Sony: Wipeout HD still on track

SCEE claims futuristic racer delayed due to various improvements, rather than health concerns over epilepsy.

Sony Computer Entertainment showcased a range of first-party games at its E3 2008 press conference, including Killzone 2, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and God of War III, but many Sony fans were left wondering why Studio Liverpool's Wipeout HD wasn't on display.

In an interview with Eurogamer, SCE Europe head David Reeves stated a specific technical problem as the reason for the game's delay, but he failed to go into details. A few days later, CVG reported that Sony's upcoming PlayStation Network racer had been delayed due to concerns over the game's risk of inducing epileptic seizures.

The publisher has since offered a different reason for the delay, citing various improvements as the real cause. In a statement issued today to GameSpot UK, a spokesman stated that "the reason for the delay of Wipeout HD on PS3 has been due to the many improvements we have been making and the numerous features we've added to the game. These include: eight reverse tracks, four extra ships, two alternative HUDs, two-player offline split-screen, and XMB [Xross Media Bar] Trophy support. We look forward to sharing Wipeout HD with you very soon."

Although SCEE didn't specifically deny that the first-party game may trigger seizures in those playing it, the spokesperson concluded by saying that "regarding the speculation about health issues, we can assure you that we take consumer safety very seriously and monitor it very carefully."

Wipeout is now expected to be released toward the end of this year.

WipeOut was a very cool game when it first came out back on the original PS1, 'cause then we'd seen nothing like it. Plus, has anyone ever seen Hackers, remember the seen when they're playing that game where Jonny Lee Miller beats Angelina Jolie's score, that was using an original concept video of WipeOut. Sorry for getting off point, anyhow... so I thought WipeOut XL was the best in the series, and it also had the best soundtrack out of all of them. Though, I was hoping WipeOut Fusion would be good and was rather disappointed. The series just needs to be revamped to be better these days. This series definetely needs some change for the better and hopefully WipeOut HD isn't just a remake of the previous WipeOut games in a higher resolution. Anyhow, I'm excited that this is coming out, mainly 'cause we've been lacking a decent hover/combat racer for a while, though, Microsoft's Quantum Redshift on the original Xbox was probably the last best thing to come out, and that was a $5 bargin bin game that despite being under most peoples' radars was actually pretty good.

I want then to take their time and do it right. At least they did the testing and caught the discrepancies.

Sigh. I was really, REALLY hoping to being playing Wipeout HD this summer. Why I appreciate any improvements they may make to the game, I'd much rather be playing it right now, during my holidays!

    Yay! Soon....

The last real Wipeout game for me was Wip3out, I never liked Fusion, and while Pure and Pulse are very very good, they just don't match the coolness of being on a big tv. Whens Wipeout 5 coming out!?

Too bad Wipeout HD wasn't a launch title. I always think of it as an early Killer App for the PSone.

Maybe they've added a new devastating weapon. When triggered, every player's screen flashes colors and lights like mad.

At least Sony tells people exactly why they delay a game.

Nintendo needs to learn how to do that.

And as long as I can get this game by Christmas, I'll be okay.

well this isn't that uncommon of a thing (regarding the seizures and epiliepsy concern)

every video game manual has a warning in it that the game may cause seizures to people sensitive to flashing lights

Seems to me like the delay has good intentions.

I have played all Wipeout games and always end needing more!!

I wish Wipeout HD could include all tracks from other games as downloadable content (of course free add-ons would be better)!!
