said before. He continues to pilot the Great Fox, has very few lines of dialogue, and his model is pretty much a copy of the Adventures design. Honestly, there's not much else to say about the machine.

General Pepper has become far more elderly during the year between SFA and Assault, moreso than Peppy even. It must have something to do with the similarity of the names. Anyways, the General is now leading an assault against Oikonny's force, which used to be Andross's forces, but ends up having Star Fox go after the nefarious Aparoid creatures, who have begun to terrorize and assimilate the Lylat System. The General will contact you before quite a few of the missions breifings, and during one stage you'll have an interesting encounter with the old man (can't spoil that for you, sorry).
And no, I don't think his name has anything to do with the Beatles, or the soft drink for that matter.

Beltino is a character that was only alluded to in the Star Fox 64 player's guide, and the collecter's cards. Credited for the designing of the Blue Marine, and now the Orbital Gate, Beltino is very much like Slippy in that they both know their engineering. While he acts a minor character, and the Blue Marine is MIA, Beltino still plays a rather important role in the game, even though you never really see him do anything. Actions may speak louder than words, but for a frog that talks this much, they make an exception.
