Crytek abandons PC exclusivity

Director of the German studio blames piracy for the change of heart, but confirms that Crysis will never come to consoles.

Crysis, developed by German studio Crytek and released in late 2007, was one of the most highly praised PC-exclusive games last year. It won GameSpot's Best of 2007 Editors' Choice award for Best PC Game and a host of other gongs.

However, it seems that all is not rosy at Crytek HQ in Germany. The studio's director and founder, Cevat Yerli, recently spoke out about the problems currently besetting his firm, PC gaming in general, and how Crytek plans to address the issues it faces.

In an interview with Croatian magazine PC Play, Yerli said, "We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis. We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin... PC gamers that pirate games, inherently destroy the platform.

"Similar games on consoles sell factors of 4-5 more. It was a big lesson for us, and I believe we won't have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in future. We are going to support PC, but not exclusive anymore."

When asked if this meant that the rumours of Crysis coming to consoles were correct, Yerli simply stated that the port would be "impossible," saying that the game would have to be "largely changed to bring it to Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3," and that Crytek's "internal focus is not linked to bring Crysis to consoles."

bennae66 - If you spent over £1000 on your PC only to use it on a 17" screen then you're a cretin.

o.O if crysis does come to ps3 with 50% extra content that would be cool but modders on pc have made tons of single player maps that add many many hours of gameplay to the awesome game that is crysis.

Crytek, It's all about value. Have EA lower the prices of your games and focus on creating content that keeps people interested. Although I love Crysis and bought both games at full price, I will admit that I actually regret doing so. I guess what I love about the games is the innovative play engine. But aside from that, I really lost interest when I got to the point in the game where you have to fight aliens that don’t die. In both titles I stopped playing when I got to this point and never finished them. The thrill is gone and now and both games just sit on my shelf in my office. I can honestly say that I'll probably never pick them up again. Now that EA is allowing de-activation of games I’m seriously considering doing so and selling them on Ebay which means that your title will sell without you taking a cut. I typically download bootlegs to check games out and make sure I like them before I buy to avoid situations like this. If I had downloaded and played the bootleg copies of these games, I most likely wouldn't have bought them. I don’t know about everyone else but I don’t consider 50 bucks to be chump change these days. I really need to see value for the money I’m spending. The bottom line here is if you’re not making money developing these games than maybe you’re doing something wrong. Maybe you’re paying your developers too much money? The fact that developing today’s games costs as much or more than it does to film a movie in Hollywood should be a prime indicator of this. Pay your developers less and focus on creating timeless games that run on machines with minimal requirements and major replay ability. Blizzard has done this with Diablo, StarCraft and Warcraft titles and to this day charge 39.99 for any of these games 10 years later. They didn’t cut corners. They didn’t compromise game quality and they made the game so it would run on just about any computer at the time. It seems to me that your problems lie within your ability to properly manage your projects and release games with word value tied to them. Provide value and watch your titles succeed. Take the arrogant Microsoft approach and have everyone upgrade their hardware to play your games and you’ll continue to suffer. I guarantee that the 500,000 people that downloaded a bootleg of your game aren’t playing it today. So don’t act like piracy is the cause of all your problems. Remember the word value. Can you say value? Think about value for 15 minutes before you go to bed at night. Value. I must give our fans value…

I have never pirated a PC game ever I payed for all my software including Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit because I got more RAM and Windows XP media centre 32-Bit. Not one thing is pirated I own all my games. People who pirate for the PC are stupid it is easily the most powerfull out of all to play games just look at the games for one far more complex. Halo Wars shows how stupid gaming is on a console that game could not be anymore boring or less demanding on the user. And too the person saying he is going to play wipeout in 1080p at 60FPS I am off to play Burnout at 2560x1900at 60fps on my nice 32" monitor with full 7.1 surround sound. While I am doing that I can also have MSN, Windows media player and so on, on a smaller 19" lcd sat at the side. Too bad huh. Another thing A keyboard and mouse's NOT MICE are great for FPS and TPS games everything else you get a control for like driving you get a steering wheel since you don't have to buy an official $$$ one you can get a cheap one with USB and your off. PC games have short loading times, cheaper in the long run, better warranty than any console (Liftime on all my parts), better controls, nicer looking games free online and hude library of games this includes PS2 PSX NES SNES Dreamcast Xbox1 some point (few games work already) etcc.... endless can't do that on a console Rant over

pc's arent gaming platforms. keyboards are for typing. mice are for scrolling and clicking. it costs rediculous amounts of money to turn a pc into a gaming unit. my god, you cant afford games after the machine is paid for.

im happy to pay for games on consoles. i must admit; im more inclined to use a copied version of say; total war, which i would never pay money for but play it for free on my puter. but silent hill homecoming on 360, or wipeout on ps3 i have no qualms about shelling out for the real deal. i wonder if this makes me a bad person? for me it biols down to a couple of key issues: a console is bought, paid for, it works. you buy a top end pc to max out crysis. costs you as much as a 50" hd plasma. then next year crysis 2 comes out. your specs arent adequate anymore to use the 'highest' settings for textures, sound, draw distance. then its new graphics cards. on top of this im still playing crysis at my table, looking at a 17" screen. then i turn off the pc, go into the loungeroom and i recline on a couch, pick up a wireless controller, and play 60fps 1080p wipeout hd on a 52" lcd. and people wonder why the pc is less and less relevant for todays gaming needs. now im off to soak up some media: off the pc for gamespot forums, and onto the couch to play some real games and let experiences, sights and sounds to wash over me.

I respectfully disagree with you Gwarpup. People are far less likely to pirate console games because that requires a modchip and not only voids your warranty and is daunting to noobs but will also earn you a lifetime ban from Xbox Live. The principles of your theory are sound but just because it is easier for someone to crack a game on the Xbox doesn't mean FAR more people arent way more comfortable using pirated software on PC only.

If they lowered the prices pirating will decrease no one will have to download gigs from internet as long as he can afford it with cheap price

This story is getting old. Its so much easier to pirate on XBOX than on PC. On PC a cracking group has to crack a game before they can put it online. But XBOX has no copy protection. Anyone with a Modchip, which is SOOOoo easy to get, can immediatly on release day find it online and download it. PC gamers need to wait a week or two for the game to be cracked. Searh online and you'll always see the XBOX version appear before PC. If this was their logic, theyd only be making PS3 versions which hasnt been cracked yet. XBOX is the most pirated system around, but because it has such a huge playerbase, the percentage of pirates isnt as noticeable. Oh PC pirated games cant play multiplayer online games, they cant login to the servers. But guess what? XBOX pirated games dont have that problem, because again.. there is NO copy protection. Any games that emphasize online play dont get pirated on PC, other than maybe to test them out. Anyone addicted will want to buy it and go online. Now kill the piracy BS!
The main problem is just that their are so many more console gamers now than PC gamers. Thus any Developer is nuts to not port their games over to the consoles. Crysis would have been heavily pirated on XBOX too but theyd have made so much money they wouldnt have cared.

keep the prices down and you might actually sell some.
most of piracy happens due to inside jobs.

i agree with jackwillkillu. If they did that i would definetely buy heaps of PC games but they just cost too much right now down here in Australia. What happened to PC Games being cheaper? EA has done a pretty sh*tty attempt at this. "Listen kids! Register your game here now and we'll give you a free cheat code!!! how awesome is that?" Thanks alot EA, its not like i could find them on any gaming site in the world.
