Hmph, the graphics look nice, but not the best.
Great, my computer might be able to run it >_>

Oh, and while I'm sure Half-life 1 was incredibly ground-breaking in 1998, calling it a better game than HL2 just doesn't fly. For example, every single character you meet in HL1 is a static, no-name generic -- the enemies, the friendlies ... everyone! You never get to know a single character. In HL2 + eps, there are actual characters to get attached to (yes, fine, I have a crush on Alyx, happy now? =p And Wallace Breen was fantastic as an enemy). I won't even go into the graphics, physics, music, or intense vehicle sequences of HL2, since that would just be overkill. And while HL1 did offer a large variety of unusual alien weapons, none of them were as useful as the Overwatch rifle, or as versatile as the gravity gun.

9.2? 9.2?!! Both the user consensus AND the critics' consensus is much, much higher than that. I feel betrayed by one of my fav review sites =(. I've played through COD4, COD:WAW, Crysis, Bioshock, etc., etc. all very enjoyable for the most part, but every time I come back to play this game, I'm blown away. And the story is one of the "Bad" things they listed about this game?? LOL. In combination with Episodes 1 and 2 (and 3 whenever the hell it comes out), this is bound to be the most epic gaming saga ever made based purely on its story which is told in a manner so immersive that you don't even realize it's a story (e.g. you're never spoon-fed "story moments" through cinematic cut scenes). Granted, the reviewers here didn't have eps 1 and 2 when this review was made, so the story would have seemed incomplete back then (er, not that it's finished now either, haha). Throw in the mind-blowing physics engine (gravity gun FTW!!), the constantly changing action sequences (unless you have severe ADHD, you never feel like you're doing the same thing twice), and a crowbar, and this is one for the ages. Yeah, 9.2 my #$%.

@meisorme There are some parts in this game this could actually be extremely terrifying if you don't like scary games such as the level you visit an abandoned town called Ravenholm. It could remind other games such as Bioshock

the guns aren't too special, the graphics, although outdated are still workable, yet despite these this is the most beautifully crafted game ever. PERIOD. Every moment was thought out, and hand-stitched to provide a cinematic and immersive first-experience. PERFECTION

this game has a great score but sure it deserves more, yea IA is not so smart and this is the midle of the story (some kind of fuel to the episodes), anyway half life 2 as a fantastic level disaen, its never gets boring, fierce and varieted batles and the story... lets just say that is the most impresive saga of all time (at least for me and a lot of more people), this game deserves AT LEAST 9.4.

The Combine is a alien race, Marius. It invades other planets and abducts its inhabitans. The City 17 Civil Protection are humans indeed. But the Combine soldiers and Elite have been modified: their brain has been washed and they have Combine mechanical parts in them. Just like the Striders, Hunters, Gunships or Dropships, which are not robots as many think. They are most likely aliens, that have also been transformed by the Combine. Remember when Dog kills that Strider in Episode Two: blood comes out. Hope this was useful.

the soldiers are the combine and they're HUMAN.

In the written review, the reviewer clearly stated that Half-life 2 has 'Somewhat Lackluster AI'. While some people may disagree, because in combat the AI looks pretty nice and the combine offer some great fights, it is the realism that AI lacks. As you can see, you have a bit too much freedom in Half-life 2 for the AI to be considered as 'Really Good.' In some places of the game - you can block the choke-point with some kind of object and the incoming combine will just stop in front of the object, unable to get through. It is not very realistic because in Real Life someone would just push away the object, while the combine will just act silly, not even realizing the object is here. I personally love Half-life, I am just making some facts clear which the reviewers may not have explained properly(or maybe didn't even mean it)... so, you can consider it as an opinion of mine. Gravity Gun gives you a bit too much freedom over the enemies' limited AI.

if this isnt`t the gratest game ever i don`t no what game it is.when i played this game first i said "wow this is almost fotorealistic and very very imersive with gratest phisics and graphics ever forever"
crysis impressed me but not like Half Life 2 first time when i saw and play it.it runs on low end configs and had the best graphics at least 3 years after release and facial expresions are still the best. this is defenetly my favorite game and nothing can change that period

I agree with Sardinar. This game needs to be 9.6. I mean, the game is not to hard. At times when you play on hard, it gets hard! Even if the story does not answer questions automatically. I think the story is really good. I mean, the gameplay and the story balance this game. Also, this game has great textures! All I have to say, is to play the Half-life 2 trilogy, it is worth it.

Another thought: Over the past four years I've played a lot of games including great shooters. Half life 2 is the one game that is essentially one long sequence, but I have fun just going back to again and again and again to save games in the game. That's because it's more immersive imo than any other game I've experienced. You can just screw around next to the ocean next to a run down house and have sort of zen experiences. There is no way in my opinion--- and I think a lot of people would agree-- that this game should have recieved a 9.2. I think this game should have received at least a 9.5/9.6.

  • Boochie

    Posted Feb 8, 2009 1:09 pm GMT

Yeah, yeah.... HL1 is a seminal game and all that jazz-- I know I've played it at least 2-3 times-- but in my opinion HL2 is a better game. It just is: It adds every element that made HL1 awesome and improves on the formula with better graphics, better character development/personality, and better world immersion. Maybe the soldier a.i. tactics aren't quite as good, but comon... you're Gordon Freeman with a bajillion weapons and a fuc**ng gravity gun at your disposal... what do you expect??? LOL

People are pissed of 9.2 score because the score should be like 9.6 or something. And why Jason complaints of the game being too easy when I can see that he is playing on Easy difficulty? On Hard, I found the game pretty challenging, and making it too hard would have messed everything up. That strider in 1:36 would have owned him in 3 seconds if Jason was playing on hard.

Some of the questions are mainly answered in Half-life's sequels like Opposing Force and Blue Shift.

Half-Life 2 is still such an impressive game. Considering it was brought out almost five years ago now, that is most certainly saying something.

Who gives a crap about "revolutionizing" the industry? I swear, these guys sound like Che friggin' Guevera with all their talk of "revolution". This was an outstanding game and the biggest draw here is the *story*. That's always tacked on with these reviews: "Oh yeah, and the story's pretty good, too". Guys: get your dicks off of your graphics cards and take a good look at the story that's being told. That's why this game is so awesome: because you actually start to *care* about what's happening.
