It would be fun better would be give them bigger teams 4-6 pokemon.

All the gyms use 2 types, but the mix of types varies by version. Example: A fire/rock gym with 3 trainers with 2 Pokemon each, and the leader with 4 (10 total). In X version, maybe 4 of those are straight up fire, 4 hybrids, and 2 pure rock. Meanwhile in Y version, you'd have 4 rock types, 4 hybrids and 2 fire types.

No, there are plenty of different themes they could do besides types, that aren't ridiculously played out.

What if...

Each Gym Leader focuses on 2 types, E4 has a member corresponding to each type of weather, and Champion either has mostly Pokemon of the 17th type not used by the GLs, or a mixed team like Cynthia's.
