Shadowrun Exclusive Hands-On

We get an updated look at this upcoming multiplayer action game that combines magic with technology to wild effect.

Developer Interview

Lead designer John Howard tells us all about Shadowrun.

Shadowrun was originally a pen-and-paper role-playing game from the '80s and '90s, which might lead you to believe that the upcoming game of the same name from Microsoft and its internal FASA studio is going to be a role-playing game for the Xbox 360 and the PC. However, this new Shadowrun has much more in common with Counter-Strike than it does with role-playing. And while role-playing fans may be a bit annoyed by this, action fans shouldn't. That's because Shadowrun promises wild multiplayer gameplay and impressive depth. We got our first good look at Shadowrun's intriguing mix of magic and technology last September, and we had a chance to get our hands on a more complete version recently.

In most shooters, you just run around and blast the enemy with a bunch of weapons. That's what you'll also do in Shadowrun, as you'll be armed with assault rifles, shotguns, grenades, pistols, and more, but you'll also use an impressive array of magical powers and technological items to do things that would be considered cheating in other games. Ironically, many of these powers were inspired by such cheats. For example, the "no clip" cheat in most games is used to let you move through solid objects, and the equivalent power in Shadowrun is teleport. Or wall hacks that let you see through walls in some shooters becomes enhanced vision in Shadowrun. And it's when you start to piece these abilities together in different ways that you create all sorts of wild moments. For instance, enhanced vision lets you see through solid objects, so you can detect where enemies are. Once you have their location, you can use teleport to jump in behind them and cut them down with a machine gun or a katana sword, then teleport away in an instant. You can summon magical brambles to choke off choke points, use gliders to hang over the battlefield, throw down an antimagic generator to disable magic, and more.

Shadowrun is about a world where magic has returned after being dormant for thousands of years. Two factions battle for control of a key South American city. On one side is the RNA Corporation and on the other is the Lineage, the guardians of an ancient and powerful temple. In Shadowrun, the return of magic means that regular humans can cast spells and some humans have transformed into different races. These races form the basic classes of the game. There are elves, the most magical race, which are fast and heal automatically. However, the downside is that using technological items hinders their magical ability. Then there are dwarves, who are short and hard to hit. Dwarves also neutralize the magic around them by absorbing it for their own uses, which can give the other races fits. And then there are the huge and powerful trolls, capable of absorbing large amounts of damage. (Fans of Shadowrun know that orcs are a fifth race, and while they won't make an appearance in the game, their existence will be hinted at.)

There won't be a single-player campaign or story in Shadowrun. Instead, the game consists of several different types of multiplayer modes that let up to 16 players battle it out online. The most common multiplayer mode will pit the two factions in battle, and the RNA and Lineage forces are essentially identical to one another, in that they have the same weapons and powers at their disposal. That makes for a perfectly level playing field that lets you pit your reflexes and guile against others players.

In Shadowrun, magic is never a weapon; rather, it's a tool that lets you do all sorts of incredible things. We've already noted the ability to teleport and turn into a puff of smoke, but you can also use magic to throw down a tree of life to heal yourself and allies, resurrect allies, and summon a demon to protect you or go after your enemies. The same goes for the tech in the game, which also has a utilitarian effect. For example, glider wings let you swoop over long distances or hang over the battlefield and snipe, and smartlink increases your accuracy and adds an extra level of zoom on all of your weapons. Smartlink also lets you avoid friendly fire, so you can use it in combination with the chain gun to sweep a room full of enemies and friendlies and avoid friendly causalities.

One tactic is to use the glider to soar over the battlefield and then use enhanced vision to look inside the buildings below. Once you detect an enemy, you can dive toward the building and then teleport through the ceiling and appear next to the enemy and attack, and then disappear. Another fun tactic is to have someone equipped with the smoke spell work in tandem with a teammate equipped with smartlink. The smoke teammate will lure an enemy into chasing them and then run directly toward the smartlink teammate. The smoke player will then turn to smoke and give the smartlink player a clear shot at the unsuspecting enemy.

Many ppl always say PC gamers will own the console gamers, that is pretty much incorrect. The mouse and they key board are both a very well-known weapon of choice for FPS, TPS, RTS etc. But the gamepad also has the power to match that precision and even any console gamer gets an adapter that can be used to plug in a keyboard and mouse he/she says "I am gonna own all those PC gamers" and I say "Just how are you gonna do that?". I mean, c'mon PC gamers play against OTHER PC gamers and they got experience on these kind of ppl playing with their own type of controls. The thing is the gamer's controllers DO NOT matter, the better you are at it the better you have the controls but some who stink blame their controllers. To them I give a zero out of ten. Remember: "A bad craftsman blames his tools". P.S. This game is OUT OF MY MIND AND I AM NOT GONNA BUY THIS *** GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's wrong with no single player? Anyone remember Tribes/2? I've never played the "real" Shadowrun...but this is looking to be a good game no matter what the name is.

No single player mode? Someone should talk to their marketing department because I can't believe they think this is going to be a successful console game without out some PvE (player vs enviroment). PvP is a nice addition (player vs player) but to not have a single player mode will kill the game in the end. If the code is there I'm confused why they wouldn't implement a single player mode. Someone really dropped the ball on this. (oh and I guess I don't get the whole "don't use name because it's a different game" argument.....however I guess if they released a new Metroid game that ended up being a dancing game but just used the name to get someone to buy it....maybe I would be pissed too lol)

I think they really screwed us over with this one. Shadowrun's main theme was being able to hack into computers and upgrading your bionic parts. They should've never took that out of the game... technology WAS the game, basically. And now they're saying that this new addition to the Shadowrun series is mainly a multiplayer game... Someone needs to dust off their SEGA and play the real Shadowrun; Take some lessons from a good source. Reinstate the hackers and then you've got yourself some decent gaming. I'm signing the petition to change the name of the game, for the sake of us veterans.

I've started a petition to change the name of this game. This game breaks cannon on so many levels, it' s not even funny. Microsoft already owns the license to the material, so they aren't risking a lawsuit. Naming this game Shadowrun is deceptive, dirty, and makes a lot of people mad. Nobody would have a problem with this game, if it wasn't called Shadowrun.

    Please go to http://forums.shadowrun.com/forums/32058/ShowThread.aspx#32058
Sign up, and sign the petition.

HEY EVERYBODY, I JUST READ ABOUT A NEW STARWARS FPS!

This game will feature a number of playable races.

First, the humans. Humans are all Jedi knights that possess a number of magical abilities. They can see through walls, like superman. They can fly in the air. They can fling massive fireballs at the cost of much MP (magic points).

Then, there are the Ewoks. Ewoks have a passive MP dampening ability, which depletes the MP of any nearby human. While they can’t cast magic themselves, they more than make up for it with their higher technology. Ewoks are the most technically advanced race in the game, and poses a silence bomb, that dampens the sound in the area. This silence bomb makes it so that the Jedi can’t make any of their incantations, and thus can’t cast their spells.

The last race we have is the Wookie. The Wookie are snow based creatures, giant and furry, one might think of them as an abominable snowman. When shot, the Wookie’s fur turns to ice, thus slowing the Wookie’s movement speed down. They are the race that can take the most damage.
Oh, and while the empire will be mentioned, the empire will not be a playable race.

The game is set 2 years prior to the first movie "A new hope".

The game is currently in beta, and has recieved nothing but positive feedback by the people that have had a chance to play it. It's gameplay definately redefines the FPS.

Shadow run was one of my favorites games of all time. the ability to hack into a computer system. And now its a first person shooter. Man dont take the hacking away from the gameplay. I hope this game has a good storyline and gameplay or im really going to be pissed. I hope this doesnt end up like another starcraft ghost.

Please don't do this, never want to play cross platform, it won't work!!

The mouse control will always win over the controller.

Keep us seperate microsoft! PC gamers bite

PS Shadowrun should have lived and died on the SNES, who are they trying to appeal to by using the name as all snes shadoruns fans are going to hate this

"damn that sucks i use to play that back in the day i was hoping that it would be like a action rpg or something it wont be the same thats
    for sure"

I feel ya man. I actually wouldn't mind playing a FPS that is set in the Shadowrun universe. This, however IS NOT a FPS that is set in the shadowrun universe. Seriously, why even call it Shadowrun? The only thing that this game has in common with Shadowrun, is that there are metahumans, magic, and better tech than we have today..... The details of all three of these are completely different.

Damn... come to think of it... I don't think I know ANYBODY that is going to buy this game.

Yeah if K&M is implemented well by the 3d party developer, then the playing field will be rather confusing. Lots of PC gamers wondering how some guy on a 360 managed to get them through the eyes!

I guess, as someone's already said, the posturing should stop (mine included) and we should wait for the game to come out and find out. If it turns out to be a disaster and one groups beats the other hands down then 360/PC dedicated servers will prevail anyway.

This looks like it's gonna be quite good, but as others have said, maybe the license could have been used better (unless of course something else is in the works!)

To be frank... I can't believe it... Who WOULDN'T think of this? Console players have EZ mode turned on to compensate for the lack of M&K... so who's going to own who? I'll tell you who's gonna own who.

I'll own all of you, on the console, using a M&K adapter. Now I get all the bonuses of playing on the console, you know the ones that are supposed to make up for a lack of having a mouse and keyboard, and I still get to use a mouse and keyboard.

Haha, I win! GG all! I can't believe the stupidity...

A game without any single player campaign sounds like a game that I likely won't get. Having multi-player as the core experience is ok for MMO games, but even those usually have single player missions available, and always have NPCs & "Monsters" that you can interact with or kill. I don't want my game experience to be dependant on finding a good group to team up with, but sticking with a talented team isn't even an option in this game, as it seems like they've even disabled the ability for you to join a buddy's server (they choose your server for you). I was semi-interested in this game when I first heard about it, but the lack of single-player has taken the little interest I had.

How could they do this? Shadowrun has always been a RPG The SNES version was AMAZING!!, Why couldn't they just do a remake or game along these lines but No!! what do they do? Yup, Make another FPS for the PC/XBox, When are they going to stop with the online shooters, I want a STORY mode, I want to enjoy the gaming experience on my own without some stupid teenager talking crap, What are the going to make into a FPS next Wonderboy, New Zealand Story or Flashback ???

This isn't Shadowrun. It's not even about roleplaying; it's like watching your favorite novel getting turned into a horrible movie. Teleporting? That's not even a part of the Shadowrun world. Seeing through walls? Not quite. The only thing this game has in common with Shadowrun is... elves. Aside from that this sounds like Deus Ex 3! How are they going to pull off Wired Reflexes? You can't be a gunner in SR without Wired Reflexes. Someone needs to do a Shadowrun game in the same tradition as Knights of the Old Republic.
