What does the key do in Indy's office do?

I got the key by putting all the boxes into the positions and then I made a kind of door on the ground. I smashed it and there was a key. I have looked all over but I don't know what it does

Take it to the Artifact Room, grab the blue diamond on the floor and place it in the pedestal to reveal a crank. Put the key in the crank and turn it to open the three holes in the floor to access the bonus levels. You also need to find all the artifact pieces in the story missions before you can enter the bonus levels, so don't be worried if you can't do them right away.
