How do you get the shiny graphics?

Every time I see a video about Portal gameplay on the PC, I notice that the portal gun, the cubes, the androids and other objects look as if they have a reflective finish on them. I configured the graphics in the options, but only the water seems to show some form of reflection.
If you need a certain graphics card, what kind is it and how do you know which kind of graphics card you currently have?

well maybe youve seen the teaser trailer... cuz you cant get THOSE graphics... if not then i can help you sorry :(
