- The Bottom Line:
- "Rent it first"
I just got this months issue of gameinformer and read of "People Can Fly" and thought Painkiller wasn't that good was it?
Reading all these old reviews made me want to get my hands on PK. So I did. Played it for about 5 hours and I am pretty much unamused and had enough.
I'll admit I am enjoying my brain going numb like when I play bejeweled; its a hack game. But I am sorry I finding it a little boring and am amazed its score is relatively good when compared to quake.
The weapon I have used most thus far is the grapple shot. It kills in one hit and everything is a cake walk (even on nighmare). No I won't make a complete playthrough on nightmare to be challenged by the unlockable difficulty.
The lacklustre level design pales in comparison to the original quake but the mechanics of the boss fights are good fun. Even so it seems a chore to get to the bosses.
I suppose I need to be there back in the day of 2004 to really appreciate this "gem". Maybe multiplay was what really pulled it through.

Painkiller is straightforward and repetitive, but it is still real fun even though it lacks what today's shooters have.

Painkiller is a plain and simple masterpiece, and the last of a seemingly dying breed of just plain fun FPS.

a mostly successful throwback to the glorious nostalgia of id-popularized shooters and their myriad imitators.
